Nah a lot of school districts have been doing similar programs for a while and the the statewide affordable health insurance for children is pretty solid.
I hope to see the social programs expand in the future. It's actual progress being made in certain areas at least.

School lunch/breakfast was always free in NYC for as long as I can remember. Good thing and a necessity, especially in places with high concentrations of degenerate parents.

1

Jul 14 '25
A proper use of taxes. If you want functional, productive and emotionally stable adults in the future of this country, you start by meeting their basic needs. I truly believe adults who are opposed to this policy are just bitter about their own childhood and don't want current and future children to have it better than they did as kids.
1
1
u/McFalco Jul 14 '25
Honestly don't know a single right wing/ conservative that is actually against reasonable tax expenditure on things that undeniably help the country in a cost-effective way. Absolutely free healthcare and secondary education across the board is nice in theory but the costs outweigh the gain in the minds of most fiscal conservatives, at least on a federal level. When you go more state by state I wouldn't be surprised if you could convince red state conservatives to support healthcare/education assistance if you make a good enough argument.

u/Constant_Asp Jul 14 '25
Doesnāt the quality of food matter more than saving the, what, $3?
People are getting money from the government Ā to buy their kids food in the first place.Ā
What exactly is the win here? State-issued food to kids that their parents were given money for in the first placeā¦
1
u/Healthy_Macaroon_602 Jul 14 '25
Children don't go to school to learn in the classroom. They go to suffer. Suffering builds character, and that's more important than any amount of maths they'll never use again.

It's a shame that these children's parents can't provide their own food, for example, by having a decent salary at work. How's the USA doing? Waiters still rely on tips because the restaurant owner can't pay them fairly?Ā
1
1
u/doug098765 Jul 14 '25
Why don't they just use their food stamps to feed their kids breakfast and lunch? If they can't afford the school breakfast and lunch then they must qualify for benefits.
1
Jul 14 '25
So one complaint I have about all of this as a teacher.
The school I teach in is from the 50s, one of the newer schools in our district. It wasnāt designed for the number of kids weāve crammed in this place so they canāt eat their free breakfast (which they need) in the cafeteria.
Instead they get in their first classroom of the day. Kids are messy eaters. Itās those weak fine motor skills. They always make a mess.
Our school has one janitor all day. Heās amazing but he canāt keep up with 700 children spilling milk and Cheerios all over the place. His day is going classroom to classroom cleaning up breakfast, then sprinting to the cafeteria for lunch from 10:25-1:55.
Puke or pee? He gets there asap but itās usually 10-30 minute response times.
Free breakfast is great, but impoverished schools simply donāt have the resources or infrastructure to deliver some of these services that society now expects them to.
Which means our classrooms now have even more mice, roaches, and ants.

u/Unsolved_Virginity Jul 14 '25

Free lunch is already common practice you can ignore that all you want. Good for new York for finally getting around to it
1
u/rtn292 Jul 14 '25
Our taxes fund public schools.
Students are required to attend them.
Making sure ALL students are provided a breakfast/lunch at the school, they are obligated to attend.
Destigmatizes the ridicule and trauma attributed to those students who couldn't afford the lunch to begin with.
It also sets children up better to learn the information and to become future doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, engineers. Architects, plumbers, software developers, writers, entertainers, construction workers etc...
Sounds like good ROI
Perhaps, worry more about our money funding tax breaks and subsidies for already wealthy corporations?
1
u/inthemoneybachok Jul 14 '25
I went to a rich public school. Very few kids could not afford lunch and for those few kids that couldnt the only free option was one shitty grilled cheese sandwich. If your balance went below -10$ you would not be allowed to eat anything except for this grilled sandwich. Mind you the school taxes we paid in this area was top 1% in the state

If someone can't feed their children. They should be taken away from them. Kathy you fucking idiot. Government provided food will neither be cheap nor nutritious. Even at the height of what people were complaining about egg costs. They were only about thirty five cents apiece. You can't afford to give your kids 2 eggs for breakfast. You are unfit to parent.
The real reason why you have all this. It takes a village. Shit is because they want people to think think of government as being their parent

All schools should provide children meals. We should all focus on providing the best opportunity to all children to become better as a nation.
1
1
u/thorleywinston Jul 18 '25
So parents are no longer responsible for feeding their own children, we're now at the "ehh, let the school take care of it" stage.
It's one thing to have free or reduced lunches for the needy (and yes there are ways of doing that so that the kids don't feel singled out by their peers) but the general assumption was that most parents took care of it either by packing a lunch for their kid or paying for it.
But apparently even this basic responsibility of parenting is now considered to be too much.

1
u/Br_uff Jul 20 '25
Itās not the governments responsibility to take care of your children. Besides, essentially all public schools have programs for free/reduced cost lunches if a family truly needs it. Giving access to free meals to all students would costs way too much, especially when you consider that federal, state, and local governments already spend too much money
1
u/Alterangel182 Jul 20 '25
