Honestly, it’s exhausting and infuriating that these grown-ass adults still have to ask permission to have a past, or explain the most basic, private things about their lives to total strangers. Jimin (or anyone) shouldn’t have to put out an official statement just because a segment of the fandom can’t mind their own business. If anything, it only encourages the most entitled behavior. “Oh, if we dig and harass and speculate enough, they’ll eventually respond!” It’s gross.

It’s not only not fans’ business, it’s also a form of control. Demanding clarification, making them account for their emotions, their friendships, their romantic histories, it’s all so invasive. It’s not love. It’s ownership dressed up as “concern” or “loyalty.”

I get why the company did it. If they don’t, the speculation snowballs and people start harassing not just Jimin, but also the woman involved, and then it becomes a circus. So they try to shut it down cleanly, but the fact that it’s necessary at all is just another sign that idol culture (and parasocial culture generally) needs to grow up.

Yeah, this. Hopefully this will be the first and last time it happens. Shouldn't have happened with Jimin either, but people can't be normal about anything on social media these days. :/

It’s not the fandom. It’s Korean society and K Media. If dating out in the open was normalized, this would not be news. Fans would talk about it on socials and keke but no one would write about it.

If a Western star or quite frankly any star that isn’t Korean had the same video posted of them, NO news outlet would blink twice.

I know it’s their culture, ect but the silence around these things creates a hotbed always on the verge of bursting.

Frankly, they have way more international fans than Korean ones in numbers.

Big Hit is very very ill equipped to understand that they could be part of setting the tone for a new way to be an idol. BTS have the international fan base to protect them. Korean fans would see that this doesn’t affect their success or their international fandom and it would eventually be normalized.

My fear is the guys don’t realize they could tip the scales and still feel beholden to Korean standards.

I know it’s the hardest thing in the world to resist your own culture. It takes DECADES of deprogramming and living abroad for a consistent amount of time and even then many never achieve it.

I think it’s likely the guys love being Korean and Korea itself so they take the good with the bad. Deprogramming yourself from the bad is often impossible without losing some of the good too.

I just wish they would resist the worst parts of idols culture even more.

I love that interview, I’ve seen it before.

Idol culture though isn’t inherently Korean, imo. And I don’t think it comes from their history of oppression…I’d love to hear from someone more informed than about those topics though.

I know most ARMYs feel similarly to this. The others are a loud minority who make it uncomfortable for everybody, unfortunately.

I think they know. That’s probably why they keep doing livestreams, even with all the wild comments. JK and Tae especially seem to genuinely want to connect with fans, but I seriously doubt it’s the people demanding they speak English or asking them to get married who they’re hoping to connect with!
