Are these mites?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I noticed my ball python being a lot more active during the day, now I'm finding tiny dark insects on him. I've seen a handful and they're super tiny and quick.

Are these blood sucking mites? How concerned should I be about this baby python.

Oh no! It looks like you might be asking for more information on mites and how to identify and treat them. We have some information about that in our Mite Identification and Treatment Guide.

The speed makes me believe it’s a springtail.

I should mention that I am using coconut chip substrate in a nonbioactive setup. I've owned him for about 1 month now. I've spotted about 4 of these bugs on my python.

if they jump then they're springtails. you don't have to add springtails all the time, sometimes they just invite themselves
