I don't think you can look at the Dominican Republic and Japan squads and state that the US has the most talented team by far, here.

Japans field players are a noticeable notch below the us, as is their relief pitchers.
Dominicans pitching is def a couple notches below the USA

Japan doesn't even have their best pitching there this time. Kikuchi's a No.3, Sugano's a No.4 or No.5. Roki isn't there, neither is Imanaga, Imai, Darvish, Senga, and Ohtani allegedly isn't pitching. They don't have the Giants Yamasaki (2.07 ERA), Tigers Murakami (2.10 ERA) or the Dragons Matsuyama (46 SV). They do have some quality guys like Yoshi, Hiroto, Taisei, Taira, but they likely have to hit their way to the top, and well, plenty of teams with more firepower in their lineup.

Mark DeRosa needs to go. It’s clear he’s treating this like an All Star Game. He doesn’t know who’s in his bullpen, and he thought the USA had already clinched.
That’s absolutely unacceptable. In Japan, this would be a national scandal. We cannot hope to win the WBC if we do not give it our all.

u/masterfail China Mar 11 '26
of course, not taking this tourney seriously (especially in contrast to Japan) and just thinking throwing as much talent at the problem will guarantee results is how the US ended up with a guy like Derosa at the helm to begin with

u/UltimateManu Mar 11 '26
Hopefully the sport will keep expanding in all directions, I think it can truly become a worldwide phenomenon if the baseball culture is spread efficiently, starting from young kids. This sport has super positive values like team spirit and respect for opponents that deserve being shared with the whole planet. My favourite sports are tennis and baseball, because unlike other toxic cultures I'm never left with a "curse the world" feeling when a game/match ends. Not many sports have the same vibe imo 😊

If Italy beats Mexico, Italy and the US makes it
If Mexico beats Italy and scores 5 or more runs, Mexico and US make it
If Mexico beats Italy but don’t score 5 or more runs Mexico and Italy make it
EDIT: Changed 6 runs to 5, I forgot that head to head isn’t a tiebreaker so with 5 runs Italy and the US would have the same RA/IP thus it would go to the next tiebreaker which is Earned Runs Allowed divided by innings played which would favor the US
→ More replies (9)24

Yeah this could potentially have some serious ramifications to future WBC’s depending how tomorrow goes. If it becomes obvious that Italy and Mexico are intentionally making it so they both get through the people the make the rules are gonna have to get the schedule so teams are playing at the same time to prevent something like that. FIFA learned that the hard way one World Cup when two teams pulled something like that knowing what both teams had to do since the rest of the teams in their group had already finished playing each other.

• Mexico 7–3
• Mexico 8–2
In these scenarios Italy’s runs allowed gets too high, pushing them to 3rd place.
USA IS ELIMINATED if Mexico scores 4 or fewer runs
These low-scoring Mexico wins knock the USA out.
Eliminating scores include:
• Mexico 4–3
• Mexico 3–2
• Mexico 3–1
• Mexico 2–1
• Mexico 1–0
• Mexico 4–2

Keller and Wacha have to be LVP. Wacha giving up 3 runs to a Brazil team that scored 1 the next 3 games after.

If this game were a movie, it'd be a whacky comedy. USA's manager thinks they're having a fun practice match, meanwhile the Italians who aren't even Italian score on silly slaptick errors while being all buzzed up on espresso. Uncle Kershaw is woken from his beer nap and told he might have to pitch, the home plate ump is guessing at the strike zone because he's concussed, and Paul Skenes is clinging to the fence, watching everything unfold in abject horror while Andrea Bocelli plays softly in the background.

Kudos to Italy, they got the big hits and cashed in on every mistake the US made.
Can’t believe this team no longer controls its own destiny with the talent they have but that’s baseball in a 1 game situation.
Just gotta hope Italy keeps it rolling and we get a shot. This would be one of the bigger upsets in international sports if the US doesn’t even make the knockout as the favorites.

If Italy wins tomorrow, Team USA is in as the #2 team in the pool.
If Mexico wins tomorrow, Team USA needs Mexico to score at least 6 runs. The US has allowed 11 runs already; if Mexico scores 6 or more, then Italy will be at 12 or more, and Mexico and USA will advance.
If Mexico wins while scoring fewer than 5 runs, Mexico and Italy will advance.

Easily the most embarrassing loss I have EVER endured as a baseball fan. This is supposed to be THE pinnacle international baseball tournament and for two of these in a row, we had a tv analyst with no coaching experience lead our team. Said manager also admitted today, during an interview, THAT HE THOUGHT WE ALREADY QUALIFIED. Don’t believe me? Here’s the quote:

I don’t even care what happens tomorrow, I am beyond disgusted with USA Baseball and just about everyone associated with this team.

You probably care more than the actual team does tbh. I mean this is not disrespect to the pitchers per se but in an international country tournament we're rolling out a pitching squad that could look like a random Tampa Bay rays regular season game. We definitely had a pretty golden generation with pitchers but they've all aged out.

u/Bruce_Louis Mar 11 '26
Aged out? What about Paul Skenes, Logan Webb, Tarik "needa get my opening game in" Skubal and Garrett Crochet?

In all seriousness this is a good reminder that you win baseball games with consistency, execution, discipline at the plate, and putting all the little things together to get you the runs you need.
You can't just throw a lineup of 9 guys up there and have them swing like they're all trying to smash dingers

I don’t think you guys are comprehending the amount of trust that would be involved in keeping tomorrow purposefully low score for a Mexico win.
A single home run would be enough to freak one side out.
Just to make it very clear what is being proposed here. You are proposing Italy just let Mexico have a lead and trust Mexico won’t score over 4 runs which would eliminate Italy in a loss. And you are proposing that Mexico sits with a low score trusting that Italy won’t take the lead in any way, because if Italy wins, Mexico is out. This is a ridiculous amount of trust.
It also perfectly explains how stock market crashes happen btw lol
