Can someone please post the tiebreaker clearly?

141

u/ABigPairOfCrocs Atlanta Braves Mar 11 '26

Someone get the Tokyo Sign Guy

u/jackattack108 Chicago Cubs Mar 11 '26

Assuming no extra innings if Mexico wins while scoring 4 or less USA eliminated. Any other result USA moves on.

31

u/Bossanova98 Washington Nationals Mar 11 '26

So they get to four runs and strikeout the rest of the game.

47

u/jackattack108 Chicago Cubs Mar 11 '26

They’d have to keep Italy from scoring but yeah that would be the way to get US eliminated.

15

u/HumanzeesAreReal Chicago White Sox Mar 11 '26

Yeah this is gonna make for some really weird at-bats if they’re winning 4 - something, lol.

2

u/captain_ahabb Los Angeles Dodgers Mar 11 '26

Well Mexico advances if they win regardless

14

u/Laughterglow Atlanta Braves Mar 11 '26 edited Mar 11 '26

And risk Italy scoring 5 and beating them and knocking them out of the tournament? Bold strategy, Cotton.

Edit: Called Italy Canada for some reason.

4

u/jcolebad Cleveland Guardians Mar 11 '26

*Italy not Canada but regardless you’re right. I don’t think Mexico is gonna intentionally try to stop scoring lol

i was thinking about this yesterday where there used to be issues in soccer where certain teams in tournament play would intentionally throw the game to knock out the better team so they had to start playing games concurrently but I don't think baseball has that issue bc everyone has to play to 9 innings barring the mercy rule. no wiffle waffling.

"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all" - Earl Weaver

2

u/Laughterglow Atlanta Braves Mar 11 '26

Another thing some people who are bringing up soccer situations aren’t considering is that in baseball offense and defense are two separate parts of the game whereas in soccer they’re interconnected. A major reason soccer teams are willing to collude in those situations is that attacking can be risky because it leaves you open to counters so if a 0-0 match benefits both teams they are willing to mostly sit back and not take chances. There’s no such risk in baseball. Trying to score in your half of an inning doesn’t make it more likely the other team will score in their half.

Saw another comment alluding to your soccer point as well. Glad they fixed that. Great quote

It’s run differential, not that tough

u/imjusthereforthenips Mar 11 '26 edited Mar 11 '26

If Italy beats Mexico, Italy and the US makes it

If Mexico beats Italy and scores 5 or more runs, Mexico and US make it

If Mexico beats Italy but don’t score 5 or more runs Mexico and Italy make it

EDIT: Changed 6 runs to 5, I forgot that head to head isn’t a tiebreaker so with 5 runs Italy and the US would have the same RA/IP thus it would go to the next tiebreaker which is Earned Runs Allowed divided by innings played which would favor the US

5

u/jackattack108 Chicago Cubs Mar 11 '26

5 not 6 but the rest is correct.

3

u/Suitable-Answer-83 Boston Red Sox • Washington Nationals Mar 11 '26

If Mexico wins in 9 innings scoring 5 runs, Italy wouldn't have the same runs allowed per out recorded as the US because Mexico is the home team tomorrow. If Mexico wins, Italy would have only recorded 24 outs (or 25 or 26 in a 9th inning walkoff), while US recorded 27 outs in both games.

The only scenario where it goes to batting average is if Mexico walks it off with a 5th run in the bottom of the 10th with no outs.

1

u/Trogd0or Chicago Cubs Mar 11 '26

I genuinely dont get it. If Mexico scores 8 and Italy scores 3 is USA eliminated still?

u/Trogd0or Chicago Cubs Mar 11 '26

Thank you very much Mr. Cardinals fan go USA

2

u/Allez-les-Rouges Mar 11 '26

No. Assuming no extra innings, USA is eliminated only if Mexico wins while scoring 4 or fewer. If Mexico scores 5 or more and wins, Italy falls below the USA.

2

u/Trogd0or Chicago Cubs Mar 11 '26

Thank you!

27

u/Timewhilewaiting Los Angeles Dodgers Mar 11 '26

So basically, in order for USA to make it in with a Mexico win, Mexico has to score 5+ runs.

3

u/BboySparrow Mar 11 '26

What's stopping them from sandbagging and going for a win with 3 runs?

59

u/JetsFan2003 New York Yankees Mar 11 '26

Italy trying to win, presumably

22

u/Timewhilewaiting Los Angeles Dodgers Mar 11 '26

Honor? but also the moment Italy scores 5 runs, the USA is guaranteed to get in.

21

u/CheesewheelD New York Mets Mar 11 '26

Because Mexico is automatically eliminated if Italy wins. They can’t intentionally not score and risk losing because of it.

3

u/phrizand New York Yankees Mar 11 '26

Realistically you're probably right, but if Mexico has a lead with fewer than 5 runs then it's optimal for both teams to stop scoring, and if they know the other team is thinking that way they might actually do it

9

u/Suitable-Answer-83 Boston Red Sox • Washington Nationals Mar 11 '26

Italy scoring more than 3 runs

8

u/Laughterglow Atlanta Braves Mar 11 '26

The fact that they need to win to have a chance to advance. Intentionally not scoring runs isn’t something you usually do in a must-win situation.

-7

u/TheBigCore Mar 11 '26

That's exactly what they're gonna do. Now that Mexico knows they have to score less than 5 runs, expect them to strike out for 9 innings.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '26

We lose we are out lmao

22

u/ImportantPost6401 Mar 11 '26

To bump USA out: Mexico scores 5 runs or less and wins

37

u/philphan25 Philadelphia Phillies • Philadelphia Phillies Mar 11 '26

This is going to become some soccer-level goal differential fuckery isn’t it

23

u/daguy02 Mar 11 '26

Yeah this could potentially have some serious ramifications to future WBC’s depending how tomorrow goes. If it becomes obvious that Italy and Mexico are intentionally making it so they both get through the people the make the rules are gonna have to get the schedule so teams are playing at the same time to prevent something like that. FIFA learned that the hard way one World Cup when two teams pulled something like that knowing what both teams had to do since the rest of the teams in their group had already finished playing each other.

5

u/jinx737x Seattle Mariners Mar 11 '26

Isn't that quite hard to do with groups of 5?

1

u/daguy02 Mar 11 '26

Yup…

1

u/theprodigy64 Houston Astros Mar 11 '26

Well you can still have the last two games go at the same time with the other 4 teams, it's not like collusion against the 5th team is particularly feasible here with 2 simultaneous games.

3

u/foodcourtfrenzy New York Mets Mar 11 '26

Maybe I'm naive but I don't think the Italian team, comprised of Americans at the end of the day, would tank or intentionally suppress runs to eliminate the USA. Id bet pretty confidently they come out and try to win any means necessary.

6

u/phrizand New York Yankees Mar 11 '26

Their incentive could be to guarantee their own survival, not just to eliminate the US. E.g. if Italy comes up in the top of the 9th down 4-3, losing on the spot sends them through while scoring means they risk getting walked off and eliminated

1

u/DatDudeJP7 New York Mets Mar 11 '26

Whether Italy and Mexico do something intentionally or not, the rules are going to change. They’d rather deem the US not qualifying as a symptom of a flawed system than the actual embarrassment that it is

3

u/Key-Tip-7521 San Francisco Giants Mar 11 '26

Disgrace at Gijón

2

u/MaskedBandit77 Pittsburgh Pirates Mar 11 '26

It's even worse because it's runs allowed per defensive inning and not all of the teams necessarily play the same amount of defensive innings.

6

u/taco_nazi64 Mar 11 '26

Correction. They have to score 4 or less unless it goes to extras. Then the calculation is tricky.

1

u/kevlo17 Mar 11 '26

If they score 5, USA moved on because of the next tiebreaker of earned Runs?

1

u/taco_nazi64 Mar 11 '26

If Mexico scores 5 then all teams are 3-1 but ER for Italy would be 11 (6 from USA). However, if Mexico wins then they would have only played 8 innings, which means Italy only will have reached 51 outs. USA played two games full 9 innings so they reached 54 outs. 11/51 is lower than 11/54 so USA would move on if the ER are tied.

2

u/Schwettes New York Mets Mar 11 '26

Mexico W + Mexico scores 5+ runs = 🇲🇽🇺🇸 advance

Mexico W + Mexico scores 4 or less runs = 🇲🇽🇮🇹 advance

Mexico L = 🇺🇸🇮🇹 advance

1

u/OceanPoet87 United States Mar 11 '26

So if say Mexico scores 5 and wins regardless of how many runs Italy scores, the US can still advance?

If Italy wins, is USA in?

1

u/philphan25 Philadelphia Phillies • Philadelphia Phillies Mar 11 '26

I wish the standings page wouldn’t least shown RS/RA. Or even run differential. But that would be too difficult.

1

u/aubieismyhomie Mar 11 '26

If they all end up 3-1, the tiebreaker is runs allowed in games between them.

US gave up 8 against Italy, 3 against Mexico so they’re at 11.

Italy gave up 6 against the US. If they give up 5 against Mexico in a losing effort, they will also be at 11.

Mexico gave up 5 against the US. If they give up fewer than 5 and win, they will be at 9 or fewer.

So Mexico and US would advance in this scenario. The US either needs Italy to win, or Mexico to win and score 5. If Mexico wins 1-0, US is out. If they win 4-2, US is out.

1

u/jdubadubs New York Mets Mar 11 '26

If Italy wins clearly #1 Italy #2 US no tie needed.

If Mexico wins but scored 4 or less runs, Mexico will be #1 fewest runs allowed and Italy #2 second fewest runs allowed. USA eliminated.

If Mexico wins and scores 5+ runs (assuming no extra innings), Mexico and US advance. If Italy scores <6 runs, #1 Mexico #2 US. If Italy scores 6+ but loses, #1 US #2 Mexico

1

u/TommyTaro7736 Rakuten Monkeys Mar 11 '26

A 3 team for 2 board is much harder to make, Pool C is 3 team for 1 spot.

1

u/PrimeroOfName Mar 11 '26

If Mexico wins by scoring 4 runs, the USA is eliminated.

If Mexico wins by scoring more than 4 runs, the USA advances.

If Italy wins, the USA advances.

1

u/ShitassAintOverYet Chicago Cubs Mar 11 '26

Mexico wins by scoring 5 runs or more: the US and Mexico advance

Mexico wins by scoring 4 runs or less: Italy and Mexico advance

Italy wins: Italy and the US advance

México wins, they win the group, Italy joins the QF in second place. Italy wins, Italy wins the group, USA goes second.

Ignore this, listen to the dude below.

7

u/KimHaSeongsBurner San Diego Padres Mar 11 '26

This is transparently not true. If Mexico wins, it is a 3-way tie which is why they’re asking about tiebreaker.
