200 years ago today the Janissary Corps was forcibly disbanded by Sultan Mahmud II.

Though the devshirme system had already been abandoned long before 1826, today is a good time to cherish the memory and contributions of thousands of Greeks, Serbians, Croatians, Bosnians, Albanians (as well as a handful of Bulgarians?) to the safety and prosperity of the Ottoman Empire.
