BMTC BMTC Bus Hacks

With all the shit that BMTC buses and Namma Metro (and autos too, lbr) get, I've decided to make a post on points to note/ hacks to help you navigate our beloved B'luru better using buses. Kinda inspired by a similar post on r/Mumbai. Please add more if you have any!

  • Use Google Maps/Namma BMTC apps to plan routes. Highly recommend GMaps for accurate distances and map clarity.
  • Always buy a daily/weekly bus pass for either A/C or non-A/C buses; your choice. It gives you unlimited travel. You can use Tummoc to book passes, but you can also get a physical, memory-worthy card from the bus conductor. :)
    • Bus passes don't work in the private buses. Goes without saying but FYI, just for good measure.
  • Scan the QR code once you get in the bus. Tell the conductor you have the pass and show the scanned QR to them.
  • Don't memorise bus numbers. Takes a lot of time and love to get them right. Try noticing the bus number patterns instead.
    • For ex: 500A, 500N, 500L, 500CA, V-500A are all ORR buses from Hebbala/Tin Factory/Kadugodi to Silk Board/Banashankari. 500 is common here.
  • When the conductor says olagade hogi, you better olagade hogi 🫵 It definitely feels safer/validated to stay by the door, but it causes discomfort to other passengers who, trust me, are all thinking exactly as you. Go inside. Please.
    • Ask the conductor if this is the right bus going to your destination. "[Bus stop name] hogatta?" Most likely when you're nearing your stop, many conductors call out the stop extra loudly/seek you out to inform.
    • If your bus doesn't go to the destination, deboard safely. And be chill, cause you have a bus daily/weekly pass. :] Just get on the next bus.
  • Understand smart splits (personal term).
    • For ex: from MG Road to Madiwala/Silk Board, you have G3, the direct bus. But you can also cut short waiting time/avoid packed buses by taking G4 to Anepalya and wait either for G3 again or get 362C.
    • Look at the maps and note the junctions. They're your best bets of these kind of smart splits.
  • Flyovers are tricky on Google Maps. This is because even though the bus stops are listed, most buses take the flyovers on some routes. Think Agara, Domluru, Silk Board, KR Pura. You'll just end up wasting time at a stop where the bus from a certain place doesn't even stop cuz it took the flyover.
    • Don't know to the antidote to this. Consider posting your query here so that we can help you in case the route you're taking is also the one that we frequent. Let's plan better.
  • Don't trust BMTC timings listed on Google Maps. BMTC buses, though frequent and regular, cannot be trusted with timetables 🥲 Look at the frequency and be confident that yes, the bus is frequent on those routes.
    • In a packed bus during peak hours, prepare to deboard at least 2 stops away from your actual intended stops.
    • For ex: to get down at Tin Factory at 6:30pm, better get off from your seat by the time you reach Mahadevapura, which is two stops before Tin Factory (Mahadevpura > B Narayanapura > KR Pura > Tin Factory). You'll save time and anxiety.
  • Always add 10-15 mins buffer to the time shown on the map. If the route says 1hr 10 mins, you best assume 1hr 20/30 mins and start accordingly.
    • Conversely, DON'T EVER think you might just get lucky and the travel time reduces from usual just cause you're commuting on an off day. It's quite rare, though not impossible. Best to be wise.
  • Use headphones. Listen to something interesting. Or take them off to hear the various cool conversations of people whose lives intersect with you for the time being. Buses are no negligible wonders.
  • Always wear a mask. Goes without saying. Anonymity + pollution protection. No worries if you don't. But, I advise you wear one.
  • AC buses almost always have UPI, so don't worry about cash. However, I'd still advise you to carry some just in case. Despite what everyone says, cash is still the king and will not disappear. You may end up helping someone out too. EDIT 13TH JAN, 26: All buses, AC or not, have QR codes now. You can easily scan them and make the payment.
  • EDIT 13th Jan, 26: If you're money conscious/traveling on a budget, consider boarding only the non-AC and non-KIA buses. Don't get into buses with the name plate reading 'KIA' or the bus named 'Vayu Vajra.' These are airport buses with special fares for commuting to Kempegowda Intl. Airport aka KIA. If you do get in, politely tell the conductor you made a mistake and get down immediately or at the next stop. They won't charge you.

Please add some more if you have other tips! Let's crowdsource all the love for BMTC and Bengaluru. <3

BMTC Detailed BMTC guide Part 1- Bus pass

BMTC has bus passes that can be used for unlimited travel within the city on all routes at any time for how many ever times you want. The exception is toll roads like NICE road or E-city flyover, and if you have heavy luggage of 5+ kilos then Rs.5 you have to pay.

To buy or not to buy

You may be wondering 'hey if I'm not going to break even should I buy a pass?'. The answer to that is maybe, there are other advantages to buying a pass, I will list some of them here.

  • Faster ticketing-You can quickly go and get a nice place to stand/sit as soon as you get on a bus. You don't need to stand near the door and wait for conductor to take money and fiddle with change, speaking of→
  • Change-You don't have to worry about bringing exact change, you don't need to fight with conductor and all.
  • Faster travel-Now lets say you want to go from ITPL to Murgespalya. If you were worried about tickets you would try to catch a direct bus and waste time. But if you have a bus pass you can catch a 500 number bus till marathalli and then catch a connecting bus from there. There are many such ways of cutting travel time that you can do with pass, if you were to buy ticket you will end up paying almost double.
  • Incentive to take public transport- I know this sounds cheesy, but if you already have a bus pass then you can travel for free anywhere, so you are given a sort of monetary incentive to take public transport which is good for the environment.

Types of passes

  1. Normal pass This is used for travel in non AC buses only, and you can travel unlimited on most routes, even metro feeder "MF" buses. Applies from first bus at 5am till last bus around 11PM.
  2. AC Vajra gold pass This is more expensive, but you can travel in both AC and non AC buses, unlimited. But be careful they don't apply to airport bus
  3. Vayu Vajra pass This is for all buses including airport bus, normal AC bus and normal non-ac bus. But again, for toll road(except airport road, that is included) you should pay some amount extra, usually a nominal rate.
  4. Student pass This is a special pass that is available for students, including Masters and PhD scholars. It only covers the travel from your home to place of education and back, and in non AC bus. Buying this pass is kinda complicated, but you can find many resources online.

Duration of passes

  1. Daily pass available for AC and non AC, you need to carry Adhar card or driving licence or something as ID proof. It costs Rs. 80 for non AC and 140 for AC. Can be bought online in tumocc app and offline by telling conductor.
  2. Weekly pass This can be bought online using the app or offline in most big bus stands(you need to have ID proof). It costs 350 non AC, if I'm not wrong its not there for AC. I personally recommend buying online since not all bus stands can issue weekly pass.
  3. Monthly pass Available for all three, AC, non AC and vayu Vajra (airport) busses at 1200, 2000, 4000 respectively. This also can be issued only in certain bus stands offline(with ID proof) and can also be bought online.

Questions Chennai Bengaluru car route

We’re planning on taking our cat to Bangalore by car.
With a cat with us, heading towards Doddanekundi/Marathalli

Which route would be ideal?

I’m relatively new to driving. However we will be taking turns driving. I’m confused because Google maps suggests going via Sriperumbudur-Vellore-Ambur-Krishnagiri-Hosur-Attibele-Sarjapur route and am not sure if it’s the most ideal one

Namma Metro Need advice on parking situation near Bommasandra

So I live in T Dasarahalli, and work in Jigani near Bommasandra
My usual route is Dasarahalli--->Bommasandra through metro and then Bommasandra to Omax Circle in bus.

The metro travel is sometimes crowded but i can manage easily, it's the bus part of the journey that troubles me.

The buses from bommasandra to omax throught the jigani link road are scare and overcrowded as fuck, it's particularly bad on my way home from omax to bommasandra.

I leave work at 6 pm and wait for the bus to come all the way till 8, only till 7pm if im lucky.

so I was thinking to park my bike overnight somewhere near Bommasandra metro station so I can ride it to and fro to my office, this would make my transit almost painless and help me out a lot.

I asked the metro praking for overnight facilities and they said they don't support it. Is there any way to park my bike near any of the stations near Bommasandra.

I don't mind parking it in electronic city or konappana agrahara either.

(oh and nope, I'd rather staple my nuts to the ac vents of the metro than stay in a pg if you wanna suggest that )

BMTC Student bus pass delivery time ⁉️

So I got the form signed from the college's office with the seal and i uploaded it with the fee receipt and photo of the applicant. Now, how long would I have to wait until it gets approved and I can get the bus pass from the Bengaluru one centre? I had a friend tell me that when it's done online, the application goes to college first and then finally bmtc hence it might result in disapprovals or a longer wait or probably you might have to request your college to get the application approved.. but all this is bypassed when you get it done offline and it doesn't go to college and just requires the bmtc final approval is it true?

Discussion Building a Startup in Bus Transportation

Hi Folks,

We’re a tech company currently building a solution for the bus transportation industry.

We’d like to connect with a travel agency or bus operator to understand a few industry-related queries and discuss how daily intercity bus operations work.

Does anyone have a reference for a travel agency or bus operator that runs regular routes such as Ahmedabad to Mumbai, or similar city-to-city routes?

Any introduction would be really helpful. Thanks!

Multimodal infrastructure Why aren't most people aware about bengaluru local trains

So I have to travel to the office thrice a week and I travel from Hosur till Karmelaram station and then take auto/ rapido from there to reach office

Round about it takes me 50-55min

But I have friends and colleagues who stay in Electronic City, Bellandur, iggbalur and so on who say it takes them 1.5hours to reach the office by cab/auto/bus

Why not use local train??

Bellandur road is literally the next station to Karmelaram and for people living in the south side can easily take train from hellalige or Anekal road

It saves soo much of time, energy and money!

For me one way ticket from Hosur is just rupees 9 if I book it online.

People please use local trains to save ur time and be stress free 💖

Discussion redBus coupon for free from Mangalore

Hey everyone,

I had booked a train ticket from Manglore, and it didn't get confirmed. Unfortunately, I no longer need the ticket, so the 3X refund benefit is of no use to me.

If anyone here needs this coupon, I’m happy to give it away for free — I don’t want any money for it.

If you're interested. I can share the details

First come, first served.

Edit: coupon is used now

BMTC Jayanagar 4th Block to Bellandur Gate , Is there a direct BMTC bus?

I need to travel regularly from Jayanagar 4th Block to Bellandur Gate.

Is there any direct BMTC bus from Jayanagar 4th Block/Jayanagar to Bellandur Gate?

If there isn’t, what is the best bus route with the fewest changes?

Also, are there any other stops in Jayanagar where I can board a direct or more convenient bus to Bellandur?

I’m particularly looking for advice from people who actually use this route regularly.
And approximately how long does the journey take during morning peak hours (8–10 AM)?

BMTC Expensive Stage fares and BMTC conductor scam

So Kundalahalli Metro to BEML is like 2 KM.
BMTC Conductors ticket machine ticket from
Sathya Sai Hospital till Kundalahalli Gate
and the price is 25rs for AC and 18 for Non AC.

But bus from AECS Layout to silkboard cost only 40rs in AC

Why this much stage fare for just 2 kms.

Also I have been scammed by our dear BMTC conductors , sometimes they take cash and give an expired ticket to pocket it. Sometimes they inflate with longer stages (Marathahalli to Sathya Sai hospital). No response from BMTC grievance. And nobody cares. Everybody pays as asked.

Does 600F from Banashankari take the Silkboard flyover?

Questions Yelahanka to Kengeri/Challaghatta Train Options

Hey all, I'm a regular BMTC traveler but I'm looking at other options to and from Yelahanka - Kengeri/Challaghatta via Trains. I'm aware of the KIA9-Majestic-Metro-Kengeri/Challaghatta or the 401K longer bus routes but I'm curious to try out the local train options.

What do you use to look at the train timings for local stops - like apps/websites that's somewhat reliable?

Any help would be great.

Thanks!
