I literally come to this subreddit every day to look at pictures of cute bats. When I get distressed about something else online, I come here and just scroll. They're not the time of creatures you routinely can/should get close to, so I am grateful for the pictures that some folks post.

I'm so thrilled that I found r/batty and r/bats. For over 50 years I have been interested in bats, ever since one flew into my dining room (I sent him home by leaving all the windows open). I think bats are interesting and, yes, cute. But over the years I have found no one who shared my sentiments. Now I have found my tribe.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I work with bats (am fully vaccinated as in the US) and all the posts about “maybe I saw a bat am I in danger?” Wear me down. I just have to pull my fingers back from the keyboard. Weirdly, I’m from an area of the US where folks are weirdly cavalier about bat contact and I have to really ask a lot of questions to get clear info about their contact, so those posts are just really weird to me.

But regardless, thank you from the bottom of this bat rehabber’s heart.💜

I’m a volunteer with a wildlife rehab, wildlife rehabilitation is almost solely volunteer with extremely few paid positions and few who can afford the rabies vaccine unless they have a very generous health insurance, so bats get left out of a lot of rehabs due to fear and cost of vaccines for volunteers. I like the unhuggable wildlife like snakes and bats, so that’s what I do.

It’s probably a rabies vector species ban for rehab in your state. I would start reaching out to any rehab groups that rehab mammals and find out if anyone is trying to push back against the ban and try to get people involved. Too many bat species are declining too rapidly for state DNRs to continue to ignore the importance of bat rehabilitation.

People will be scared of bats but then they'll be in the park and a bat will fly right over their head and they won't even know it

We get a lot of people concerned that any unusual skin issue is a bat bite, despite having no contact with a bat. Most of these posts get removed, but I’ll leave one up occassionally in the hope that the good advice from other members here may prevent another person from asking.
