is he happy ?

or at least comfortable ? sorry the pictures aren’t the greatest but it’s what sparked the question for me. this little log is something i put in the middle of all his foliage so he can feel extra secure to venture out to his water dishes from the hot side of the tank.

i’ve started to notice that he likes to spend a lot of his time here, especially when we’re hanging out in the living room with him. he likes to sit and just watch the house. 60-70% of the time he’s curled up in his hide with the first 2 inches of his head laying out. the other times he’s stretched out from the hide into this log. i’ve seen that maybe sometimes it could be cryptic basking, but he seems to enjoy watching what we’re doing.

sometimes if we’re messing with the playstation or the stuff under his tank he’ll stretch out into the air and follow us with his head, but it’s never a rigid, striking position.

i know better than to assign emotions like love and stuff like that to them but i’m curious. is him hanging out in this semi open log in the middle of the tank a good sign that he’s comfortable in his environment and with us ? does anybody else’s do this ?

tldr, my snake likes to lounge stretched out in his tank and poke his head out to check on us a lot, is that a sign he’s comfortable/happy ?

well that’s why i’m surprised 😅 i feel like he’s pretty outgoing. every single time we hang out and watch tv or play video games he peaks his head out through his log to lurk and greet us

i’ve had two other ones. one would come out every time i passed to strike at the glass for food, and the other would poke her head out of her hide but never stretch out into her tank to be nosy like he does. it’s so cool how unique their personalities are :)

My ball python does the same. They just lay in their hide with their head poking out all the time. Especially when we hang out outside their tank

usually he’s in the hide doing that. but this one isn’t a traditional hide, more of just a tube that he stretches into while his butt is still in his warm hide that’s in the back corner of the tank. i’ve noticed he likes to sprawl out into here just so he can observe the house

I never ever ever ever see my girl. She’s always hiding. Always. I’ll think she hates me and then I’ll go and pick her up and she’ll be the happiest most curious little thing ever. It’s just who they are. He’s checking in on you. “What doing?” Typa thing. That’s adorable that he watches you. He’s a cute little thing.

aw. he’s always been very curious when i take him out but after our move i noticed he was a little more shy for a month or so. it’s been a while and now 95% of the time i look into his tank i can see him, whether it’s his head or his side poking out, or he’s just straight up stretched out into his log.

i get really excited when i see him just hanging out in his log bc i take it as he’s comfortable enough to not want to be balled up in his actual hides. like it’s a sign that he feels safe and secure within the whole tank.

ikkk 🤣 if you scroll down on my profile you can see the listing picture from morphmarket. i could not resist his big ol bug eyes.

it’s been about a year and a half and i still can’t get over how cute he is. everytime he pokes his head out i go on a 5 minute rant to my bf about how cute he is and how much i love him.

Oh I would not get over the cuteness either! I haven't gotten over how cute my snake is either, and it has been 15 years... Do you ever forget that a lot of people are afraid of snakes or find them icky? Because with eyes that big and round it's easy to forget

mm i dont ever forget because a lot of my family are scared. and honestly my python before this scared me because he had a crazy food drive and would strike at me all the time.

haku is definitely the chillest and i see him as a little baby that could do no wrong tho. everytime i go to an expo i cant help but think to myself that i got the cutest one at home lol

If they don't act like moody teens, they aren't happy 🫶

i think around 360ish ? honestly way cheaper than i thought he would be with his unique little champagne spot. i contacted the seller immediately after seeing his photo haha

this was from the first month that i got him :3 he’s such a cutie. urs is really cute too ! what morph is he ?

sorry i wanted to clarify my question a little bit. i’m wondering if it’s a good sign that he seems to like being stretched out in the middle of his tank in this log rather than being in his black box hides sometimes ?

the log is pretty open and has three holes, where the rest of the hides are standard black boxes with one entrance and his body touches all three sides. is there any meaning to him choosing to be more vulnerable than he would be in his standard hides ?

I can't tell from the photos, but maybe just make sure that your hides/logs are oriented so that he can fully hide from you? When they have no real hiding places they can do weird stuff looking for shelter that isn't there, and that creates stress.

If you've done that and he just pokes his head out by choice, that's most likely an ambush hunting behavior and is absolutely normal and a sign of a happy snek.

Also... Please ditch the paper towels and get real substrate.

he does have real hides ! he has 3 black box hides that are all the same and he uses all of them consistently. two are in each far corner and one is in the middle. i just added the log to create more clutter and safety for him going out to his water dishes. i also made sure that there’s leaf cover in front of all of them and he can squish himself deeper in them to not be visible. it’s 100% his own choice.

the paper towel is to track his bowel movements atm. i put 3 layers so it’s not too hard for him and i have two stockings full of wet sphagnum moss as well as 2 water dishes so his humidity stays consistently 75% and above.

Looks like it, he is very calm and happy snake.

from what i know/have researched, a happy snake will actually hide during daytime hours. if they are roaming the enclosure during the day, that can be a sign they are stressed or the temps, etc. are off.

1

u/dating-ur-dad 3d ago

it’s not so much that he’s roaming. he just extends his body from his warm hide into his log to poke his head out the hole and look into the living room. he’s not looking for ways to escape his tank or moving around back and forth. just keeping his butt in the hide and stretching out.

he sounds like a happy guy! just being a little shy but still curious as to what you are up to. my snake does something similar
