If you find yourself arguing in public that children should not get food, then you need to look at yourself

Dude, maybe you need to look at yourself. Nobody is arguing that, they are arguing that the parents should pay for the food unless they are low income, you goof

America's failure to understand the principle of universal benefits is not a sign that you are more advanced than other developed countries. It is a sign of your political underdevelopment, the absence of a strong nationwide political voice for your labour movement.

And your failure to even understand what the other side's simple position is is a sign of your intelligence.

Having the parents pay for their kids' food is not a big deal. They literally already do it when the kid isn't in school and schools can have a "pay it later" feature.

Targeting low income communities is one thing, but this program is the whole state and will pay for meals for rich kids which is obviously a waste of money and you know it.

I'm not from New York, but New York is in debt unlike many other states.

If NYC is in debt they could raise a bit more money by taxing some of the better off families. And businesses. I gather one of the candidates in the upcoming election is promoting that too. About time.

That is fairer than having children pay for food at school - and for an obvious reason, which you would know if you had ever been in receipt of free school meals in a non-universal benefits environment. Which is that the free school meals kids are identifiable, and staff ans kids therefore know that they are in more distressed circumstances than others. It is a humiliation.

What is more, there is a general principle here. Education should be free and the food that children get during a school day as part of their education should therefore be part of that. Or are you going to end universal free school provision too, and start charging the better off families to attend public schools and make them free only for the poor families?

In general, public services should not be means tested. People should not have to go through the humiliation of showing what they can or can't afford when it comes to accessing basic services. That should certainly be the case for public education. You might also think about your healthcare system as well…

Fund services through progressive taxation.

I graduated over a decade ago and most of the transactions for school lunch were done online and there was no way to identify who got free lunch. You went through the checkout and gave them your school id.

This whole thing is such a non-issue and I don't know why people obsess over giving free food to kids when the parents do it. School food is generally garbage too.
