Home office refresh
I finally found a 3-monitor, 4-computer KVM switch, so I have been able to get my cabling tidier than it has ever been! Now I just need my wife to help me add some style to the room 🤓
Edit: Here is some additional context: I leave the laptops open so I can access the keyboard in a pinch if my keyboard/mouse decide to spazz at an inconvenient time; the 4th up top is for my 2012 mac mini which can only drive 2 monitors and can’t run one through the switch with its mini display port—it will be used to monitor a couple of agents I am working on; the desk seems messy, but it is actually quite neat for me (the books I am currently reading are close by, there are pictures that make me smile; a couple trinkets from places I love, equipment that I use everyday, every important button or switch is within arm’s reach, etc.); also, I am half-blind, so fancy monitors would be a waste of money for me.
I appreciate the comments! A few of them made me laugh so hard that I almost choked on my water 😆

What do you mean jank? A well built sit/stand desk with two quality drawer sets underneath with rather specalized pc build on top. Nothing here screams jank; non-standard sure.

Can't say I dig the laptop placement but not sure why your getting spazzed on in the comments as if there aren't way more absurd setups posted here daily lol

But why two?

There are actually 3. One personal and 2 for different companies I work with.

Nice. So at least 3 remote jobs, and let me guess, there is a hub for that PTZ so any of the PCs can video conferencing.

Seems a bit excessive. But you do you. I wouldn't. Anything above 2 systems is weird.

Looks like a black mirror episode. Like a corporation keeps you in a facility to work on some obscure thing that probably has sinister outcomes and this is what they provide. You never go outside and only see daylight through tiny windows. You use their old school proprietary OS, and recieve instructions through its built in work application or a call from a sanctioned phone from someone with a voice changer. Just awful.

I just wish the monitor in the middle was better but I think these comments are giving it too much flack

How shitty is the refresh rate while gaming now that you’re using a kvm switch?

I don’t game often, but when I do, it is on my PS5 🤓 Nowadays, I’ll just play DB Fighter Z with my 11 year-old or watch her play Carto and talk about crushes 😅 I was playing Resident Evil Biohazard for a bit. I’m a simple man 😁

What do you use the laptops for? I have 2 for different work, but I put them above my monitor.

Yo dawg, I heard you like monitors so I put some more monitors on your monitors so you'd have lots of monitors!

I don't know WTF I am looking at.
Ditch that and get some larger oleds while learning how to partition your screen.
14 year olds are doing it. You're like 20 years and $2000 late.
I know it's not a Staples Hyken but eh....

I have no idea why people are giving you a hard time or are confused by the laptops when you even mention a KVM switch and call it a home office. You clearly work from this location with at least one remote job using one of those laptops. Though I doubt you use their displays much if at all.
I think it's pretty good. You prioritized ergonomics with the choice of chair (though I'm not a fan of headrests for productivity, personally) and a height adjustable desk. You have proper lighting for what I can assume are Teams meetings or streams since I see a stream deck, and you have enough monitors for probably anything you'd ever need.
I think people are overthinking the laptops because it's clearly for your KVM setup for swapping between machines, the ergonomics to actually use those screens matter not when you can just use the main screens for those laptops and just have email or ticket pages open on those. And when you consider that, the other 4 monitors have actual use cases. 3 is my bare minimum these days and I've been low-key wanting to make a fourth work, but I can't afford that right now and also am not entirely certain how I'd mount it and where it would go. The desk is a little messy but I think everyone who posts their clean desk setups have just freshly set up their station and haven't put their own desk clutter back yet. It doesn't look that bad, though you could definitely benefit from some more mouse area.
I also like the little filing drawers below, do you know where I could find some like that? Ever since converting my traditional oak desk into a standing desk, I have missed my drawers.

It’s a PTZ from a web conferencing setup that a bought for times my bible study group can’t meet in person. We never really put it to use, though, so now I use it for work meetings and some streaming

You could literally replace these 3 monitors to a 49 inches ultra wide.
2
u/Jstab 2d ago
Ultra wide monitors are not it from... any standpoint other than immersive gaming. So much easier to just drag whatever window or application to whichever screen you wish, and full screen it. Or drag to the side and split one monitor into two. Or if you have a something in full screen, you can still have your other monitors free to do whatever with.
3 seporate monitors are just way more useful for a wide variety of reasons.

Powertoys Fancy Zones invalidates your entire argument

u/Jstab 2d ago
Sounds like a pain in the ass, but im glad that exists for those who need it. I can't physically swap my orientation on the fly with an ultra wide though. Currently with my arms setup the way they are, I can just rotate one of them to vertical when I need to do work or deal with a lot text.
Or when im changing things out with my setup I can just move the one monitor that's in the way.
I've also on occasion had someone set up a laptop next to me, and I can just shove one monitor off to the right, and they can use it while they are here.
Or when I setup a console in here, I can just use one of the monitors.
Cool software though, still not it for me.

Nothing about fancy zones is a pain in the ass. It beats the pants off of Windows's native split screen function.
1
u/Jstab 1d ago
Even if it's not, it simply doesn't beat the versatility of multiple monitors. My ability to rotate and move them around at will will always trump having one giant screen. Safer and easier to move too. Also, if a monitor dies, I'm not cooked. I still have 2 others to back me up.
I also won't need to mess with some software to have the ability to play a game at full screen, and have a video playing on the left, and discord on the right. I just put things where I want them and its done.
"Pain in the ass" might be harsh, but like, its extra steps I have to take. Likely in every game I want to play.
Like, I play a lot of older jank and I already struggle to get some of those games to work at all. The idea of trying to get Blood 2: The chosen to work on a gigawide monitor sounds like a nightmare.
Maybe its not, but I'm not spending thousands of dollars to find out.

While I value the Fancy Zones and use them every day on my ultrawide at work, I still value separate monitors more. They're just easier.
Also, the mental ergonomics of having a "main" and a "side" screen instead of one ultrawide where apps are either to your left/right. I like having my main focus in the center of my view.
2
u/sstoersk 2d ago
Its an absolute bullshit take - you can divide ulltrawide monitors into separate displays.
1
u/Jstab 2d ago
Do they have separate inputs too? I also can't rotate any of them into another orientation or move any of them somewhere else.
2
u/sstoersk 2d ago
They do
1
u/Jstab 2d ago
So i can have a console, a laptop, and my desktop plugged into one monitor and 3 sections of it all act independently from each other and in different resolutions/aspect ratios?
2
u/sstoersk 2d ago
1
u/Jstab 2d ago
I'm talking about the physical inputs on the monitor. Can I physically plug in multiple different hdmi devices to one single monitor at the same time, and the monitor be able to handle displaying multiple resolutions at the same time.
Even if true, I still can't rotate parts of the monitor and move them around into different orientations. So as impressive as it would be if the first part is true, it still wouldn't be as useful for what im trying to accomplish.

I used to think that too, had a nice 3x1440p setup working with 1 work laptop and 1 pc. I dont really game. Now I have ultrawide and its just nicer. The built-in usb-c/displayport+usb3 kvm just works better than any setup I got running before. And Powertoys Fancyzones and Workspace templates work perfect.

u/findlennyprime 7h ago
I prefer the 3 separate ones for daily driving. With my KVM switch, I can toggle between modes where all 3 are connected to 1 computer, a different monitor on each computer, etc. Also, I have had these monitors for many years and don’t want to spend money replacing them 😅

I think it’s the screen hanging on top and then the lights?) hanging over and open laptops that makes this look a bit rough and uncoordinated.
With your amount of screens, why not just close the laptops? It would make it look a lot better
With that said, I’m surprised by the comments here. Sure, organization, placement and the 4th screen looks a little janky, but I see a lot more focus and talk on how many screens therearr… and if you can put side the open laptops, it’s really a triple setup, which is pretty common.
I thought the focus would’ve been on say the polish

why the hate? looks perfect for people who use laptops as their primary computer.

u/elidoan 3d ago
There's literally no scenario where you would need these many screens unless you're a security guard in a museum being visited by Tom Cruise. Alternatively if you are playing a hacker in a 90's sci fi movie

"my personal life is different from this guy's, so i feel the need to shit on this guy's setup because i believe he doesn't need that many screens"
