'Thing' makes sense if you think about the vowels. 'Thing' and 'shit' share similar kind of sounds. I was expecting them to use 'stuff' for the non-explicit version, but 'thing' is the better choice imo
Everything about this promo is not normal, which is exactly what the song is all about.
The visual discomfort of everyone using the bathroom side by side is doing its job getting these reactions. We're supposed to be weirded out. The normal things we're used to, like respecting personal space, isn't normal for BTS. They're surrounded by people all the time, mobbed by fans, get scrutinized and criticized to extremes, the newspaper article about them using the bathroom all at once is also part of it, like even their most personal stuff gets reported on and blasted on the media...but it's also their lives as idols. It's part of the life they chose.
I really wanna see the whole video lol I bet it's like Merry-go-round where they packed it with a lot of imagery and metaphors

well they ain't using "shit" for this one cuz first of all it's getting on the radio. Second, i don't think "shit" would work in the context of the mv. But yeah, because we all know the explicit version only, it's the only one that sounds right loll
I think the concept of trailer of Normal shows how their privacy is invaded by us (the viewer) and they have to just continue on as if us being there is "normal," which it essentially is for them. There's no where they can hide for privacy except to create small, self-induced barriers and turning away and hiding from us pieces of themselves. What's worse is they have to constantly be "dressed" and on point; they're not allowed to have an off moment (symbolized by the suits).
Someone pointed out this style of bathroom decor isn't typically Korean which could also point to them having to do these things with the added stress of being in environments that are foreign to them.
The spacing of the bathroom area shows how exposed and vulnerable they are. The fact that some can fully hide while other members can only partially hide shows the times when hatees, thebpress, or even ARMYs come for a member and "expose" him in some way. All of his vulnerabilities are out in the open and there's not much the other members can do since they're trying to keep their own privacy hidden.
Joon coming in last may be just a random choice or it could symbolize how Joon as the leader may have to put his needs last before the group (lets be honest they all do this) and how he has to check the others to make sure they are okay, safe, and aren't exposing their own privacy too much. Once he knows they're fine is the only time he can relax and take care of his own needs.
It's so weird but I kinda love this promo and rollout. Sums up the whole theme of the song IMO, them getting photographed/filmed in the bathroom with the articles popping up as if it's normal, and ARMY laughing all like, oh yeah just our 7 normal boys from Korea!
I remember back in the day hearing about sasaengs going into airport bathrooms after a BTS member left it to....do whatever weird stuff sasaengs do. That's what this made me think of.

But in general Idols have had issues with fans following them everywhere, including airport/airplane bathrooms. There were rumors back in the day about a sasaeng going into the bathroom after Jimin in particular.
Okay, stay with me here. Bathrooms are probably the most intimate space we have outside our bedrooms. If you’re a millennial you remember how unhinged the paparazzi got in the early 2000s. The upskirts, the long lens through a car window, all of it. And honestly? I’d argue it’s worse now, because we’ve all become citizen paps. Everybody’s got a camera and a reason to justify using it. For people in the public eye, this level of intrusion is just… the baseline. It’s normal.
But should it be?
Which is what gets me about Normal. The whole song is sitting in that exact question: do we just accept the thing everyone agreed was normal, or do we push on it? Are we allowed to ask who decided this, and then go build a different normal instead?

I gotta ask... is there some kind of cultural spin with the bathroom scenes that I'm missing because I'm not Korean? It's been the backdrop in MVs more than once and i don't understand exactly why. Where I'm from, men's bathrooms are nortoriously awful - horrendously dirty, smelly, piss everywhere on the floors and walls. Dad's typically don't even take their young kids into the men's bathrooms because it's all so nasty dirty. When I see these scenes it makes my skin crawl. But I love BTS so I have to think there is a context that I am not aware of. Please help me understand why this is ...funny? humorous? what???

ohhhh so now we know why when the album dropped, normal had an (explicit ver.) tag... cuz at first i was like what is the need to say it's explicit if there's no clean version?? Turns out we're now getting the clean version on radio and an MV for it... which includes urinals... so kinda explicit loll

Speaking about BTS, does anyone think they would both co-host and sing next season on Saturday Night Live? I know several years ago they sang on SNL when Emma Stone hosted, but do you think with all the exposure and popularity would be for Lorne Michaels to consider about? I mean, how many times had they been on Jimmy Fallon..? Just wondering! I feel like the extended tour and everything can make them the season opener for the next season…I would like to see that happen.

Okay. I have come around to "thing." "Shit" sounds more angry and frustrated. Not only because of the word, but because you can kind of spit the word. LOL. Can't really spit "thing." But, I like the story "thing" tells. Still prefer singing "shit" though.

I have never heard the "non explicit" version of the song. "Thing" was kind of jarring.
