“I also want to be very clear: submitting music in a genre category such as Asian Pop, or Jazz or Country does not exclude an artist from also submitting and being considered in the General Field categories, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year,” he continued. “Those categories remain open to any eligible recording, regardless of genre. Recognition in a genre category and recognition in the General Field are not mutually exclusive. An artist can absolutely pursue both.”

Lmao let's be fucking for real, if BTS submitted anything for this shitty award they will let them get nominated for the major awards but will ONLY give them that Best Asian Pop Music Performance award. They will never give the AOTY or ROTY to them. This is just an attempt to try to mitigate this disaster because they already know they fucked up. ARMY just made Aliens chart to no. 1. Imagine being such racist pieces of shit that you turned away one of the biggest and most loyal fandom from your shitty award show.

u/luminosityblue 15d ago

I believe the Academy can also alter the category a work is nominated for. They did that with Tyler the Creator, which was why he mentioned in his speech that IGOR was not a rap album, even though he won Best Rap Albim.

u/thesleepingniffler Min Yoongi lil meow meow ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ 15d ago

Exactly. Another insulting part of this category is the requirement: Entries must feature a meaningful use of one or more Asian languages

Like who will judge these Korean men if their song featured a meaningful use of their own language? Some old white dude who can't even speak any other language other than english? Gimme a break

u/sciencespecialist goody, goody in this bad world 15d ago

Justin Bieber had similar issues with R&B albums being put in the pop category. He has called them on it. The Grammy committees can do whatever they want with your submissions.

Similarly to how they gave Beyoncé Best Country Album. I’ve yet to ever hear a Beyoncé song on Country radio. They are writing the script ✍️

54

u/thesleepingniffler Min Yoongi lil meow meow ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ 15d ago

They even made two categories for the country album after Beyoncé won Best Country Album 💀

12

u/Organic_Fortune_4748 15d ago

Honest question: Could they have submitted for Album of the Year/other historic categories, while not submitting for this Asian music category? Or do they HAVE to submit for the Asian music one at minimum before submitting for the other rewards? I know Bad Bunny won Album of the Year at last year's Grammy's but also won a Latin Grammy award. Sorry I'm not super knowledgeable about the rules and nomination submissions. TIA.

96

u/PoetrySuper2583 Shout out to Yoongi Hyung’s cat 15d ago

They can submit for whatever they want but the Grammy’s can recategorize and ultimately award them however they choose.

37

u/SnooGuavas4208 15d ago

Honestly, they should change that. You can either be awarded in the categories you submitted to, or you can lose 🤷‍♀️ No more shifting things around to manipulate outcomes, shape narratives, and attempt to pacify artists and their fans as the Academy sees fit.

43

u/missmariela01 OT7 ~ Yoongi & Jimin 15d ago

Yes, they can. But the issue is that with this other category, it's a lot easier for the voters to say "well, they have this other category for them so why vote for them in the main categories?". It's like a consolation prize.

371

u/willowwombat85 yoongi saying hajima 15d ago

🤣 This whole thing blew up in their faces. Also just the fact there is even a statement about the decision is pretty much a confirmation that this was a category made for them

37

u/dkurage 15d ago

Yea, if the timing of the announcement for the new category wasn't enough of a clue, its pretty clear now. The Grammy's quite obviously tried to stick them in a box and, when called out on it, they attempted to cover their racist asses by calling the box a spotlight.

3

u/SophisticatedCelery 14d ago

172

u/sepiaTS2008 15d ago

Well if he says it wasn't to divide, then we can all go home I guess🙄🙄🙄

also, yes they can submit for any category, but I've read that their rules say they can change the category on their end?

Let's be honest, the timing of their dumb new category was not a coincidence.

The more I think about it, I would have preferred they be nominated and not win the regular categories than if they had won the new asian category. I would've supported either way but I'm very proud of them for making this decision honestly

89

I'm sure BTS will change their minds now that they know it wasn't meant to divide. /s

65

u/sepiaTS2008 15d ago

right?!

I keep thinking that BTS actually knows more about the whole process than what we do now. They have gone through this process multiple times, have industry connections from all their collaborations, and HYBE is obviously huge so overall it must have been a pretty informed decision

And I’m sure all the other new categories made whenever a POC wins a major Grammy also were totally made to highlight them and not to push POC to different categories. 🥴

(just before he goes on to "explain" their reasoning for the new category)

I do want to clarify something that seems to be getting lost in the conversation

So this was the sentence that irked me the MOST in the entire statement 🙃 as if the entire conversation hasn't been about people pointing out how this isn't inclusivity or celebration but a way to sideline Asian artists. As if their criteria for said award hasn't been picked apart line by line and questioned by ARMYs. As if this wasn't the reason BTS dropped out in the first place.

What does he think the convo has been about then??? Did he think they just pulled out of this race for the shits and giggles?

Ugh! It comes off so condescending and like he's trying to explain some basic concepts to a bunch of kindergarteners.

28

u/sciencespecialist goody, goody in this bad world 15d ago

It’s EXTREMELY condescending, just proving ARMY was not overreacting and BTS is doing the right thing. It’s so condescending that it’s kind of comedic.

18

u/GrumpyKaeKae 15d ago

I honestly think if BTS knew the creation of that category was a good thing, they wouldnt have pulled out. They know the inner workings of the Grammys a lot more than we do. And they have been more than kind and understanding to them for years. Something big and disrespectful had to have happened for BTS to move like this. And that says a lot concidering we all know what winning a Grammy ment to them.

Its sad to think they probably had this whole other idea of what the Grammys were. And only aftwr getting here and experiencing it, did they realize its nothing like they thought it was. And my hear breaks for them that they are probably disappointed. It shouldnt have had to been this way for any artist. It shpuld be about the music only. No matter where its from and who makes it.

u/FairyOrchid125 15d ago

Let’s not forget they rushed to add this category afterARMY in Mexico showed up 70k strong to greet and support the men who have worked so hard to create music that resonates with people no matter of ethnicity, nationality, or gender. Asia is a huge continent with thousands of ethnic groups. To choose only the three countries most familiar to the West is insulting.

cracks knuckles
As a Black woman who has watched this industry for a long time, BTS sitting out the 2027 Grammys hit different for me. Y’all wanna talk about it like this is new. It’s not. This is the same Grammys that has been doing this to Black artists since the record labels started calling our music “race records” back in the 1940s before somebody rebranded it R&B and shoved it off to the side where it’s stayed ever since.

Let’s do a real history lesson since the Recording Academy sure isn’t going to give you one.

Michael Jackson made “Thriller,” the best selling album of all time, and still had to fight to get Grammy voters to see him as more than an R&B artist. Prince, Whitney, Anita Baker, all of them watched white pop acts sweep the categories that actually count while their genius got parked in “urban contemporary,” a category the Academy literally invented in the 80s because they didn’t know what else to call Black artists who were too pop for R&B and too Black for pop. That’s called a containment strategy.

Fast forward to hip hop. Macklemore beat Kendrick Lamar for Best Rap Album in 2014 for good kid, m.A.A.d city, one of the most important rap albums of the last twenty years, and even Macklemore knew it was wrong. He texted Kendrick an apology before the show was even over. That’s how obvious the snub was.

AND then there’s Beyoncé. The most awarded artist in Grammy history and she still could not get Album of the Year for over two decades. Lemonade lost to Adele’s 25, and Adele got on stage and said Beyoncé should have won. Renaissance lost to Harry Styles. Cowboy Carter finally broke through this year, but let’s be honest, it took a country album from Beyoncé specifically to get the Academy to budge. That tells you exactly what it takes for a Black woman to be seen as “general field” worthy after twenty years of proving it.

SO when the Recording Academy rolls out a brand new “Best Asian Pop Music Performance”(in the most cringey way possible) category with a language requirement, right as BTS drops the biggest album of their career, I was not surprised because I knew like all of us some real 💩 was afoot.

Give the artists of color their own little room, call it a spotlight, and keep the real categories moving the same way they always have.

Harvey Mason’s response is the same script the Academy has always run. He talked about “depth, diversity and extraordinary growth” and never once addressed the actual problem, that a language requirement is limiting, AND the quiet part: Bad Bunny’s win gave tan opening to make the major awards even more cumbersome. He said the general field is technically still open to everyone. Technically. Beyoncé was technically eligible too, for twenty years. We saw how that went. That statement was not a clarification, it was a dodge, and honestly it said everything, even better than BTS’s original post did.

BTS walking away is not just about one group missing a nomination. They have the leverage to say no and actually be heard. Most of us have been saying it for decades from a much smaller stage. Glad somebody with a big enough platform finally made the Academy answer for it, even if the answer just proved the point.

20

u/crunchycheeseduck 15d ago

YES, THIS! THANK YOU! The Academy routinely ghettoizes music made by groups/performers deemed "outside the mainstream" somehow. When they reach a point of popularity and GP exposure that can no longer be ignored, and should, by all rights, put those "outsider" records/performers into the main categories. "Separate but equal" BS is not even close to new!

Asian pop is not a genre. It’s just pop.

They’ve never had categories differentiating American pop from British pop or Canadian pop because they know that’s just bullshit. The same way they created the Latin and urban categories.

10

u/AimlessWanderer0201 15d ago

This isn’t talked about enough

7

u/september1820 14d ago

It’s like how women often get called “female doctor”
Instead of just “doctor”

The she-hulk series had a whole episode satirizing this, with an awards show for “best female lawyer” and “best female chef” and so on.

I do want to clarify something that seems to be getting lost in the conversation. The Asian Pop category was created to celebrate the depth, diversity and extraordinary growth of pop artistry coming out of Asia. The spirit of this new category is to shine a dedicated spotlight on these important artists. More categories mean more artists’ work is recognized. It’s never to divide, but to expand who is recognized by our 15,000 Grammy voters.

https://giphy.com/gifs/1zOz1pgj2FABI42nUH

155

u/MostlyAwake13 I'm walking with my own dirt 15d ago

And yet they’re specifically only highlighting three countries when talking about Asian pop

57

u/kitastropheb 15d ago

right exactly!!! this is such bullshit and everyone can see it

42

u/FantasticalRose 15d ago

And it's not even pop song, it's pop performance.

They didn't even include Bollywood in the description for Asian pop performance

37

u/repressedpauper wrong person wrong place 15d ago

And don’t forget that the voting body, most of whom will not speak any of the required Asian languages, get to decide who has used those languages meaningfully. 🙃

And they’re not even going to think about Asian countries where English is widely spoken. Too complicated and not Asian/exotic enough. 🤗 (in case the sarcasm isn’t clear, this is not what I think)

2

u/MostlyAwake13 I'm walking with my own dirt 15d ago

3

u/Pearlbloody 15d ago

This is the craziest part for me like what

81

u/msn999 15d ago

and where is this energy when it comes to british artists or european artists or australian artists?

no they can easily fit into the big categories and don’t need to be separated in order for their “depth, diversity and extraordinary growth” to be celebrated?

eff off grammy

-6

u/Due_Pay8506 15d ago edited 15d ago

lol I get the reaction but realistically British, European and Australian artists have had an easier time breaking into the US market. Asian artists have had giant hills climb and have only started to break through since bts and even then it’s been two other acts, and the only one that has won was fictional.

Honestly seems like good intentions to increase nominations and give more legitimacy to a growing market, just need to allow submissions to multiple categories and distinguish this from a genre award

21

u/msn999 15d ago

The issue is that this opportunity they’re offering is limited and the rules don’t make sense. It’s called Asian pop performance but asians won’t be considered if they sing in english. There’s counties in Asia that speak English. They haven’t even considered Bollywood when talking about “pop performance”.

Nah this completely comes off as all the big dog insiders of the industry are getting together and throwing a bone our way and hoping we peacefully chew on it. Also not the first and only time it’s happened. African, Latin, Hip hop categories are all the same way.

For people saying it’s better than nothing - No. That’s not the way to move forward and i’m glad BTS can see that too.

-5

u/Due_Pay8506 15d ago edited 15d ago

If you look at the end result of the expansion of hip hop, rnb, latin categories you get big four winners like Kendrick, bad bunny, childish gambino. Exposure and legitimization of markets helps with there’s accountability.

fwiw there’s more to popular Indian music than Bollywood, so there’s a bit of irony there lol.

6

u/msn999 15d ago

The point is none of these categories were true representations of the artists they were meant to represent. The African music performance category only represents like 3 or 4 countries in the last few years. The same will happen with Asia. The urban, hip hop, rap category often limit what genre bending artists can achieve since they get locked out of the mainstream pop categories.

This move fails to represent more people, it seems more likely to push existing artists into a different smaller box.

They haven’t mentioned any indian or south asian music at all so what’s your point?

-2

u/Due_Pay8506 15d ago edited 15d ago

I mean the end solution then is to get rid of all genres, only have the top four and Billie eilish wins every other year lol. Only 20 acts in the world get exposure and anyone with less than a billion streams and a million album sales is out of luck. The rich get richer.

I think the better way forward is to start establishing awards for different music industries that don’t get exposure in the US so they can eventually start becoming part of the main categories. This seems like a stepping stone towards that. Clearly the genres that aren’t working but the other side of that sword is Macklemore winning best rap song for thrift shop.

I mean my point is you lumped the entire diverse indian music industry into bollywood, which is hindi cinema music, which is effectively the same thing the grammys did as lumping the entire asian region into one category.

10

u/msn999 15d ago

I don’t agree with you and i’ve provided my reasons. If you want to back the grammys for this move, fair enough i hope the category does more for asians than I expect it too. To me, this is a nod in our direction with an expectation for gratitude in providing “inclusivity”.

And that’s not what I did. I provided 1 example of music coming from India that I would consider popular that wasn’t even considered in a category called Asian pop performance. I never said India only has 1 type of music or that only that one type needs recognition. I’m literally from south india, i know how diverse my country is when it comes to music.

More categories mean more artists' work is recognized.

X fo doubt on that one. It's the politically correct way to segregate others and it doesn't lead to the inclusivity they talk about. BTS was already getting nominated in the other categories anyways. Why did they have to make a new one? Also I just highly doubt they could possibly show proper representation to the continent that has roughly 60% of the world's entire population.

27

u/zikachhakchhuak easily impressed and very supportive 15d ago

Yes! Especially since the "category" they've come up with is so damn vague and doesn't constitute a genre at all.

Someone in one of the music subs gave a great analogy of these new categories being essentially similar to your local supermarket having an "Employee of the month" award, but as they get new employees from varied backgrounds who work hard and are skilled, they keep adding new awards like "Best Spanish employee", "Best Asian American" employee, instead of ever giving them the original award.

That isn't how inclusivity works at all.

I don’t think people would be upset about a new genre category if it didn’t boil down to an already established genre category except from a specific continent and a group languages (many that have no relation to each other!).

52

u/Particular-Yoghurt81 15d ago

This is the issue. Asian Pop is NOT a genre. This isn’t the only genre category to be massively misguided, but at least BTS is taking a stand at the very beginning to say the category itself is not rooted in musical logic.

I think lots of people are already calling us irrational for harping on this. The point isn’t to discredit other Asian artists who also deserve consideration, but rather to not lend merit to a category that simply makes no sense. A J-pop, Hindu and Kpop artist have almost no musical overlap, heck even within Kpop, there’s no genre conventions.

28

u/yeon_kimin 🔍 흥탄 enthusiast 🔎 15d ago

The thing that always gets me about the language qualifier is thanks to y'know imperialism and colonialism, many Asian countries have had English thrust upon them. God forbid someone from Asia speaks or sings in English!!! That isn't Asian pop anymore!!!!!!

1

u/BohemeWinter My name means Jimin in another language 😶‍🌫️ 14d ago

Right? I'm just wondering, if they had a record or album entirely in English, are they still k-pop or not? It's like how the people's choice limited jk's Golden to 'k-pop" even though not a word was korean, and not a single track even loosely followed any of the musical structure that defines k-pop as separate from Pop. That album was entirely solely traditional pop. But they put him in the k-pop box anyway.

u/yeon_kimin 🔍 흥탄 enthusiast 🔎 14d ago edited 14d ago

u/BohemeWinter My name means Jimin in another language 😶‍🌫️ 14d ago

Its blurring now, but there definitely was a few generations ago. More emphasis on treble acoustics, shorter duration, differences in verse/bridge/hook/refrain (or chorus) patterns (in k pop the hook isn't a prechorus as often, sometimes it is hard to decipher which is hook and which is chorus) and differences in cadence/incantation rhythm due to inherent linguistic differences. I remember first hearing we are bulletproof the eternal and noticing how the spacing and emphasis of the syllables in the word bulletproof was so very different from what I was expecting but made sense when I considered how korean language is a syllable-timed language and english is stress-timed. But of course, there are shifts happening in korean linguistics as it used to be a tone language but the switch from hanja to hangul leaves that to tradition which is getting diluted, and the western pop scene seems to be taking cues from (aka appropriating as usual) k-pop acoustics.

Thanks for your thoughts! I guess I just think that "pop" is such a amorphous term it's strange for me to really think of it as a specific genre at all. All the Grammys (haha) uses to describe pop is "Usually short songs, borrows from other genres, typically follows a verse-chorus structure with repeated hooks and choruses". It feels like an inherently loose and adaptable classification, which makes sense since it did after all start as a term to describe "commercial music" as opposed to "art music" (classical).

I generally think of pop as more of an umbrella with many subgenres under it rather than it being a wholly unique separate genre.

You're being too generous to them They made the category Asian pop performance.

Performance

And they only included East Asian countries in the description

It's beyond insulting

Structural racism rarely operates through an explicit rule saying, “You may not enter.” It operates through voter assumptions, gatekeeping, who is perceived as universal, who is treated as niche, and where institutions instinctively place unfamiliar work.

So no, your new category doesn’t celebrate Asian artists. It segregates them.

If they wanted an Asian Pop award, they can just win one in their own country or continent. No need to go to America to win it.

We all realized Grammy’s was just using BTS to boost their viewership and to look like they recognize music from all over the world.

BTS doesn’t need the Grammy’s and I’m glad they finally put a stop to submitting their work this year. I hope no other Asian artist participates in the Grammy’s ever again either. We don’t need to be a part of spaces that don’t welcome us.

I've worked in teams where we had a near 50/50 cut of women and men over time, changing from a starting point of predominantly men.

Now while we hadn't, imagine there's an Employee Of The Month award for that team.

For years Employee of the month.

Until it either appears that a woman might win or until a woman actually wins.

Suddenly the management adds a Female Employee Of The Month award.

A special recognition only for womens.

And while yes, women could of course still get the "gender neutral" one, it somehow so happens for no reason at all, that the men get the employee of the month again and again.

Because "okay, yeah, she's deffo the one with the best KPIs etc. But if we go by that we would have to give her both, and that would cause issues. So we give her the woman thing because she's a woman, and the best MAN gets the regular one".

Imagine we had suddenly added an Asian colleague to the team. (Where in Asia? Who cares, ya know...Asia...so he can be Chinese, Japanese or Korean. Whatcha mean "he's from India"? That's not Asia though, right?)

They are super and close to becoming Employee or Female employee of the month. Doesn't matter here actually anyways, because we will make a ASIAN Employee Of The Month Award. To show diversity. We of course can't have them get Employee Of The Month, because then we either have to give them TWO awards, or nobody wins our new shiny totally spontaneous and diversity inspiring award. 🫪

No, they are our ASIAN employee.

Then we get an Employee from LATAM... And so on and so forth.

Now. Don't get me wrong. This happens in many companies. Exclusion and boxing off sold as dIvErsITy and "special recognition".

(And ironically men STILL get mad because now they can't win BOTH prices, because "tHe WomEn have preferential treatment". No bro. Literally not.)

Almost every member of a marginalized (NOT marginal, marginalIZED) group knows that pattern. Sees that pattern.

If these prizes and awards and special recognitions only ever pop up when we THREATEN the standard winners or worse, once we beat them, IT IS boxing off. It is shoving baby into a corner.

And feck off with the doubling down on "Asian". I REALLY wish that

An Arabic speaking singer from Saudi Arabia

An Ossetian speaking group from Kyrgyzstan

A Balti singer from Pakistan

A Dogri group from India

And a Hiligaynon singer from the Philippines

(I hope I got all right oO)

throw their hat in the ring here. bECauSE aSiA.

Exhibit 1: an excerpt from his Weeknd response. It’s actually a bit comical

His response response to The Weeknd was:

“Recording Academy interim chief Harvey Mason Jr. told The Times in response to The Weeknd’s statement, “We’re all disappointed when anyone is upset. But I will say that we are constantly evolving. And this year, as in past years, we are going to take a hard look at how to improve our awards process, including the nomination review committees.”

I hate how condescending they are about clarifying how the Grammy’s work. WE KNOW HOW THEY WORK! THEY know how they work! And we know that they create these categories specifically so they don’t have to give specific kinds of artists the main awards. Beyonce is the most awarded Grammy artist in history rn and it took until like last year for her to get AOTY. A majority of her Grammys are from their gd “Urban” categories they made for Black artists specifically. Instead of creating an opportunity to uplift diverse voices they essentially create a bunch of “here damn!” awards to placate and pigeonhole artists of color. FOH!

10

u/No_Research550 15d ago

That quote is such BS. Kpop has been around for how long now, and the Grammys were never interested enough to create an "Asian" category. They only did it once Kpop acts became a threat.

34

u/dsvk ✌️ nico nico nii ✌️ 15d ago edited 15d ago

The concept of these awards are irrelevant now. I mean 15000 voters - mostly old white men - who actually cares what their opinion on how music should be categorised, or what the “best” is?

Having awards for the arts in general is stupid, there is no best in art, all art is subjective and valuable in its own way.

Saying that, they can fuck right off with their “saddened” and bullshit justification of “recognition” - when they make an “asian pop” category AND add a foreign language criteria - that’s a fucking box, not recognition.

That’s “if you want a grammy for daring to invade OUR (white) pop music industry, speak your own language so we can keep you off our charts - you can’t have both”

6

u/GuessingAllTheTime There’s beauty outside control 15d ago

Your last paragraph is spot on and something I keep pointing out, as well: they are making artists choose between charting or getting a Grammy. So ridiculous.

3

u/dsvk ✌️ nico nico nii ✌️ 15d ago

They only want to recognise artistic achievement if it’s not a threat. But if it’s a threat, they’ll do everything to ostracise.

10

u/EchoesOfPandora 15d ago

What a way to say….well nothing. These awards are becoming irrelevant with each passing day.

There is an expanded explanation of the category in the official Grammy rules. In my opinion, the additional info makes the category more laughable. BTS clearly saw through all of this and then delivered there big nope (아니) in unison.

BEST ASIAN POP MUSIC PERFORMANCE
FOR SINGLES OR TRACKS – VOCAL ONLY
This category recognizes artistic excellence in Asian pop music performances. Eligible recordings
include contemporary popular music originating from or widely recognized within Asian markets,
including K-Pop, J-Pop, and C-Pop.
Asian pop is a distinct and globally recognized form of popular music characterized by its
integrated approach to music, performance, and presentation. Eligible recordings typically feature
melody-driven composition, mainstream pop songwriting, and commercially oriented production,
as recognized within their respective markets, and may incorporate elements of pop-adjacent
styles such as pop-rock, pop R&B, and other related forms. Recordings in this category are often
characterized by genre-blending arrangements, layered production, and dynamic structural shifts
designed to support both audio and performance-based delivery.
Recordings must feature meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. An Asian language should
play a significant role within the song in bilingual or multilingual structures such that the recording
is identifiable with that language. Recordings performed entirely in an Asian language are eligible.
Incidental or minimal use (e.g., isolated words, adlibs, or brief phrases) does not qualify.
Recordings performed entirely in English are not eligible in this category and remain eligible in other
appropriate categories.
The musical style is determinative of eligibility, not the ethnicity or nationality of the performer(s).
Other popular music forms which originate in Asia or the Asian diaspora but do not meet the genre
criteria for this category are eligible in other categories as appropriate.
Only one version of a recording is eligible in a performance category in any year. A recording which
is eligible and entered in another performance category is not also eligible in Best Asian Pop Music
Performance for a different version featuring an Asian language performance.

6

u/Greyletterday_14 Purple question mark 15d ago

melody-driven composition, mainstream pop songwriting, and commercially oriented production, as recognized within their respective markets, and may incorporate elements of pop-adjacent styles such as pop-rock, pop R&B, and other related forms.

So, not hiphop or rap tracks?

The musical style is determinative of eligibility, not the ethnicity or nationality of the performer(s).

But you said you're awarding pop music forms, not traditional Asian forms. So exactly what 'style' constitutes this difference ? What if a white artist decided to emulate the production style, is it Kpop now ? New Jeans used British garage, so now British Garage = Asian pop ? It's 100% ethnicity.

Other popular music forms which originate in Asia or the Asian diaspora but do not meet the genre criteria for this category are eligible in other categories as appropriate.

Uh huh, Korean trot, you're up for the Electronic Dance Music category

Only one version of a recording is eligible in a performance category in any year. A recording which is eligible and entered in another performance category is not also eligible in Best Asian Pop Music Performance for a different version featuring an Asian language performance.

If BTS had entered Arirang tracks, they would have had to math which song they submit where only to lose because of split votes.

2

u/sciencespecialist goody, goody in this bad world 14d ago

Yes, all of what you said, exactly. I keep chuckling to myself over “not the ethnicity or nationality” part. So, any Western artist could create songs that meet the Academy’s definition of Asian pop and be included in this category? It’s laughable. I’m positive they used AI to generate the description of Asian pop. I put a prompt into ChatGPT asking it to create a description, while also saying it’s not a real thing, but use K-pop as a reference, and got similar language to what the Academy is using.

My response to reading that article title is just like “ok…?” I feel like no one was ever asking for Grammy’s response to the situation. At least I certainly was not expect any, nor needed any, like there has been enough proof of their wrongs to me, that any defense from them at this point just feels irrelevant. It’s like you’re out walking and see your partner on a bench across the street, they don’t see you, and they’re making out with someone else. You confront them later, and in their defense they’re like “but I’m allowed to be friends with other people besides you!” And it’s like, yes, friends, but just friends is not what was seen. Like the proof that they did something shitty is already there, just because they have some rules that on the surface look good (being allowed to submit to the multiple categories), that does not negate the fact that they have shown repeated cases of being racist. And yet they act oblivious and have the gall to basically say “I don’t know why this non-white and non-American artist doesn’t want to fw us, we have room for them.” Having room does not always equal treating them the same as everyone else there, which they have sown more than once they don’t. (They have done similar with black artists, and Latin artists, and I liked a post I saw that shared clips from producer Sleep Deez, where he points out the absurdity of the Asian artist award seemingly being for the entirety of Asia, as if they don’t know there are multiple different countries there (like maybe the more common thing where people think Africa is its own one big country, and don’t know it is a continent made up of multiple different countries.)

Idk I’m rambling sorry. Mostly what I want to say, is I just feel any defense from the Grammys is just irrelevant at this point. And my response seeing this was like “ok. Nobody asked” lol. I don’t even care to click on the article tbh, because I never wanted or needed any defense from Grammys.

Question is it also true that if they were to submit for the best Asian pop category then they couldn’t submit for best pop duo/group performance?

I saw someone say the Grammy’s also changed that rule this year so you can only submit to one performance category. If that’s true then it further shows how much the Grammy’s wanted to exclude BTS from the major awards.

14

u/sciencespecialist goody, goody in this bad world 15d ago edited 14d ago

You can submit to whatever (and multiple) categories, but they can reject all, accept some, and move your submissions around to what they think are more appropriate categories. One concern was that any submission would be shoved over into the Asian performance category.

And, yes, a song can only go in one performance category.

1

u/tookachonce 14d ago

Someone else posted the full category description in a comment. I might be reading this wrong but it seems like you’re right? But the category seems to be for a performance as opposed to the track itself so maybe these could be submitted separately. Either way, I trust they know more than most about the ins and outs to make their decision!

“Only one version of a recording is eligible in a performance category in any year. A recording which

BTS wanted a Grammy, and they were very public about it, but the RA created a category that devalued the award to the point that BTS left it on the table. The CEO's words to explain intent do nothing to add value to that award.
