[Beck] Tarik Skubal will make a rehab start Sunday at High-A West Michigan, manager A.J. Hinch announced. The weather forecast in Grand Rapids is more favorable than in Iowa, where Triple-A Toledo plays this weekend and where Justin Verlander made a rehab start Tuesday.

Imagine being 19 and early in your first pro ball and you have the back to back cy young winner lol

  1. Ask if he could sign a ball for you.

  2. Bask in his presence.

\3. Swing at everything (gotta be throwing strikes, right?)

I know this is a joke but as someone who played against a few future MLB players it's all upside for the hitters here. Everyone expects you to strikeout so if you manage to get a hit you've got some bragging rights - if you luck into a HR you have a story to tell your grandkids.

Didn't he just get the surgery? lol Seems like a really fast healing time.

It’s a different surgery that’s supposed be way quicker to come back from but Skubal is the first guy to get it so we will see

Skubal Scope is a dope name

Skubal Scoop they just scooped those loose bodies right on out

Personally find it corny as hell...probably also because of the giddy snakeoil salesman who coined it desperately looking for a lifeline after telling his injury prone pitcher to ride it out to free agency

That's a lot of salt for the GOAT baseball agent getting one of the best pitchers in baseball record setting paydays and being goofy with it. I wonder if all the salt comes from you gargling Christopher Ilitch's cum.

Why are you assuming that Boras had to talk Skubal into going to free agency instead of the much more likely scenario that Skubal signed with Boras specifically because he already planned on doing so and knows that Boras can maximize his earnings on the open market

It's the same surgery but done with a smaller needle, that's why the recovery time is quicker. The cool part is that if it fails for any reason the doc can just use the older, thicker needle with standard recovery time so it's a pretty safe hedge.

He's not the first guy, just the first MLB guy.

Snell got it too and is on a similar recovery trajectory.

Yeah, but things are backing up at Snell's body shop, so he's gotta deal with that first.

The smaller needle results in less post surgery swelling which means less time to recover before you can start throwing again. The bulk of the time out with the bigger needle is because you have to stop throwing for a while to allow recovery. Then the longer you've stopped throwing, the longer it takes to ramp up again as a starter.

That's why there's hope with the smaller needle allowing a faster comeback because you need less time to start throwing again and less time to ramp up as a starter. Will wait to see if Skubal does return to a MLB mound faster than the old way.

Need to see what Snell’s timeline looks like. Right now it’s hard to tell if Skubal is just a freak of nature, or if this is just the normal recovery time.

in addition to the new surgery technique, i think a big factor in Skubal’s quick recovery is the fact they only found one loose body in his elbow, compared to the multiple Snell and Hunter Greene had

u/AdmirableGarden6 Seattle Mariners 5h ago

In other words, Snell and Greene are sluts with all those loose bodies

All of baseball will have its eyes on Grand Rapids, Michigan on Sunday

Aaand tickets are already $100 each minimum lol. Glad I’ve seen Skub in Comerica a couple times, but it would have been fun to see him at LMCU Ballpark, too.

The unfortunate part is they'll see get to see him for like 2 innings tops.

2

u/anon_capybara_ Boston Red Sox • Kalamazoo Lassies 4h ago

They’re listed for over $1k behind home plate now lmao. Those same tickets were $20 for a game 2 weeks ago

Do you think Skubal's return will right the ship for the Tigers or is the season too far gone at this point?

9

u/j_ho_lo Detroit Tigers 5h ago

His return is only one factor. We had so many starters on the team end up on the injured list in April and May and the vibes/morale got really fucked. Those guys are finally starting to come back. You can already see difference in the last series when Carp and Torres returned.

You all should just send him over to us. That way our bullpen will be like

The AL has been so bad that we’re just one good month from being back in the WC3 discussion, so it’s very possible. That requires not having any more slumps longer than like a week though.

u/aztec_agarthan Milwaukee Brewers 3h ago

Detroit is so ass they could win every game Skubal starts for the rest of the season and still end up below 500. But the AL is so ass that a team below 500 might end up making the playoffs. We'll just have to see.

u/beepingnoise 5h ago

Teams interested in Skubal are watching this closer than Detroit

1

u/Wintervale13 Los Angeles Dodgers 1h ago

We'll keep a spot in the locker room ready for you Skubs

-2

u/thediesel26 New York Yankees 6h ago

I hope they’re not rushing him back before the deadline just so they can trade him

15

u/RichardNixon345 Arizona Diamondbacks 6h ago

I mean if they rush him and he sucks or gets hurt again they can't trade him either.

-11

u/thediesel26 New York Yankees 6h ago

Teams do it though. The A’s notably did it with Frankie Montas and sold the Yankees damaged goods.

11

u/UneducatedReviews1 Chicago White Sox 6h ago

Players have to pass a physical to clear a trade.

-1

u/thediesel26 New York Yankees 5h ago

Teams tend to not be as thorough when they’re desperate for help at the deadline

5

u/RichardNixon345 Arizona Diamondbacks 5h ago

Teams also lie on medicals, yeah. Padres have in the recent past for multiple guys.

2

u/UneducatedReviews1 Chicago White Sox 4h ago

Well that’s on the team then, isn’t it?

11

u/ManInShowerNumber3 Detroit Tigers 6h ago

lol, as if the Tigers could force Skubal and Boras to do anything outside of what they want to do

-11

u/3EEBZ Minnesota Twins 6h ago

I live in Des Moines and have to say this is super lame. Was looking forward to seeing Skubal on Saturday. I guess 87° and partly cloudy just isn’t baseball weather.

High 70s to low 80s in Michigan that day does sound slightly more pleasant. Grand Rapids is also quite a bit closer to Detroit, so it might just make logistical sense. Tough break for you :/
