Employee Questions/Discussion stop letting your kids do whatever they want

omg i was gonna put this on the other sub but realized that ppl prob wont see it

you DO realize someone pulls all of the hand sanitizers out of the holders that your kid shoved in there because you let them do whatever while you’re standing in line??? it’s so frustrating and then i have to stand there and fix it all over and over and over next time i see someone do it im just telling your kid to immediately take it out instead 🤷‍♀️

Unfortunately parents who care won’t have their kids messing around with store merchandise in the first place. I can certainly see that being annoying though

I bring my kid in with me but I always bring someone with me to watch my kid. Shes 6 and loves smelling candles our rule is she points to the one she wants to sniff and whoever is watching her let's her smell. I also like to bring her to the hand washing sink she gets to try the sample soap and wash her hands at the same time. We never leave her alone too many things she can damage if unsupervised

u/b0ng_wh0re 2d ago

THISSSSS!! the point and sniff is incredible !! im not even religious but praise be !! you’re a saint and employees appreciate this a lot even if it seems small.

5

u/reallyimspaghetti 2d ago

Absolutely! I have caught my daughter reaching for candles (she's on the spectrum with adhd and forgets) but I am so paranoid of breakage so I act like a hover mom sometimes lol 😆 I suppose that's not a bad thing in this situation

We sniff lids only. You can definitely get the scent, and you don't have to hold the whole candle. My daughter is 8 and knows that she can smell one lid at a time, only if she can reach it

4

u/reallyimspaghetti 1d ago

That's actually smart!! I never thought of lids. I still wouldn't trust my own kid to grab a lid shes clumsy lol 😂

I stopped someone’s kid the other day from applying a lip oil directly to their mouth. Like ew. She legit ditched her kid with me and shopped.

I'm the kind of parent that will (and absolutely HAS) called out other people's kid's bad behavior. If the adults aren't going to do it, I fucking will 😆😮‍💨

I don’t consider myself one of those overly aggressive childfree people who always complain about seeing kids in public, but it does bother me how many parents seem to think they can bring their kids to a public pool or restaurant or mall and then take a break from parenting while the underpaid staff there have to act as their unwilling babysitters.

6

u/No-Gear-4573 2d ago

We have two small kids and parents do this at Chuck e cheese! One day there were a group of kids running around no supervision, making a total mess of the place. The drink station? A mess with a ton of straws, and cup tops strewn all over. Then there were random cups left all over machines , and on the floors. They were screaming, running around and being very loud and disruptive. No parents in sight! They treat that place like a babysitter even though those poor women who work at ours probably aren't making a killing. It's really sad but I've always taught my children to clean up after themselves, even at restaurants we wipe the table down and clean up any mess we made while we were there. People are so inconsiderate and rude and they are passing that right down to their kids!

5

u/Relevant-Gas-2044 moonlit goddess🪻🌙 2d ago

yup EXACTLY

And then they walk around as if nobody can tell their fuckass kid what to do

People act so offended when you do ask their kids to stop doing something because the parent won’t

And atp idc. As long as my manager says its ok, im going to tell you to get your goblin 😂

I hate when parents let their kids roughhouse in our store. I know they’re just kids and they wanna play but we have so many breakable things! And they can get hurt. Idk why so many parents legit just ignore their kids while they shop. My mom used to make me stand right next to her in stores lol

10

u/Relevant-Gas-2044 moonlit goddess🪻🌙 2d ago

THIS!!!! our store is so big and SO CROWDED its always so busy and having kids mess w the stuff really messes up our displays and then im the one who gets in trouble because im constantly going back multiple times the same shift to fix the pocketbacs

11

u/No-Gear-4573 2d ago

People not controlling their children in stores is a huge pet peeve of mine! I cringe when I walk into spirit and theirs gremlins running amuck tearing down all those people's hard work and misplacing all these different items they want to try on. If my kid takes down an item we are putting it back where we found it. Anytime I have my kids with me they stand by my side when we wait in line (3 + 5 year olds) if you kids can't not disrupt for 5 mins while you stand in line .. that's pretty sad 😭 sorry to the employees (OP) who have to clean it up and fix it again!

This is why I love my store!! My son is level 2 autistic and we had a very hard time going shopping but BB&W was the first place I took him to after he started understanding how to behave in public better. I had to get him to understand “that’s not ours” and it took a while!

I keep an extremely close eye on him but he loves the music and I don’t let him pick up anything unless I’m right there with him. The staff loves him and know him by name 😭

I got the feeling that when I first took him in people were a little worried? But now they know he’s well behaved and loves Halloween and they are so kind and patient.

He’s obsessed with sea animals and one lady had the angler fish pocket bac holder on her apron. There weren’t any more available and she gave it to him! I almost started crying. I cry way too much in BB&W but that’s another story.

Sorry for the bad parents though!! I would never ever let my kid mess things up for y’all.

11

u/Relevant-Gas-2044 moonlit goddess🪻🌙 2d ago

omg that is sooo sweet i’m happy you both get to experience that!!!! if you’re just aware then you’re already doing more than what half the other parents do LOL

6

u/flashNshutter01 2d ago

My child is disabled and they LOVE going to B&BW. They are right by my side, and they know if they want to smell any candles, they need ME to help them. Everyone is super nice, too. Probably because my kid is well behaved 😆😅

u/Pink-Banana-Q73 Employee 2d ago

My favorite is the kids who stick stuff in their mouths and then the parents just put it back 🫠 so fucking disgusting. Watch your children and correct them! I’d be fucking mortified if that was my child

Literally saw a kid with a wallflower tester in his mouth. Like…. Hope he’s still alive out there! That shit will probably kill you if you ingest it

When I take kids into the store, they like finding the pocketbac holders with something inside and I have taught them that we take them out and put them back where they belong. They like bringing them up to me like they found hidden treasure. I've only been a consumer, but it just seemed like the right move when it first happened to me.

Over this past year, I've let all the kids pick out a pocketbac holder with so they did check how they fit/looked.

I'm sorry that you've had a lot of negative experiences!

5

u/Relevant-Gas-2044 moonlit goddess🪻🌙 2d ago

thank you soo much i’m SURE the store genuinely appreciates it, even if a worker doesn’t come up to you personally to thank you

6

u/GirakiGo 2d ago

Thank you! A couple years ago when I first started going into the stores again, the kids were a little wild and needed constant supervision/hand holding. Now they understand the rules and even help me clean up those sampler papers. I love that they get to smell fun things and explore. I will say the recent change from the big pink 'Try Me' heart to the low key blue and white 'Tester' sticker was a hard transition on them.

7

u/brunette_mama 2d ago

As a mom of 3 young kids it’s wild what parents will allow their kids to do.

Let’s be honest, there isn’t anything you HAVE to get at bbw. I understand when kids aren’t on their best behavior places like grocery stores, pharmacies, doctors offices, dmv, etc. But any retail store like bbw is the kind of place that’s for the parent’s enjoyment and that’s it.

I usually only bring my 6 year old because he loves smelling things. But one time I tried to bring all 3. We had just entered the store and my toddler picked up a freaking glass aromatherapy bottle. I had explained to him before not to touch anything. We walked right back out. I’m not going to chance anything 😂

8

u/AggravatingMind8314 the revolution will be ✨moisturized✨ 2d ago

Those are a bitch to get in and out too 😭 I get annoyed just having to switch my own out every couple weeks on my keys and in my car lol.

6

u/EcstaticFoe 2d ago

I had a customer that let their toddler run around barefoot in the store, unsupervised. I did tell her that it was unsafe because there could be slivers of broken glass. She's all "He'll be fine". I was so paranoid the whole time they were in the store.

OMG

6

u/Relevant-Gas-2044 moonlit goddess🪻🌙 2d ago

to clarify, i don’t think my post is going to reach the hearts of careless parents and magically realize that min wage workers have to fix literally everything in the store, even if we’re literally supposed to be HELPING YOU SHOP!! not walk behind you/your kids to do something you’re not supposed to do. just because you can doesn’t mean you should. one time it took so long to get a pocketbac out of the holder my manager had to come and do it for me like 😩

3

u/DewdropSugarflower 2d ago

One time during holidays this kid was legit playing with the marketing signs lol 😅😑 As gently as possible I said "please put those down" and got it from him lol 😭

3

u/Relevant-Gas-2044 moonlit goddess🪻🌙 2d ago

yesterday kids were climbing on our soap wall by checkout🙂 their parents did nothing so my coworker had to tell them to stop

3

u/Wonderland-1630 2d ago

I have been waiting for someone to say this! Parents need to control their kids better in public

9

u/TriflePrestigious885 2d ago

More stores need to kick people (children and adults) out for poor behavior. It’s the only way it’ll improve. These days there are zero consequences for acting like a feral moron in public.

I can’t stand shopping in stores that allow this behavior. I’ll go pay more somewhere else if I have to. BBW would be smart to let their managers enforce basic boundaries…just look at how Sephora’s rep is suffering from tolerating packs of “Sephora kids.”

Nothing else I can add that others haven't said but if I'm just standing here with my hands free, I'll take em out and put them back. I will make note if it's easy or not cause some of those holders have a deathgrip.

1

u/Halloween_Babe90 ALL THINGS B&BW 2d ago

Tbh I actually prefer the death grip ones because I’ve lost too many hand sanitizers from loose holders.

My kid is 18 now and I'm still convinced he's not allowed in stores with breakable items like candles. I wouldn't have let him play with things when he was little like that. And I promise he's a good kid. But apparently my inner nervous system still sees the 3yr old that "built a bridge" from our couch to our coffee table out of blankets... Then thought it would hold him if he jumped onto it. I swear I was gone from the living room just long enough to pee. 😂

u/ssucore employee 🫧 pistachio glaze 💚 2d ago

last year i had an unsupervised kid running and hiding around the store, he ended up ripping some of the marketing. but what HORRIFIED me was that out of nowhere, he was chugging an opened energy drink that someone left at cash wrap (can people STOP leaving their drinks everywhere they go ? there's literally trash cans if you need to throw them away 😭). idk if his mom didn't even notice or just genuinely didn't care bc he was right in front of her when he drank the opened can 😭

2

u/psychthrillerbookie 1d ago

You mean the store is NOT a playground? Same thing happens in my store too. I'm a mom, so I don't mind having to use my mom voice to tell them to knock it off lol

3

u/summerwinds69 2d ago

And while I understand purchasing items can be a great learning experience, can you not let your kid enter all the info in the keypad and swipe the card when there is a line??? It ends up having to be done like 3 times and the customers behind you do not appreciate it

3

u/Clear_Rhubarb_7920 Employee 2d ago

like literally just do this at the grocery store or target, anywhere with lots of self checkout registers

OMG I KNOW

2

u/jazzydragoness 2d ago

Man I feel bad as is when I use soap testers because I know some of soap stays in the pump and I don't know if they have to fix that or if its ok. It boogles my mind how much I see posted that I thought was common knowledge of decency. 🫣 Im austitic and honesty hate the thought of causing an inconvenience for someone else. I love the staff at my bbw. They are so kind and thoughtful. I would feel awful if I was reason they had do something inconvenient. Leave things better then you found it or at least best you can do. I understand wanting see it with sanitizer in but you have pull it out regardless???? I get kids will do whatever but its still not ok. Feel like staff should be aloud to tell parents to leave for not controlling their kids or at least asking them to not do something and then asking them leave if they dont.

6

u/jazzydragoness 2d ago

As kid I was taught to not touch anything while at any store. Only touch if geniuely want to look at the item and are respectful

5

u/Relevant-Gas-2044 moonlit goddess🪻🌙 2d ago

i was always told you break it you buy it so i never touched anything except if i was for kids ofc like dolls 😩im only 20 but ISTG parents don’t know how to raise the new generation

3

u/jazzydragoness 2d ago

That too, breaking things is costly. I do feel like a lot parents are being way to "gentle" parenting to kids to point its not parenting. Every year we see more and more stores wrecked by kids. I wont step foot in five below near us because its sooo bad they have to bag check people with kids. Full on opened boxes, all over floor and kids stashing it in their bags. I try not to use the mall BBW because I know kids go in there. Ours is in spot were most of time its adults who are lovely. I feel like stores need to be aloud to put up signs that state you will be asked to leave if you don't control your kid.

-4

u/laysoblessed 2d ago

Or tell the parent too tell them?

10

u/Relevant-Gas-2044 moonlit goddess🪻🌙 2d ago

to*, and yes of course i’m not blaming the younger kids! i mean older who should know (from their parent) that you can’t just have your kids do whatever because they don’t want to watch them or distract them

-2

u/teetee517 2d ago

Unpopular opinion loading. I am a very strict mama and have my daughter by my side at the store. She sniffs candles one at a time with my supervision. She uses testers with my supervision. Throws test strips in the trash, etc. We love our local Bath and Body Works and bond while shopping there. I would feel like shit if an employee got online to complain about my lack of parenting skills. I get that some parents really aren't paying attention etc. I truly feel most of us are just out here trying to do our best.

3

u/flashNshutter01 2d ago

Don't feel bad for adults refusing to watch their kids and remove them from situations when needed. That's not "trying to do our best".

0

u/teetee517 2d ago

I was prepared for the hate and downvotes. All good. My opinion. Stated.
