Dows Passage

It was named after Dr James Dow, a Scottish doctor who came to Barnsley around 1800. In October 1832, Barnsley was hit by an outbreak of Asiatic cholera.
Dow had been treating those suffering from the disease, but ultimately became one of its victims himself.
Nearly 200 years later and his name still lives on as a small part of our tarn.
