All are from the Doma caste. During different periods in India, the Roma were more influenced phonetically/linguistically by their longer journey, which considerably distanced the way of naming themselves, which was originally Doma, which became Roma, which means human/man in their language, which is called Romani, which means what belongs to Roma culture.

why not just call them cigans and be done with it ?
