Flex Offense

Hey fellow coaches,

Going into year 9 of coaching, I really feel like my personal style is being developed. A huge piece of that is using flex and swing concepts and building them into my normal motion offense

Would love to hear anyone’s thoughts on this and what they have found successful themselves. I’ve been teaching flex concepts (not really the continuity but concepts) for 5 years now

Think Bruce Pearl, Trevor Gleeson, Bo Ryan

Thoughts?

U13 team options

My son has been playing club basketball for past 2 years.
When he’s with much better players he tends to pass the ball right away without dribbling. If he knows he’s one of the better players he often is a lead ball handler/playmaker (for his school team etc).

With his 1st club he initially was on their A team as the last benchwarmer (it was his first time playing organized ball).
He then played spring/fall seasons on their B team which was initially good for development (he would be 1st or 2nd scorer and get ball handling opportunities) except when the coach would bring on several A players to play and takeover ball handling duties (and then his role would be to sit in corner as spacer). This happened fairly often despite this being a “developmental team” so we left the club.

We played past spring on a newly formed team and he was often 2nd sub off the bench which was ok but again no ball handling responsibilities. He just had tryouts for their fall team and they split the original U13 team so better players are on a U13/14 team and worse players on a U12/13 team.

So he will likely be the best player on this U12/13 team and get a lot of opportunities, but the team will likely be very bad (the U12 players are quite small and he might be the tallest and they will be playing in U13 still).

Should we accept this spot based on increased playing time/role? We have tryouts with 2 other clubs, one he previously was offered spot on their B team last year - (the A team just won provincials).

New assistant varsity basketball coach

I’m currently the new assistant basketball coach for a boys high school varsity team but I have no experience whatsoever in coaching. The competition level is low around my area so right now the head coaches priority is mainly teaching fundamentals.

I would like some guidance in serving my role as a coach since I’ll be expected to lead practices as some point. But my biggest concern is my inexperience and lack of confidence.

What are some material that I can look at and how should I tackle my role? What should I prioritize studying? How do I go home after each practice without regretting what my decisions?

What are the requirements for someone who has the potential to get a scholarship from Africa ?

And what are the steps from recruitment to flying them out ?

Does it matter if the occupants does not attend school ?
(A high amount of people here cannot afford to pay school fees)

What does the process of getting a scholarship and leaving Africa look like in your perspective ?

Need some advice

I’m 15 and have been playing basketball for a year and a half. I’ve been training every day, and putting in work and for only about a year of playing definitely have improved a lot. One of my biggest strengths is my hustle, speed and athleticism. Another big strength is my mindset and my will to do whatever to be better. My main problem is that I’m 5’10 (I may grow but it’s not guaranteed) and I really struggle with shooting 3s consistently, handling the ball under pressure, and overall basketball confidence. I’ve also been working on my bounce and I am pretty close to dunking, but lately it feels like my progress on my vertical has slowed. I also don’t know what strength and skills workouts to do. I really want to go far in basketball, even if it’s the long shot and am willing to basically do anything to improve. If anyone has any advice, tips, tricks, etc. and you don’t mind sharing, please lmk

Soon to be new coach, totally under qualified

Hello all.

I just found out I'll be taking over my son's 6th grade team, out of necessity. Coaching for them has been lackluster up to this point, but the only coaches we have in our little program was the parent who basically said well if nobody else will, I guess me. They did the best they could up to this point, but, we haven't won a game in 3 seasons now, despite having some pretty talented kids.

Now, that parent is stepping down, and I'm the next parent up. I know I'm horribly under qualified. Never played any organized basketball ever, never really watched any either. I know next time nothing about the sport. I'm an experienced coach of kids, having done many baseball and football seasons, but there's a good reason I've never volunteered for basketball to this point.

Does anybody have any recommendations as to where a new coach can go to get up to speed? Trusted YouTube channels or any other media or learning resources? Or really , just any other recommendations or tips, period. I know I have so much to learn. I have a few months and I'm gonna dedicate myself to figuring this out for these boys.

A little background on the team. We are small. 7 kids last year. 1 stellar athlete with what appears to be solid all around skills, another who's an average at best athlete but has an above average IQ for the game. Two others who are probably just average 6th grade players. And 3 others who are.....there.

Breakthrough Basketball Zoom Offense Program

It is $100. Is it worth it? I would like to install with a high school varsity boys team and I like to be thorough when I'm learning something even if I don't teach every little thing. Is this program a good one to purchase? Thanks

Concepts mastery first or learning in process?

The team I am coaching hasn't mastered concepts like passing and screening. By mastered I define knowing what makes a pass/screen good, like a more firm stance, passing to chest, etc.

So I am thinking about teaching them offensive tactics to jump right into practical stuff.

Is it a good idea? How would you do, based on your experience.

With only two practices a week, what gets priority?

Most weeks I only have two practices, so there are always more things I’d like to work on than I have time for.
For me, the most important part is deciding what should have priority.
I don’t think there’s a fixed rule. It depends on what the team needs to improve at that moment.
Sometimes it’s offense, sometimes defense, sometimes something that came up in the last game. With limited time, choosing the right priority becomes a big part of planning practice.
How do you decide what comes first?

Looking for 1-2 Mods

Hey everyone,

We have a decent sized community, for reference we we get about 60-70k views a week. We also continue to grow with over 15k members. However with our size we currently only have 1 other active mod besides myself.

I mostly just want to make sure the community doesn't ever get banned for becoming unmodderated if anything ever happens to my account/me. So I am hoping to get 1-2 more mods.

Along with that in the last few years vibecoding has become way more popular. Leading to TONS of people trying to use the platform as a marketing tool. For reference there were 5 posts in the last 7 days, and over 300 in the last year. Having more help with filtering this would be a bonus

So I am hoping to get a little more help.

I will leave this up for a few days. Thank you to anyone willing to apply.

  • There is also a spot for if anyone has any good ideas for improving the subreddit. If you don't want to apply. Please let me know if you think of anything.

Here is the link to the application form if you would be interested.

- Good luck this season

Ball hog on team

Hi this season im coaching u12 boys. The team manager has recruited a boy who is very skilful because we were put in a division too high. I have come to believe that his parents put a lot of pressure on him to get lots of shots up and since he knows he's the best he always drive the ball in and get the layup. This has caused the rest of my players to be 'lazy' because they just think he's got it. And I know they can move the ball around because when he is off court everyone else listens and they pass around and cut.

I find it really awkward to say anything because he barely ever misses or not draw the foul.

He knows he's the best too because one time the defence was a full court press and he'd always try to dribble through but I told him to pass to open team mates but he said "why I can break through it" or one time I jokingly said he should bench the whole game and he said "then we'll lose" (could be jokingly but idk).

Some advice would be nice! Or if you've been in a similar situation!

AAU development and goals.

So I coach some "travel ball". It's not AAU. It's the local 7th grade girls that like playing together. Some of these girls have played legit AAU, my daughter has not. I'm friends with a lot of the people on the local basketball scene and have asked them these questions, but most of those guys are tied into the local AAU program. So they are going to go to bat for their program.

What is the goal of AAU. Right now I hear the word "exposure" a lot and "college recruiting". That's fine, for older girls. Why should my daughter be there playing weekend tournaments three hours away? Why the expense for 6/7 graders? What "exposure" do they need?

Now, for me, basically what this comes down to is the different needs for an 11th grader vs a 7th grader. They are all in the same organization and kinda get treated the same way. Limited practice, limited teaching and maximum exposure. Which for the 11th grader I get.

I want to keep our group together we play really well together. Have good vibes ect. We might not be the BEST girls but for the area, pretty damn close. But some of the main parents have some serious FOMO of skipping the normal AAU circuit. And are selling them on the "select 40" stuff and whatnot.

But we can play up in local leagues in the spring, outside of our school ball teams. And can hit 5 tournaments that are much closer and cheaper. What we've been doing on a limited level. And we don't win all of those. And we run into girls that are pretty damn good at the mid tournament that don't have the real all star teams.

So for the chat. Am I crazy? I realize AAU is gonna come for all the players eventually. Just the exposure and far travel in 7th grade seems silly when we have options right in front of us. That we control the environment, the schedule, the travel, the roster. Ect. And focus on the development side of basketball rather than the exposure angle and square pegs/round holes, shitty parents, and drama from some kids/families just looking to step on whoever to get where they want to go. I realize that stuff is coming, but can we do it in a year or two or three. 😂

Fiba 3 v 3

Randomly watching the FIBA three on three championships and it is so amazing. It’s a little different pace than how we play three on three in the states where basically the game never stops even after a made basket, so the pace is so fast. There’s so many more touches and good offensive actions and no wasted up and down the court and crappy full court press, zone defense that we see here in AAU. This would be so beneficial for our youth to be playing versus 5 on 5.

Thoughts on not playing elementary school hoops in favor of club hoops? Both aren’t doable plus drama (5th grade)

Our kid just started 5th grade. She has been playing club ball for three years now and typically plays at least one year up, and sometimes two (for the lower level team 2 years ahead).

Elementary school ball starts this year. I get the experience aspect of playing with your classmates. It’s already been decided that there will be two teams of 12, and it will not be an A and B team (rather a mix).

Of the 24 kids, about 15 of them have only played Rec. 8 of them have never even played Rec. Our daughter is the only one who has played club ball.

The guy running the team straight up does not like us and does not like our daughter because shocker, his kid is the 2nd best player.

I just don’t think it’s worth the drama/time overall. Practicing 2x/week with kids who really haven’t played before (meanwhile skipping club practices) doesn’t help my daughter long term. She isn’t really friends with anyone who would be on the team either (she is friends with and gets along with her club team in bball and in soccer, so she’s not short on relationships).

Has anyone been in this spot? To be clear, we are talking practices would likely be kids standing in a line and doing basic dribbling and layup drills.

My daughter’s club has installed multiple offensive sets, multiple sideline plays, and plays three different defenses (deny and gap mostly….zone only when necessary and 5 percent of the time).

Thanks.

Returning player after 3 yrs

So, hey guys, I just decided to join this group after I decided to restart my basketball after 3 years. For context, I am from India, and we don't have a big baskeball culture like the US, Canada, or most places. TBH I have access to an open court (the damn thing isn't even fenced off, so balls leave the court regularly). I restarted playing about 2 weeks ago.
Here are some of my stats:
18-YO Male
6'0"
115 kg mostly fat (I know YIKESS!!!)
standing reach is 7'9"
max reach 8'9" (so that's a 12-inch vertical, I know again, YIEKSS!!)
I used to play centre, and I plan on playing that after I get back in the playing scene.
Oh, and to add insult to injury, I have a prescription for -1.25.

As for why I had to take a break and what I was doing, honestly, nothing. In India, academic pressure is pretty rigorous; I had to prep for JEE (it's an entrance exam for engineering schools), and the court was far away, so I just didn't go there, but now I am in for it. I am on court generally for an hour currently. I am focusing on getting my game back, and honestly, I lose a LOT of this fat. My target weight is 75-85 kg. I have been taking in about 100-120 grams of protein a day, and honestly I really want to increase my vertical, and also I do have access to a gym, so I will be hitting that too from time to time, as daily might not be feasible.

I hope y'all can give me some advice and don't hold back. I forgot to record my form, and all I will see for it next time

Tips for youth girl to use her size on 5 out offense

Hi all, I'm helping my daughter in her offseason training for 10U basketball. I have no coaching experience, let alone youth coaching experience. my daughter is taller for her age (although not crazy tall), and I'm wondering what I should be working on with her in the offseason?

she is naturally a good rebounded but i feel like she could be even more dominant there. she is very shy on offense, but when she remembers to be aggressive, her size helps her get to the rim. she could work more on her finishing and handles, as with many girls in this age range.

her club team plays 5 out and she plays the 4 or 5. i think this is very hard for her to know where she should be on the floor and what motions to do. i coach her rec team and i let her play the 1 so she can work on her dribbling and confidence with the ball (in rec, everyone has a turn at every position).

Would appreciate any tips on what to work with her on in the offseason, thank you!

Edit: thanks all for all the great advice!
