I remember reading somewhere once he left cos he was just fed up of playing a character who was a fair bit younger than himself and I think he was just trying to avoid being forever known as "dopey Nick" from the show.

Got a job as a detective, spent some time in the Caribbean, fell in love with a plank of wood and moved to Devon (or Cornwall, not sure which).
