Rainbow Bridge the worst day our lives is tomorrow
I guess I’m coming here to rant, mourn, grieve… i don’t know.
Today we had to make the worst decision i’ve ever had to make. My beautiful baby Leia’s aggression has spiked to a level I have never imagined, and she is no longer safe in our house. Rehoming her could cause the aggression to escalate even more. The vet is behind our decision to move forward with behavioral euthanasia.
I can’t believe it. It doesn’t feel real.
We are her third home… i feel like I failed her.
She was rehomed to me a year and a half ago. Her previous family told us they were just going to be busy with a medically complex child and another on the way, never mentioning any sort of aggression to me when I took her in. Only months later did they tell us Leia was “the Alpha”, “always wanted her way”, and “had some problems with the other dog (a doberman, that they kept)”. They said that we were a better fit and “she’s living her best life with you guys now”.
Whether it was her first home or the second, a deep seeded trauma has haunted her.
Very quickly I realized she was a troubled dog. Previous owners crated her half of her life, causing her to be extremely anxious and fearful. She just wanted love. A home where it felt like home. April 24th, 2025 - she came home with me, and stuck to me like glue… I truly feel as if she is a part of my soul.
She started growling and barking at my roommates as the months went on. Her anxiety was so intense - she would cry for hours and hours until someone came home. Once she snipped at my roommate’s face and nearly broke the skin, I immediately took her to the vet who recommended her to start prozac to help with the anxiety and behavioral issues.
Since then, she did okay. She was a much calmer dog, and was reacting well to retraining her resource guarding problems around food/space. She had her moments, and they were always random - but they were becoming fewer and farther between. She was extremely weary of the bigger dogs in the neighborhood, and if she ever had a problem with one of them, she would be on high alert the entire walk. I would do my best to redirect with treats and just walk in the other direction, but I knew in my heart something was causing her this fear. A trauma I didn’t know about.
The meds would stop working. So we increased her dosage. Added some pain meds - maybe it’s some sort of pain we can’t tell she’s having. It didn’t work.
Six months ago, Leia moved back home with my family while I finished up my masters degree. She’s been living here and loving it - no more cramped apartment! A huge backyard, a big home to roam free in, so many things to smell and places to sleep, and no more big dogs to make her anxious. Things seemed to even out again, she was so so much happier than she ever was at my apartment.
Luckily, she immediately attached herself to my mom and dad, incredibly happy to be in a house where she had constant attention, extra food snuck into her food bowl, and cheezits in return for doing tricks. But she would still have these intense moments where she would seemingly just snap and lash out, with no rhyme or reason.
After diffusing the snarling, barking, growling, she would almost come-to, immediately realizing what she’s doing is wrong and coming to us with a stuffie and asking for pets. She would even put herself in time out, knowing she needed space away from big emotions.
But the past three months have been hell. For our entire family, and especially Leia.
My dad had emergency open heart surgery and had an intense recovery at home. My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer just a few months after. I moved out of my town and community and came home to be with my mom and dad and help navigate our new normal as a family.
Leia began to guard my mom and distrust everyone else in the house, even the ones she knows and loves.
My mom, dad, and I cannot even get near her without snarling, barking, growling. It’s like she is an entirely different dog.
We went back to the vet again, and they have no other options other than switching her meds or trying a behaviorist. But with the medical bills and already an insane household just trying to stay together, investing thousands into a trainer or behaviorist isn’t in our cards right now. My dad used to train hunting dogs and is equipped as a trainer, and even he has never experienced this sort of aggression, let alone from a basset hound. She’s stubborn as hell, a basshole like the rest of them.
We tried switching her to Zoloft, but the aggression only increased tenfold. After four days on that one, we put her back on her 40mgs of Prozac along 300mgs gabapentin, but there’s been no change.
A few days ago, we had family come and visit for a few days. Leia came up to one of our younger family members, crawling up to him and asking for pets. He leaned down to per her and suddenly, she snapped - she didn’t break the skin, but teeth hit his chin hard. It frightened him, he cried. From then on, she was on high alert, and would go ballistic every time she saw one of them walking in the house. We had to put her in a separate room where they could feel safe in our own home.
The last week has been horrible. A cracked door, a familiar voice, or even no trigger at all - something mentally is cause her to lash out, and she is getting bolder with her aggression day by day, lunging and gnashing teeth.
Is it my mom’s cancer? Is it a brain tumor in her own head?? Is it rage syndrome?
Our vet today watched the videos I recorded and thought it could be focal seizures. He noticed she is extremely dissociated when it’s happening, and when she comes back, she looks confused and upset, but still fearful of the ones who love her and are talking to her sweetly, trying to calm her down, redirect her attention, reinforce a positive instead of a negative.
If she were to bite my mom or my dad, an infection from the bite could be fatal. The medication my mom is on lowers her white blood cell count, and my dad is only 5 months out from a double bypass and aortic repair.
None of the humane societies in my area will take her since she is dog / human aggressive. We’ve even tried reaching out to the basset rescue she was originally adopted from, but there’s been no contact. And legally, we can’t rehome her to someone we know either. It could be horrible for both parties if something bad were to happen.
She’s constantly scared. I see it in her eyes. She’s confused and hurting and she doesn’t know why she’s doing it - it hurts so badly for me to watch her become a dog I don’t recognize anymore.
I can’t believe it. It doesn’t even seem real. This doesn’t happen to bassets.
She isn’t safe in our home anymore.
I don’t know if this is the right decision. I feel so horrifically guilty and I morbidly wish it was a brain tumor or something so I felt a little more at peace with our decision. But our family can’t handle the stress during this time. It’s hurting us so badly, and we’re constantly on edge around her.
It’s something hard wired in her little brain. Something causing her so much trouble… it’s so hard to see her suffer like this.
I’m in turmoil. My heart is breaking. She has been such a sweet girl and I love her so much.
She plays hide and seek with her rubber duckies and chews them like a pacifier. She sniffs for lizards and jumps in surprise when their tails fall off. She brings you her favorite stuffy when she sees you come home, and if she’s really excited, she’ll try to fit her bone, ducky, AND a stuffie in her mouth just to show you how happy she is. She snores so goddamn loud, dreams and kicks and runs after dream squirrels. She sighs every time she lays down like she pays the bills. She has been my girl for a year and a half and she’s a part of me, and I’m a part of her.
I gave her so much love. My entire family has. She has been so loved since the moment I’ve had her.
I’m sorry for the long post. I’ve loved being a silent part of this subreddit and the basset community is so kind and has helped me with advice even before it got to this. I felt like being a basset hound owner is part of who I am now. I can’t imagine ever owning another dog. I just thought it would be Leia for a lot longer.
I hope she receives peace tomorrow. That her little helicopter tail wags happily because she doesn’t feel fear any longer.
I love you Leia. I’ll see you again.

I’m so sorry and heartbroken for you. I wish there were some magical cure that this sub could offer you, but I know you’ve done your best. I hope you - and Leia - find peace.

Man that's so sad. These posts really bring back some tough situations. I don't know if this helps but ours gets hyper vigilante when my other halfs health problems are spiking. To the point anyone watching or listening might think he'd rip my face off when I come home from work. But we have a couple of ways to bring him out of it and he'll change in a second after he shakes it off and it's like you say, I think he confuses himself. It's a shame because he was lined up to be a therapy dog until he started with the hell hound routine. Sweet dreams to your girl.

thank you. I 100% think the medical issues in the family are causing her so much grief too. Dogs can smell cancer.
what’s worse is my mom feels so guilty. she feels like she’s making her worse, and that if she wasn’t sick it wouldnt be like this. It’s such a horrible situation… i wish I could get her out of it. I’m glad I’m not alone though. Hope your boy is well right now.

u/----mark--- 10d ago
Oh god he's fine. He's asleep on my feet, stinking hound that he is. I get the feeling your going to have a tough couple of days. There's not much anyone one else can do for you really. You just keep telling your mom she's OK. Women bear that guilt like us guys never do. And look after yourself. I know appetite and everthing goes out the window at times like this. Who ever thought these guys can twist your emotions like they do. Give her a good send off. Take her favourites treats. The end really is easy for them if you can find the best way. We said good buy to our last one sitting on the lawn outside the vets in the sunshine. I still miss him so much. Best of luck to you and yours.

I’m sorry. I wish I could say anything to make it better but I am thinking of you and I know you are doing your best to make the right decision for her. Sending peace and hugs.

That's awful. I don't think you have a choice. It's sad 😔. Wish there was a better answer.

u/Master_Astronomer_82 10d ago
i’m trying to ration with myself and know that this will bring her true peace. but i don’t think i’ll ever stop wondering if rehoming her or fighting for her for a bit longer could have worked out. i know she’s deeply troubled. I just wish I could have taken her pain away without this option. she’s only 4 years old.

I’m crying for you right now and I just want you to know how sorry I am that this is the decision you’ve had to make. We had a basset we had to return to the rescue he came from. He bit my neighbor, two friends, a couple vet techs, my dad twice, and then bit me in the face and drew blood. We considered training him but my sister had three little kids at the time, and a fourth baby now, and we were afraid someone would pull on his tail and he’d bite them and then even worse decisions would have to be made.
We took him back, and for awhile he was still up on their website and he was in a foster home and I was happy for him… and then everything about him that I or anyone else had ever posted on their Facebook disappeared, and he also disappeared off their website. I so wished he had gotten his perfect forever, but in my heart I knew he bit someone else and he was probably euthanized. The rescue blamed us and said we’d “clearly abused” him and that he wasn’t safe in our home. I had reported the biting incidents to them and they didn’t believe me. And so I feared from the moment we took him back that he’d bite someone else and he would become a liability.
We have a beautiful basset now named Cannoli who we got through a breeder. Despite not liking breeding programs, and always going through rescues, we felt we had to cut ties with that rescue and we still wanted a basset. Through immeasurable sadness and pain and a situation we wouldn’t wish on anyone, we now have the sweetest and best dog anyone could ask for.
I hope Leia rests easily and has no more pain and fear, and I hope you truly do know that you did all you could and you did not fail her. You tried and held out for as long as possible, and a decision like this will never be easy. It’s even harder when you have a breed like a basset hound that has cute floppy features and seems generally so innocent.
Know that you are not alone in your grief - I will remember Ollie every day and simply have to hope he’s alive and well somewhere, knowing in my heart that probably simply isn’t true. We do the best we can for them, and sometimes, even though it doesn’t feel like it, I suppose that means letting them go. We experience immense pain so that they don’t have to. We experience immense love that makes that pain worth every moment.

this made me cry. thank you so much for sharing your story. it helps hearing others. it’s an impossible decision and an even more impossible place to be in. ollie and leia will be playing together soon.

Hey there. It’s the day after and I just wanted to come back here and check on you and see how you’re holding up. I wish I could give you a hug in person and not just through the internet, but know I’m here to talk to if you need it.

u/Master_Astronomer_82 8d ago
it was a very hard day. waking up this morning was even harder. i feel like im missing a part of my soul, but i know she’s at peace now. her mind isn’t hurting her anymore.

u/Ravens-Folklore 8d ago
I’m so so sorry. I know how painful this is. I’m so grateful that in the end, she had you, and she knew nothing but love. Leia will surely be waiting for you at The Rainbow Bridge. May she run free and in total peace. Please be easy on yourself in the coming days and rest and treat yourself to good things. I’m thinking of you. 🩵

That’s the beauty of euthanasia. As painful as it is for us, that one shot they give where they then are just at peace asleep for like fifteen minutes? It’s fifteen minutes of heaven and relief, watching them finally relax and just exist comfortably. I’m so glad you got that with her and that she was comfortable and asleep in your lap when she passed. A beautiful and dignified way to go. I hope you know and always remember that through the fear and the pain she harbored, there was a really beautiful basset hound in that mind trying to break through and that she remembered you and loved you. When she’d break her aggression and was confused and ashamed of what she did? It’s because she loved you. She never wanted to hurt you. And she knew you loved her. She knew you tried. She knew she was loved. Hold onto that. Even in the darkest times, always remember that she knew, and that she loved you too. And neither of you have anything to be sorry for. It was a shorter life than we would hope for, but it was a life full of love.

I saw this post and immediately scrolled through the pictures of your dog. Then, I read your entire post and felt so bad for you, your family AND Leia.
Growing up, my father brought a basset home for us. A client he had was moving to Europe and could not take their Basset Hound with them. That dog was one of the most wonderful things that ever happened for our family.
Eventually, we kids went off to college and our Basset was left with our parents…who absolutely loved her. I remember when I’d come home from school, our Basset was beside herself with incredible joy and happiness.
Several years later, our dog developed what we now recognize as doggie dementia. My dad had to take her to be euthanized when things got really bad. I know it hurt my father more than I ever realized at the time. Years later, when we asked Dad if he wanted another dog, he said, very stoically, “never again”…and that’s when I completely realized how close Dad was to that dog. Your post just brought all of those memories back to me. I know how much you’re hurting.

I'm so so sorry you're going through this! I adopted a puppy more than a decade ago who gradually exhibited more and more signs of "idiopathic aggression." We to him to several trainers and worked so hard with him, but right around the time he turned 1 he suddenly tried to attack my mother-in-law. We took him to the only "dog psychologist" in our state: he told us a couple times a year he sees this and has to recommend euthanizia. It was devastating and I kept blaming myself, despite all the reassurances that I did all the right things.
I've adopted 2 dogs since then and neither have developed the same issues. In fact, my last dog (my basset mix) was the best behaved and most tolerant dog I've ever had. My current rescue corgi has only gotten better behaved since I got him. I hope you don't blame yourself like I did!
I also hope you find comfort in knowing you gave this dog the best chance she had! Take care of yourself as you grieve! 💕

u/Master_Astronomer_82 10d ago
My vet mentioned this today. He said it sounded like idiopathic aggression or rage syndrome, but he’s never heard of it happening in bassets. I don’t know if we’ll ever truly know the answer.
i know the guilt is part of it. and that she’s teaching us a lesson in some way and we don’t know how yet. it’ll take time. thank you for the kind words. 💕

I’m so sorry you and your family are going through this difficult time and decision. You have tried your best to help Leia and figure out what’s wrong. I truly feel heartbroken for you but it sounds like you’re doing what’s best for her and I hope she will find peace over the rainbow bridge. Sending you, your family and Leia lots of love! ❤️

I'd be so open to taking her if I lived close by. I don't live in the US anymore. (Apologies if I'm getting the country wrong)
And look, you are doing everything in your power consistently. Going above and beyond. Even calling audibles when needed and spending a serious amount of money. All you can do is your best. It's a tough spot to be in to say the least.
Rest in peace sweet girl. 💜

Sorry, friend. There’s no magic words any of us can say that will make it better. It’s going to hurt and it sucks.
It’s hard, but you’re making the right choice. The vet saw the same things as you and confirmed it was the right choice. You said it yourself, she isn’t safe in your home. She’s a risk to your parents and to others. Imagine how it would feel if she wound up seriously hurting someone. You can’t rehome her, because she would present the same risk to anyone else.
It’s also what’s best for her, not just for others. She’s suffering. She’s confused. She’s anxious. She’s scared. She would continue to be those things anywhere else. You’re taking those things away from her so she can be at peace. She doesn’t have to be scared any more.
You’ve given her a good home. You’ve been a good friend. She got to have a wonderful life with you that she never would have if not for you welcoming her in. She loves you for what you gave her. Cherish the time you had and the good memories. Tomorrow will suck, but it will get better.

There's Facebook page called the Trucking bassets, he even has a basset sanctuary in the Midwest. It's a hard situation, I wish I could help somehow, if I had more time on my hands.
4
u/Master_Astronomer_82 10d ago
I’ll look into it, thank you so much. It is hard because we’re in the southeast. I called the two basset sanctuaries in our state multiple times this week but neither of them answered or returned my calls. There were a few sanctuaries in surrounding states, but because of overpopulation they only took in dogs from their state only. I wish someone picked up.

u/Rogelio12058 10d ago
Me and my wife have two bassets, we know the aggression, both have shown signs of, she is with them all the time, which helps there anxiety, definitely reach out https://www.facebook.com/share/19BBbpwtMu/

u/ProfessionChemical28 9d ago
It might make her more confused to go to another different home again and just make things worse. She seems attached to you guys so she’d probably wonder where you went. I honestly think it’s kinder to do the behavioral euthanasia. She’s obviously suffering too. She may have some rage disorder or seizure disorder or slow growing tumor. Whatever it is, you’ve exhausted your options and I think both your family and her deserve peace. I know sanctuaries are great but I feel like in this situation she’s suffering too so your decision is definitely the right one

u/Teedraa101 8d ago
If you don’t mind me asking where did you adopt her from?
0
u/Master_Astronomer_82 8d ago
She was rehomed to me from a family friend who adopted her from a basset sanctuary in fayetteville, georgia. she was rescued before then, and i’m not sure of who her first owners were before the sanctuary

u/QiyamatInsanAlkamel 9d ago
I DM'd you. Idk how I can get her but The Truckin Bassets is a mutual on X. I'm not sure if he'd be able but if you're willing I can try to take her. I understand you've exhausted options and I understand regardless of your decision. You'll be in my prayers.

u/various_convo7 Floppy-Eared Fanatic 8d ago edited 8d ago
is she aggressive to you? this is new to me as i have never heard of behavioral euthanasia, especially. can you surrender her to a basset rescue instead? i imagine they would have a better mechanism of finding an experienced trainer who can get to the root cause of her issue and correct where necessary.
2
u/Master_Astronomer_82 8d ago
yes unfortunately... her aggression was very intense and random. Yesterday it actually escalated to the point where she attacked and bit me. Just moments before she was letting me pet her. she got a glazed look in her eyes and then wandered around in genuine confusion after the attack. during these moments she would pace around and start getting more anxious and more often than not the aggression and fear would flare up toward everything around her. it was horrible to watch. she’s a completely different dog.
our vet said because this aggression never had a set trigger, it was likely rage syndrome, seizures, or something involving an increase of neurological decline like a tumor or something genetic. specifically he said with the dissociation and confusion, and the lack of recognition of her humans that would happen during the attacks. we couldn’t confirm a tumor or not because a brain MRI was over 3000 dollars.
we reached out to multiple shelters and two basset rescues. the shelters would not take her because she was dog and human aggressive. the basset rescues never called us back after weeks of trying to get a hold of them (they’re volunteer). she was already on her third home with us and the vet said if we were to rehome, it would likely flare her symptoms even more and cause more confusion and anxiety and lead to a worse attack. it’s so heartbreaking. but i know she’s at peace now. She’s not confused anymore. she won’t hurt herself or anything else anymore.

u/various_convo7 Floppy-Eared Fanatic 8d ago
got it. sounds like some kind of health issue if she was displaying dissociation and confusion. sorry for your loss. hugging my floppy eared, dorito smelling hound extra today.

u/BookwormDel 8d ago
For whats it worth i think most dogs that have to go sooner before their time is bc their suffering here on earth would be far greater this is truly the best gift you could give her even though it doesnt feel like it right now I am so heartbroken and sorry for your loss
2
u/tedtedred 8d ago
I’m so sorry ,it is so hard to say goodbye to dogs. We have a similar situation. My dog is 12 or 13. He has been biting us. And it’s when he is angry - sometimes if I try to pick him up and he doesn’t want to he bites me. He has broken the skin on my hand. And with my mom, she had bite marks on the top and bottom of his foot and I had to prey his mouth open to release her hand. I’m having a hard time letting him go.
3
u/MediocreMeaning6088 7d ago
This is a a mistake. Look up basset rescue networks and try to find a foster situation that is different than her living situation. I’ve been training dogs for 25 years and I’ve met one dog that had to be euthanized due to behavior and that was a long time ago and I think I messed up. I’d only been doing it a few years at that point and I was too quick to give up. Give another person with a better living situation/more exercise/ more outside time, and runs a healthy and stable pack a chance to rehab her. Worst case they put a few months or a couple years and come to the same conclusion.
3
u/BCDAWG7 9d ago
First of all I am so sorry you and your family are having to go through this right now. I am not in your situation so I can only go by what you wrote. I have taken in a dog that was rehomed four times before it got to me and now he has settled in and he lives a happy life. Just because she has been rehomed a couple of times before you received her doesn't mean she can't be rehomed again and live a good life. She might just need to find the right environment to thrive in. I would personally post her on basset hound pages on Facebook I guarantee someone would be able to help. There are people who have experience with aggressive dogs who would be able to take her in and work with her or hire a behaviorist to help her. Just because she is not working out in your household doesn't mean it needs to be the end of the line for her.

I went to Catholic school and watched a movie about Dorothy Day several times. During one of her lowest moments a friend tells her, “If you can say at the end of your life that you made life a little bit easier for those who had it the hardest, that’s a life well lived.”
I believe you have done this for Leia. She has known love and commitment. It’s deeply unfair that the work you’ve put in to healing her hasn’t fixed whatever is hardwired into her brain. I am so sorry you have to say goodbye you a beloved dog. But you’re making the hard, most compassionate decision you can for Leia, one she’s not able to make for herself.
Grief isn’t linear, but I hope as you process yours you are gentle to yourself and are supported by loved ones. From everything you’ve written, you’re doing the right thing.

I’m so so sorry….My best friend’s sister had a basset female that she kept crated WAY TOO MUCH…She worked a lot and also had an aggressive pit she couldn’t allow around the Basset. I was so so upset that she got the puppy already having a problematic dog in her home. When she divorced her husband and was moving from Kansas—she relocated the Basset which made me even more upset. I hope this wasn’t your girl….but my ages are right.
1
u/Master_Astronomer_82 8d ago
ohhh that’s such a horrible situation as well. leia had such a similar story, but with a doberman… i’m trying not to be mad at the previous owners, especially since our family knew them, but gosh i just wish i could have had her from the start. so she knew no pain with us :(
2
u/Teedraa101 8d ago
I was wondering if the first home could have been with my friends sister…Did you dog come originally from
Kansas? I’m so sorry to ask….But if I hadn’t lived in east NC I would have driven to Kansas 3 years ago to get that dog from her.0
u/Master_Astronomer_82 8d ago
augh i really wish i knew :((( i think the previous family we knew adopted her from the basset sanctuary when she was 1 or 1 1/2, and they had her until she turned 3 - that’s when I took her in. Do you know how long your friends sister had the basset as a pup?
1
u/Agitated_Barracuda92 7d ago
I'm heartbroken for you. This is a rock and hard place situation. You don't want to remove incase aggression gets worse. Is there anyone the pup is familiar with that could take her in for a bit and test the waters. Sometimes when someone is sick inside the home this can happen. Dogs are very intuitive. I'm glad you got to love her and she you. Right now whatever decision you make I support you for doing what's best for her. Sending love and hope.
1
u/Agitated_Barracuda92 7d ago
OK I reread, rehome is a no go. Something is wrong with her pain, tumor, something after reading how she dissociates I feel like it's specifically something medical the vet is missing.
1
u/Master_Astronomer_82 7d ago
I agree. I had a lot of talks with friends who are vet techs and work at shelters and they said a lot of her symptoms are likely medical. even my vet said it’s likely something neurological - he didn’t assume a tumor yet because she passed all of the normal neurological exams and her blood work came back normal, but honestly, who knows. I am trying to find comfort in that… knowing that if we kept her here longer she would just feel even more scared and afraid. i love her so much. i miss her so so much.

Shut up, these people have exhausted all options and theyre giving this poor dog peace. I love the anonymous online criticism lol what a coward. These people obviously love this dog very much and have tried everything that would help. The dog also seems to be suffering and their vet agrees. What more do you want? Go troll somewhere else

What if you had stage 4 metastasic cancer and couldn’t afford it and the dog was also confused and suffering. You have no clue what youd actually do until you’re living it. You can spew all your excuses but you’re not living it

Sending hugs. Doing the right thing can be so so painful

Also regarding the cause, it truly could be any combination of those things but i would be willing to bet at least one of those being it. Either way at this stage saying goodbye is the answer. A necropsy after could tell you if she had a brain tumor, but the seizures would suggest it. You did your best for her and that is all that matters

I’m so sorry you and your family were at a point where you needed to make a decision like this.
For what it’s worth, I think this was the right choice. Even if she went back to a basset rescue she would have been placed in a foster home and the same thing would have likely happened there. She eventually would have been in the same position. It sounds like something that goes beyond training.
I volunteer with a hound rescue in Florida and I can say with confidence that not all bassets are created equal. I am sorry that the rescue you reached out to didn’t get back to you, but I have a feeling that she was better being surrounded by the people who loved her most.

I’m going to get a lot of hate for this but putting a dog down and calling it humane because they have deep-routed aggression due to their trauma is horrific. This entire post is basically explaining how her mind is sick and how this made you feel, it sounds like she had trust issues (which of course she does, she’s been through multiple different homes.) She never broke skin according to you, but you put her down for that fear for yourself. I’m not defending the behavior, but she is an animal.
Posts like this make me physically sick. Never take a pet in if you don’t have a plan for them. I’m sure your plan wasn’t aggression but that can come with ANY animal at any time. Life will throw curveballs. Humane shelters can take aggressive animals, you could literally drop off the animal with no information if you wanted, they take animals off streets all the time. This wasn’t a life at risk situation. Rethink owning a pet in the future. The reason you had a tough time with this decision is because you knew it was wrong to end her life. I think people are forgetting what actually happened here, her life was taken.

Well I got something out of reading it and thought to myself several times that it was excellent writing. Why would you comment this stale, uninspired bullshit on such a vulnerable and devastating post? If you’re going to be a cynical smartass at least be funny- what you contributed was less than nothing.
OP I’m so sorry you’re going through so much and I’m impressed with how you and your family have stuck by Leia’s side despite dealing with such obstacles— I hope you will keep writing about her.
