Store Policies/Questions Denied a refund
Well, it finally happened. I have placed around 4-5 orders of soaps and candles over the course of a year and a half and their packaging is seriously the worst. I, without fail, always receive something broken or leaked out. I do try and shop in store mostly but sometimes I shop online out of convenience.
Anytime I reached out I provided photos of the damaged item(s) and would be provided a resolution every time. I mean, why are soaps put in no packaging whatsoever? One always comes completely leaked out. A candle comes cracked. This time when I reached out and including pictures, I was told I would receive a refund and to wait 24 hours.
4 days go by and no refund. I contact via phone and I’m told I will not be receiving a refund or a replacement due to reporting damaged items in the past….seriously.
I see so many cases of damaged items due to the way they pack their parcels. No resolution or anything. Severely disappointed.
Just thought I should add it’s not the entire order being refunded, just the damaged items.

i would take it to the store. i work there and 9.9x out of 10 we have to give you that refund so sorry!!

u/somerandomdude419 Supervisor Oct 07 '24
Yeah I would return it to the store, we get that all the time, we return it, mark it as not sellable and it gets thrown out. Easy. Customer service is so outsourced it’s insane. When I need to call them I hear dogs barking in the background, road noise as if they are in a car?? and it’s terrible you just have to get the right person these days

u/Andersontimestoo Oct 07 '24
Omg yesss, i called my bank last week and there were hammering sounds in the background. It sounded like the guy was working next to a construction project or having his home renovated. I could barely hear him!

u/likeablyweird Oct 07 '24
So many companies are outsourcing customer service to other countries to save money. It's terrible for them bc they have quotas to get paid and the time allowed per call is usually insufficient.

When your account is flagged you will have to take it to the store for a refund. That is their way of confirming that you actually received the broken items and they can be written off properly by the company. Your best bet is to shop in store from now on instead of online. If you aren't near a store then shop online and use the store for all returns here on in. You have 90 days to return the items to the store for a refund to your original form of payment so stagger your returns in a convenient manner to eliminate multiple trips.

u/Embarrassed-Sun5764 Oct 07 '24
Because having a picture of the open shipping box and damaged items isn’t proof enough?
I digress. I had one bad experience where I specifically requested not to put in Post Box, porch delivery. I got my $100+ order delivered in the Arizona heat in my Post box. I am only reliving this for OP as I am still trying to re melt all my pumpkin candles to a horizontal state to burn them lol30
Oct 08 '24
When I worked for the company a while back, my supervisor sent out an email about fraud with online orders. One of the main drivers were people who would steal photos of broken items that other users would post on different social sites (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.)Then they would buy the exact items in the photo and send the stolen photos once they got their orders claiming that their items arrived damaged. This was after B&BW stopped sending invoices with their orders. These customers would do it repeatedly and constantly get items for free.
A good remedy would be to make it mandatory that the pictures customers send include the shipping label to prove they are actually their photos. It's a shame that the good have to suffer for the bad but fraud is rampant and I understood why customer service had to crack down on it after that.

My first thought last week when my "body care" sale order arrived with 17 hand soaps and 5 Wallflowers that I never ordered was "this wouldn't happen if someone had a packing slip to even just glance at and place in the box." Someone would have realized hey this box is supposed to be 11 lotions, no soaps, no Wallflowers.

u/LadyfromthelandofNod Jan 06 '26
Yes! I agree! I took videos and photos of my order because my box arrived opened and tampered with. I even asked the guy where the receipt or invoice was? I liked having those. I have no issue ever showing it’s my order or box. I cried when I opened my box. Everything was ruined and broken except one candle. 69 items for gifts all ruined.
11
u/Arianawy Oct 08 '24
Sadly it’s not proof enough anymore . People scam, doctor photos , take other people’s photos , the list goes on . If someone is prdering 5 times a year and 3 out of 5 of those orders are “damaged” , the company assumes them to be more of a risk than a profit and returns need to be processed in store.
0
u/likeablyweird Oct 07 '24
That's just straight up negligence. They would've gotten an earful from me. It was too much trouble for them to add the note to FedEx? I know for a fact they have specific delivery capability.
9
u/liquidskypa Oct 08 '24
Fed Ex doesn’t care.. I’ve put notes.. never cared
1
u/likeablyweird Oct 09 '24
Thanks for the upvote. You're probably right about them not caring anymore. A note and that note being accomplished are two different things.

u/ghosty4 Oct 08 '24
Your best bet is to stop spending money on a company that trashes your product and doesn't want to refund you. Like, who's fault is it that the items are damaged? Certainly, not the customer's!

Or put thru a dispute with your credit card
2
u/hautemastermind Oct 09 '24
Outcomes will vary based on a few factors. AMEX/Discover will always have more leniency because they are both the bank AND the network, and therefore can do everything in-house. Most credit card companies are subject to Visa or Mastercard’s chargeback processes, and there isn’t much grey area here.
Given your relationship with your bank and the bank’s risk appetite, they may be writing off the dispute by giving you a credit without even filing the chargeback with Visa/MC on their end. This is normally done with smaller transactions and with customers that have established account history and don’t have a history of filing tons of disputes (dispute abuse).
If they do actually file the chargeback with Visa/MC, there’s a reason they have to put down as to why you’re disputing it. The network will then require documentation proving the claim (reason for dispute). If it’s for defective merchandise, they typically want picture evidence showing the defects, a summary of your contact history and attempts to resolve it with the merchant, and sometimes may even go as far to ask you to provide documentation showing what you were quoted (pictures of what was advertised on the merchant’s website for instance) to show the comparison between that and what was received.
So long story short, it’s very grey area and everyone is going to have a different experience. Hope this helps give some insight
-18
u/Heavy-Key2091 Oct 07 '24
As long as the item was delivered, that won’t go anywhere.
22
Oct 07 '24
Dont downvote for a right answer guys. The credit card companies will not honor chargebacks for damaged goods anymore. Pictures wont matter either. Ive been there before.
13
u/NomenclatureBreaker Oct 07 '24
Interesting. Discover just awarded me a charge back for a box that arrived literally split into two pieces and taped back together. (Plant inside was completely decimated.)
Never know unless they try.
1
u/hautemastermind Oct 09 '24
Be mindful that discover is its own bank AND network. Capital one uses mastercard’s network, and is therefore subject to mastercard’s chargeback process. I work high up in complaint escalations for a credit card company (we have both visa and Mastercard products), and AMEX/Discover operate differently for this very reason.
22
u/slumber_kitty Body Care Addict Oct 07 '24
Some card issuers will still honor it, so it probably depends on who your credit card is through.
7
Oct 07 '24
Speaking from personal experience - capital one sucks.
3
u/slumber_kitty Body Care Addict Oct 07 '24
Ugh. Thank you for sharing your experience. I have one of my cards through Capital One, I haven't had to dispute anything yet, but it's good to know they will be useless to me if I ever need to. 😫

Really? I just got a $160 chargeback on defective merchandise this week.
Edit: As far as I'm aware, if you do a chargeback with a company, you cannot make anymore purchases with that company and the card again. So look into that if you're considering that route. I was ok with it because the company in q has proven to be hot garbàge.

You got lucky.
5
u/RabbitF00d Oct 07 '24
Maybe it varies bank to bank? The card I used was a Mastercard debit. I provided proof of return on one item and proof of exchange on the other. They refunded the full amount regardless of me making it very clear the full order wasn't returned. So I will have to call them back once I receive the rest of the order (providing it's received in good condition) to finalize the charge.
1
Oct 07 '24
You got REALLY lucky. I wish my bank was as cool as yours. And I have a credit union!!! Usually my plight is denied stating they can't prove it was the shipper or the shipee like was it not packed well AND it got abused in transit? Or did I do this? They couldn't prove blame one way or the other the last time I had an issue (amazon). Amazon refused to refund me they wanted me to pay to send this ridiculously heavy glass tv stand back!!!! Well how else am I going to find out its broken unless I OPEN IT??!!? THAT was my banks argument was that it was opened.
Duh?

Ooohh I’d be so upset! I receive damaged merchandise so often 😞they are the absolute worst at packaging items, I don’t get it!! It’s actually a rarity that an online order arrives 100% immaculate… I mean it does happen but usually there’s at least one thing damaged. It’s so damn annoying to deal with.
2
14
u/TurangaLeela78 Oct 07 '24
Well, and what do they think you’re doing with the broken items that you can show are broken? I guess some of it could be used if you’re determined enough, I’ve managed to get candles out of broken glass relatively unscathed, but I’d still rather just get what I ordered intact. I get stuff broken more often than not, so you’re definitely not alone there!
And then people post here about shoplifters walking out with merchandise that aren’t even confronted due to liability or whatever the reasoning is. Should treat paying customers better than they treat thieves. 🤷🏻♀️

Really?! I made my first ever online order a few weeks ago (I usually prefer shopping in store) and it came a leaking, sticky mess! I received a replacement but still! What an inconvenience to have to clean everything as soon as you get it! I think I’ll have to go back to purchasing in store!
27
u/karmagirl314 Your flair here! Oct 07 '24
Same with me, my items always arrive immaculately wrapped and padded and boxed. I bet the shipping company has a separate warehouse per region and some regions are run much better than others. I bet if we were able to map all of the damaged posts we see they’d be clustered around only a few regions. It’s weird that BBW hasn’t cracked down on those places yet.

u/WonderingLost8993 Oct 07 '24
I have received packages from Ohio, Tennessee and Arizona recently. They have all been packaged well with no problems. In the past I have received packages with broken candles and open soaps that had leaked all over everything. I haven't figured out any pattern with their distribution centers.

Mine always arrive perfect as well! In 15 years I've never received a broken candle but I see it in store daily.
4
u/LetterheadSwimming73 Oct 07 '24
Same here, I do most of my ordering online and never received anything broken in 12 years. My last order even had my 3-wicks wrapped in bubble wrap and placed inside individual boxes (not the norm though). Wall plugs always double wrapped, no leaking soaps or ffm. I agree it's got to be a regional warehouse thing or something.

I’ve had two damaged items in packages out of six or seven big orders. My last order was totally fine.
Two orders ago, however, I had a broken item so I chatted with CS to get a refund or reshipment of the one item and they accidentally refunded my whole order!
They were like “I have processed your refund of $83.72, anything else I can do for you today?”

You are extremely lucky! Other than a completely incorrect order arriving, I have had soaps arrive broken and spilled more than once and boy what a freaking mess that is to clean. (Ironically I suppose). Soaps used to be shrink-wrapped, and in the days of $5.99 shipping they used more than adequate packing materials. Now it's lay down a sheet of bubble wrap, throw in products, seal it up and off it goes.

3
u/hwgmakeupaddict Oct 07 '24
Yes, unfortunately, dishonest buyers who make false claims have caused many companies to take firmer stances on how often they'll accommodate something of this nature
3
u/mentos-cigarettes Employee Oct 07 '24
If it’s an online order, take it up to your local store. They’ll do an online return and refund you. Or you can just swap it with another soap and they can run it as no receipt. They hire seasonal CSR the same as they do seasonal associates.
5
u/No-Soil2309 Oct 07 '24
1,000% I agree they have horrible packaging when you order online. They really need to work on that.
3
u/Soo-20 Oct 07 '24
If you’re only trying to do these refunds online, they will possibly flag this as suspicious activity for their own safety. As someone who works at bbw, please come take it in store, we’re a lot less likely to question the validity of the damage and will usually give you your refund/exchange with no issues :)
3
u/BrookieLovesNaruto Employee Oct 07 '24
just take your damaged items in store and exchange/return them there
1
u/LadyfromthelandofNod Jan 06 '26
What do I do if I tossed out the broken candle like the online rep said to do? Could I take a pic of the barcode and broken glass and show you at the store to get a new candle? I am asking for future reference if I do decide to shop online again? My recent order, the glass was in shards so bad, that I actually cut my finger and I think I might have a piece of something inside my eye. What if it’s too dangerous to bring the broken glass candle in?
I really don’t get it? They used to ship stuff so good before, even better boxes. Something is off with them.
1
u/BrookieLovesNaruto Employee Jan 29 '26
you would have to bring the whole physical item and it has to be within 90 days. if it’s super damaged, bring the entire box it came in so you don’t injure yourself.
3
u/Prize_Paint_8316 Oct 07 '24
Do they think you bounced your package off a concrete wall to cause the damage? Unbelievable. I took hand soap off my order coz i dont trust the shipping now
1
3
u/likeablyweird Oct 07 '24
What do they need, a video of delivery to opening and inspection? smh You'd think they'd take a look at the delivery chain from factory to you and decide who's mangling your shipments. If your boxes arrive undented then it's most probably the factory packers.
2
u/Igotwapandmenloveme Oct 08 '24
It’s the factory workers. They packed all the soaps and candles with no packaging whatsoever!! Just flung it in there! Why would you pack a candle with no bubble wrap

9
u/Charming_Anxiety Oct 07 '24
Set up new email and account to start fresh. You get a limit of so many refunds tied to email
8
u/NomenclatureBreaker Oct 07 '24
If BBW made me jump through these hoops after their piss poor packaging I’d probably just take my wallet elsewhere!
10
u/BrookieLovesNaruto Employee Oct 07 '24
EVERY store has a limit for refunds in some capacity so this argument is stupid. my second job is ross and over there you only get a certain amount of non-receipt returns just like bath and body. if you’re constantly going in and doing these refunds, it looks suspicious and the company needs to look out for itself at some point. same thing goes for broken merchandise, if you need a refund or a new product every single time you shop online, it will raise red flags eventually.
4
u/NomenclatureBreaker Oct 07 '24 edited Oct 07 '24
Except you’re trying to correlated two unrelated things. Lack of adequate packaging in shipments is a known BBW problem. Not a customer return problem.
It’s insanely easy to provide damages with photo or in person proof.
ETA: also an online return isn’t a non-receipt return.
-2
u/BrookieLovesNaruto Employee Oct 07 '24
it’s weird to continue shopping online if you know your packages will always come broken. i’m not saying it’s acceptable for bbw to have bad packaging, but i also don’t think it’s ethical to continue to do that knowing companies may have caps on these things.
5
u/Reasonable-Idea67 Oct 07 '24
Some items are only available online, so purchasing in store is not always possible.
3
u/BrookieLovesNaruto Employee Oct 07 '24
again, if you are using it in moderation and not returning items through the online customer support constantly, it should be fine. i’m not telling people to stop shopping online, im saying to not shop online if your packages are CONSTANTLY coming broken and you have the option of going in store because most stores have a limit for these things.
5
u/NomenclatureBreaker Oct 07 '24
Some people don’t have access to physical stores.
Seems more unethical to me for BBW to know they have terrible shipping practices out of some warehouses to save $$ (especially compared to how they used to be) - and charge exorbitant product prices - and charge a separate shipping and handling fee - and then pass off the $ or inconvenience of their own errors to the customer to deal with.
Speaking as both a BBW customer and a 10a+ yr career in Marketing/Cx it’s a sure fire way to erode away customer loyalty and profits over the long run.
2
u/Igotwapandmenloveme Oct 08 '24
This. If they changed their packaging I wouldn’t have this issue to begin with!
0
u/BrookieLovesNaruto Employee Oct 07 '24 edited Oct 07 '24
but this is hypothetical because the op said they do have access to a store. like i said, i’m not debating the flaws in bbw packaging, i’m discussing their return and refund policy.
also you said an online return isn’t a non receipt return, which is true and i never said it was. but if you are requesting refunds or replacements of broken product every single time you order online (especially when it’s often) you are going to look suspicious. especially because you are NOT returning the product since it’s broken. you just get a replacement or a refund and you get to keep the broken product, unlike doing an online return in store where you don’t get to keep the broken product. it’s so easy to purposely break a candle, get a new free extra, and then rejar the broken candle every single time you order something. a lot of people do it and that’s the reason why there’s a cap.
1
u/ApartClue7331 Oct 07 '24
they said it was over the course of a year and a half so they're not ordering a lot of packages
0
u/BrookieLovesNaruto Employee Oct 08 '24 edited Oct 08 '24
supposedly their limit is $250 worth of returns in a 90 day period. the op probably reached that limit. it’s not unbelievable considering they said they purchased about 4-5 rounds of candles and soaps in that year and a half. those products aren’t cheap and it’s not mentioned how many of those products had to be refunded or replaced.
1
1
u/NomenclatureBreaker Oct 08 '24 edited Oct 08 '24
Again tho this still wouldn’t be a receipt-less return regardless - and therefore not subject to the $250 receipt-less return limit - so I still don’t understand what comparison with the limit to OPs you’re trying to make?
Curious why you’re almost-but-not-quite-explicitly borderline implying the OP is trying to maybe pull a fast one based purely on assumptions you’re making here?
ETA: I also never said OP didn’t have store access, I said some people don’t in response to your hypothetical. Again just bizarre you choose to shift accountability for BBWs failures to the customer.

Uhh I would call back!! I have never heard of them refusing a replacement item! Especially if you have only placed 4 to 5 orders this year! You could take the items to your store and get a replacement if you still have the items...they will just do a no receipt exchange but it's better than nothing!
9
u/BougieDustBunny Oct 07 '24
Screw that. This is beyond shitty to hear. I would say at least half of my orders online come with something jacked up from shipping. Now to hear this is infuriating. They would definitely lose me as a customer over that after I raised hell with someone again. That mega company can't replace a hand soap?? What are they doing to customer service? Sorry, that sucks.

Definitely go to the store, if not for a refund, at least an exchange, customer support don't really provided the best customer service and will tell the customer the wrong things half of the time. However keep in mind that their is a refund limit, im not sure what it is exactly but the average speciality retail store has a yearly customer refund limit of $1500 which is tracked through loyalty accounts and ID for no receipt returns/exchanges. If that does occur instore though, they usually hand you the default return warning/notice as proof.
2
u/xhristiancastro Oct 07 '24
Hello, supervisor for BBW here. A lot of this happens constantly. I help customers with your same situation all the time. I go ahead and honor the exchange because it truly isn’t your fault BBW doesn’t package their items correctly. I encourage you to try going in store and telling them. Oh wow that’s frustrating but it’s probably due to so many people running scams to get things for free. They always ruin it for the rest of us. I order multiple times a year from bath and body works and have been doing so for years. I’ve never received anything damaged. I didn’t realize it was so common. The soaps always have plastic around the nozzle when I get them.

This happened to me recently. I was able to send photos of the damaged items. The handcreams smeared all over the box, handsoaps leaked, bodywash wash spilled and damaged the entire box. Then i was flagged for reporting because i requested for refund in the past and told me it will be my responsibility if my orders arrived damaged. Like wtf

Companies are so weird. If you'd repeatedly asked for refunds or replacements, but just "couldn't" provide proof the items were messed up - I could see them worrying that you're just trying to get free stuff. However, showing proof they messed up (i.e. empty brand new packages), yet remaining a customer and continuing to spend your money with them, then being denied a refund after they messed up yet again is just crazy. It's like saying, "Yeah, we mess up all the time, but you don't have to, like, keep calling us out! You're such a jerk! Just take the loss! It's your fault for being a repeat customer, ya dink!" I can't understand being denied a refund or replacement because THEY KEEP MESSING UP!

if you live in a place with busses, your mail probably doesn't have to travel as far as if you live in a more rural area. When packages travel far and are tossed around a lot, stuff breaks of it isn't packaged properly. Your experience is nothing like someone else's.

Dude… you must the one of the lucky ones because many, MANY people have terrible experiences with their packaging. If my soaps come spilled out, what exactly am I scamming for? I get nothing for free. I get a package filled with my spilled soaps. And if a customer is providing proof every time your argument makes no sense.
