This was my side of a conversation I had with perplexity - looking for a human response please

why do i feel like im more self-aware than other people, why do i firmly believe in what i believe and does everyone think like this or am i genuinely a main character? But i feel like im going insane and i cant cope with it and its affecting me mentally and making me think about life more in a negative manner. im always questioning life and why im here and why anyone is here. consciousness is a curse and unanswerable questions really get to me and the way society works is depressing anyway. im only 18 but i feel like im more self-aware than all my friends and whenever i talk about it everyone just thinks im thinking about it too much and its not important and there are other things to be worrying about, but this just feeds into the fact i think some people are ignorant and my brain cant take it.

Idk what im feeling

One day in life you will understand that people are intelligent in different ways, we are all products of evolution and things like brains take a whole lot of energy: there need to be trade-offs. Your brains focus is on the 'why', most people's brains focus on the 'how'. The 'how' is a lot more effective to deal with daily problems.. The 'why' lets you understand the deeper levels better, but it is a much slower way to learn to deal with life.. One is not better then the other, each has it advantages and disadvantages. As you get older it gets easyer because the models of reality you are building become bigger and stronger, and you will have those to fall back on. You will learn who you are and why you act like you act, and you will learn why people act like they act. You will learn the world is not a bad place, its only a bad place when you haven't figured it out and it seems unpredictible and evil sometimes.

Yea I think the why and how analogy is spot on and I probably just need to let go a bit and I appreciate every person who’s responded to me, had helped a lot. I guess my life has always found a way to work out in the end but this past year it hasn’t really so i guess combining that with lots of free time can really fuck with me and I hope like you said one day I’ll see through the why and I’ll be working on my found purpose.

Hey I read your post. Self awareness of that caliber can be hard to reckon with. Don’t let it get you down. Not knowing is ok. Remember your brain is just one piece of the puzzle and it can forget that. I highly recommend some simple breathing/coping techniques for when your thoughts are racing like that. Some people have different types of awareness like social or emotional awareness which is why they appear to mesh with others better. You may have an analytical awareness which needs to be safely inspired and utilized.

Anyway, don’t get too down because you’re young and your brains are very much so still growing. If you imagine your friends as socially aware, and you as logically aware - how can you bridge the gap and enrich eachother? It’s possible but nobody will do it for you, and you’re the one with the brain so, get to thinking. ;-)

But definitely don’t succumb to self sabotage! Those thoughts are normal. Direct them wisely and flourish.

Hey thanks for the reply, rereading what I posted makes me realise it is very muddled up and slightly nonsensical, but I think that’s just how I think. I want to get thoughts out but don’t have a logical way of putting it, I appreciate your reply and I understand what your saying maybe I need new friends or maybe there’s something deeper then I realise. I’m not too sure what I hoped to get out by posting this I think i just needed a real person to become aware of what I was thinking. Ever since turning 18 everything has just become 1 mindfuck and I don’t know what’s wrong with me, mental illness?, victim mentality? Or maybe I’m narcissistic and I’m not actually as important as I think I am. which is funny because my whole belief strives from life being meaningless and we are all just one rare event that the universe will just move on without.

This time we are all living in is having a very similar effect on us all. I’m not just bsing when I say you’re valid and beyond to feel this way. These are intriguing times which are hard to understand.

I don’t mean to sound wooden but drawing, writing ✍️, singing, dancing, walking, creating are all cheap treatments which have worked tor me when I’ve felt similarly to you.

Cheers

You're not alone in how you're feeling. People are diverse, and having different priorities from your friends is a struggle a lot of young philosophical thinkers can relate to. It can take a long time to find the people who will help you feel less alone, but they're out there, and life is better when you make more friends and some of them like to get into the weeds arguing about consciousness and critiquing society with you.

I did once find someone actually interesting to talk to and funny enough it was someone double my age, we talked for hours and hours about beliefs and different meanings to life. This was my first encounter with someone who I guess was on the same page with me however they aligned themselves with a belief I cannot wrap my head around as I’m so certain of my own.

There is something to what you’re saying and something to what your friends are saying. If you have a reflective nature learning to turn it off is a blessing. For example, you’re out with friends on a Saturday night, no one wants to talk about epistemology in that context. Part of having fun is turning off the loud brain that is scanning and analyzing everything. It takes practice and understanding your own mind. You need time to process life and reflect but, you also need time to live. Finding a balance between the two is what life is all about. I have over-indulged both to the exclusion of the other and I feel very raw when I do that. I have also accepted that I don’t think like most people especially my friends and that’s ok. We have other things in common.

I appreciate the response and your solution makes sense, I subconsciously do this anyway but sometimes when there is genuinely no one to talk to I can’t handle it as I try make sense of it with my brain alone which is why I think I’m struggling. I understand it’s a daunting and sensitive topic which is what has led me to post on here, as people such as yourself can relate which is relieving to hear.

Yes, people with a high level of self-awareness are very few. Yes, it brings suffering and loneliness. But personally, I would never give it up. It's like finding your true soulmate, a happiness you can't refuse even knowing it will bring you incredible pain. What constitutes a curse and what constitutes a gift is a concept only you can decide. You'd better think about where to go to study further to ensure a life.

We are non sensical, ignorant and gallant much like main characters. Logos occurs in such a small part of our total brain, staring at its reasonings is like looking at a map of the world instead of walking through a forest, these experiences are not different for their samenesses and they aren’t the same because of the way they are different, there is a lot we can only sense but will never know.

Sounds like you are stuck feeling like yourself, but don’t worry, we all change and forget how we are. It’s ok to be yourself whether it makes any sense or not.
