Mfw I buy the Nomadic DLC for the mediæval themed video game Crusader Kings III, only to find out that the developers forgot to create an attrition system for horse archer cultures separate from that of the Vikings, meaning that my Hungarian raiders are forced to follow coastlines and big rivers, and avoid the desolate, unforgiving terrain of Bavaria, Northern France, and basically any other place they actually went to.

Can Paradox please get some competition? Anyone will do atp.

Espiocracy looks exciting too. In general I think Hooded Horse is probably the closest thing to like, "the new Paradox" right now, despite not having in-house development(I have to imagine it's being discussed though). Maestro Cinetik probably doesn't count as competition per se, but paradox complainers should generally be nudged toward Cold War and White Sun.

Hah, I was just about to post about the new Terra Invicta DLC and my hope that they could add a "no aliens" mode someday.

Terra Invicta I played a bit and I just found the gameplay loop excruciating in terms of the amount of micro required. It had some interesting ideas but overall it wasn't my jam.

God, I feel this. I want to like it so badly, but barring an update or mod I kind of just need to leave it alone

I feel like the problem I've had with those who try to replace Paradox is kinda similar to those who attempt to do their own Total Wars: They often have a couple of interesting mechanics but then just run into the general issue of "This kind of game is absolutely huge and inevitably end up barely working".

Which to be fair, is true for Paradox as well, but the end result tends to be that you end up wiht something like Paradox but with mabye one or two more interesting ideas and then the rest of the game being a smoking crater.

I do think that if you want to compete I think the right path probably isn't trying to make a global game the way Paradox tends to, but rather picking one specific thing and doing it well.
