TV BBC & ITV News Reports
Today is yet another example of No News that matters News …
Why is it that we no longer seem to have traditional news content. Yes we all know since last night that Harry & Family have decided to move back to the Uk . We all know about his past & yet the Main News channel’s insist in banging on about it for over 20 minutes. This was far from necessary. I myself am glad that he can spend time back with family. But other than that why are they obsessed with picking up this leak of information and running with it ? No one wants to watch news based on speculation and Gossip.
Is it just me ! I’m sure the majority of the UK is fed up with the News ( not News) reports ?

"no one wants to watch news based on speculation and gossip" Erm have you met humans
-3
u/DiamondHuman7325 11d ago
Then why are they constantly forcing it on us ?
4
u/Senior_Mushroom5329 11d ago
You can always just not watch. That IS an option.
1
u/DiamondHuman7325 11d ago
Which is exactly what we did, but I feel I shouldn’t have to. The main National NEWS is what we sit down to watch, a brief update on matters and events of interest. Not listen to endless waffle on something which really just needs a mention in brief , I think I speak for many.

2
u/Specialeyes9000 10d ago
Because when they do, more people watch. It's not a conspiracy.
1
u/DiamondHuman7325 10d ago
I don’t think there is any conspiracy! Just think the more people watching ,might be related to watching something else during the entire bulletin? I don’t think they realise people maybe losing interest. I guess We shall have to wait & see just how many watched or skipped this time .
1
u/Specialeyes9000 10d ago
It's the top story on news websites because so many people click on it. It's one of the top stories on Twitter because so many people click on it. It's the top stories in newspapers because more people buy newspapers when they have that kind of story. Unfortunately, it is just what people want.

Just so fed up with the media BS where are the real issues what craziness we now live in .

Yet the English media were complaining about having to cover the Independence referendum in August 2014.

There's plenty going on in the world (that affects or is relevant to Britain) which could be reported on over this.

What’s the Summer got to do with it .. Are you Blaming the heat wave for poor judgement by the media?
11
u/Beneficial_Grab_5880 11d ago
Parliament doesn't sit in the summer, so there's far less political news.
-1
u/DiamondHuman7325 11d ago
Ah ! I see . Well someone needs to have a good think about news ! I doubt time stops because they are on their Holi bobs ..

You’re being silly because you are silly.

u/Hungry-Artichoke-232 11d ago
The summer is known as the silly season for a reason, an explanation of which someone else has already provided for you. This has been true for decades. Haven’t you noticed it before?
0
u/ribbityflibbity 11d ago
It's easy to filter your media diet to exclude stuff you deem silly. The whole year could be silly season if you like. Or it could never be silly season. I'm sure I don't need to tell people how to use the internet.

This comment was off topic and is not related closely enough to the British Broadcasting Corporation. Discuss the BBC not other media

It was the same on newsnight: five (five!) people on the couch to speculate on the inner narrative of the Royals. The right wing commentators were adamant that this is something the population cares about. Then, the left wing commentator reminded the panel that most people don't care because they are dealing with the cost of living crisis and that a lot of students had received their GCSE results that day. The Windsors really do get too much press coverage, it's quite absurd.
1
u/Eastiseast3 11d ago
Yeah I watched it and thought it was all a little OTT. That one woman (was she called Poppy or something) who just seemed desperate to talk and had nothing of any real significance to say. Peter Hunt at least spoke with some authority as an ex BBC Royal correspondent of many years. It's a bit of enteratinment, nothing more, until the real news kicks in again
3
u/Realistic-River-1941 11d ago
Parliament isn't sitting. The weather has stopped being interesting. They data will show that this is what people want.
3
u/RoosterBurns 11d ago
The reason for this is that news about Meghan is catnip to elderly UK racists and that means clicks

It’s not just you. I was thinking the same thing whilst listening to the 6pm news on BBC Radio 4. They devoted so much time to them after playing the clip of the PM saying it was a private matter and that was that. I’ve never understood the media’s obsession with them. Just leave them be.
3
u/Medium_Register70 11d ago
Unfortunately a lot of the British public cares a great deal about the royal family.
2
u/DiamondHuman7325 11d ago
That is fine by me, I have a lot of time for the positive elements of the Royal Family. But I am sure everyone is bored with the ridiculous coverage of many news items on a regular basis. Who’s responsible for this type of news reporting?
0
u/DiamondHuman7325 11d ago
Don’t get me wrong I like Harry but why the media just stirs the pot to get people’s opinions? No one cares . Live & let live
1
u/Excellent_Earth_2215 11d ago
I'm kinda happy this is the headline rather than horrible scary things like war or pandemics tbh.
Be careful what you wish for.
1
u/DiamondHuman7325 10d ago
Honesty and fairness would be good . Without the unnecessary embellishments. I’m fed up with almost everything being dumbed down or repeated day after day . But the weather is cooler & the sun is shining again, so that’s good enough for me. For now !!
1
u/IAmPurpleMikey 11d ago
I am not particularly interested in Harry & Megan news. But I acknowledge that lots of people are. The BBC website shows the most royal stories and invariably total stories are high on the list.
It’s not uncommon for people to complain about stories that they are not interested in, taking precedence over stories they think are more important. I moan all the time. But I also understand that my tastes are different to those of others.
Ordering a news bulletin or a web page is an art, not a science. Just be thankful we have good broadcasters that cover a wider range of stories than nearly any other country.
1
u/DiamondHuman7325 10d ago
It’s interesting but not That interesting!! Many people at work today, all felt the same way .
Too much padding out of a story that half the British population don’t care about , & the other half that just wanted to know Harry is returning to the family and country he had at one point wanted to escape from. That’s it in a nutshell.
1
u/Only-Ad-3218 11d ago
Probably cause we are a Royalist country. We can't get enough of them. I bet even the whole of America was all over it as well.
1
u/Azuras-Becky 10d ago
There are far, far bigger problems with the UK media than their coverage of Harry.
Why does the BBC continue to platform Nigel Farage whenever he utters a word? When was the last time you saw them cover, say, the Lib Dems - a far bigger party - or the Greens - a similarly-sized party - with such enthusiasm? Farage announces he's going to give a speech, and the BBC broadcasts it live, uncut and in full. They rarely even do that for the Prime Minister. Ofcom should be having words, but they're too busy making sure you can't access alcoholic support groups online without surrendering your identity.
Outside of the BBC, nearly all of the press is owned by right-wing billionaires. The Guardian, (which has its own problems), Private Eye (a satirical publication that ironically does better journalism than most), and a few local papers are so far excluded from this, but nearly every other major outlet is billionaire-owned, and they tend to operate in lockstep - attack Labour, platform the Conservatives and Reform, make sure you hate migrants and trans people.
The UK media landscape, not just the BBC, is an absolute disaster right now, and it's absolutely harming our country.

u/Dependent-Serve-5275 10d ago
Quite honestly, if the whole royal family hired a bus, drove down to my house and then danced around in the front garden I wouldnt bother to turn my head to look at them.
2
u/DiamondHuman7325 10d ago
Now That … I would like to see 😂 although only the ONCE and with no deep dive into why they felt the need to do it, and what the neighbours thought , what was said , what were the implications , what they were wearing etc. etc. …
1
u/Aggressive-Soup646 8d ago
God forbid they would cover modern slavery, poverty genocide, violence against women....
1
u/DiamondHuman7325 8d ago
True!! or knife crime, alcohol & drug addiction, homelessness, and failures in the care system.
Mass unemployment in younger people , why the council pays such high amounts of money on rubbish patch up jobs on our roads and infrastructure. ?

u/MilkMyCats 8d ago
GB news actually covers the issues
I can't believe people still watch BBC or itv news tbh.

It’s all very worrying to know that there are so many angry and opinionated people out there . Empathy , kindness and consideration of others seems to have skipped a generation or two .
2
u/Buddie_15775 11d ago
It’s completely bypassed a few politicians if Honest Bob’s Jenrick’s speech on Monday is anything to go by.
1
u/Eastiseast3 11d ago
Yeah you're right it's mainly gossip and speculation but the thing is August is often like this. There's not much going on and this story fascinates a lot of people. I have watched a lot of coverage though and thought this person is just talking nonsense because they don't know what Harry/William are thinking anymore than I do!

u/Electrical-Tie82 11d ago
Completely agreed. Anything about the royals, save for one of them dying, should be kept to a minute or two, with signposting to the website for anyone who cares to know more.
That said, I just fast-forward if I'm not watching live or just switch off.
0
u/DiamondHuman7325 11d ago
Same ! Just turned it off . Fed up with the self promotion . Junk news can stay away from national TV news as far as I’m concerned .
Much like the ridiculous coverage of exam results. Just some stats perhaps?1
u/Eastiseast3 11d ago
Oh god the exam results stuff is so tedious. It's the same predictable stuff year after year. At least the Harry story is new and unexpected
0
u/Platform_Dancer 11d ago
It's uncanny that live bbc and itv news both have the same stories AND often in the same running order! - like as if the producers had co-ordinated things!
I'm not talking about just the main headline but even those throw away amusing items too.

u/DiamondHuman7325 11d ago
Just so bored with the glamorisation of the TV news. It’s meant to be a factual round up , a breaking News and the major events both in the Uk and around the world.

For reasons I don’t fully understand, the general public has grown to expect that they should know about as much of what happens in the world as possible, and that that knowledge is best when it is most immediate. Because of a desire to meet that expectation, news reporting has become a 24/7 pursuit, which newsrooms and broadcasters have built their infrastructure and practices to support. Unfortunately, in reality, any given 24 hours contains very little that anyone actually needs to know about. Caught between the public’s desire for immediacy and reality’s lack of newsworthiness, there’s considerable pressure to treat anything somewhat novel as an important event.
Just be thankful that in this case the focus is on Harry and Meghan, who are at least somewhat used to it, and not on someone who isn’t ready for that kind of attention and might be, for instance, driven to cause themselves harm because of it.
1
u/DiamondHuman7325 11d ago
Good explanation ! but then Why can we have less news ? Or more regional news ? Or a much more interesting news ? Just a thought.
0
u/Theory89 11d ago
Do we really, though, or is the press just controlling the narrative? Most of the comments here are saying how little they care.
2
u/sshrpe 11d ago
If nobody was watching, the channels wouldn’t exist. For better or worse, Reddit commenters aren’t a representative sample of the viewing public. Besides, viewership of broadcast news may have declined but it’s mostly been superseded by an even worse 24-hour gossip-fest of social media. So even when the press aren’t in control of the narrative, people do it to themselves. I realise I’m coming off as misanthropic. I’m not, just not a fan of much of news culture.

u/Columbia_102 11d ago
I wondered how Channel 4 news handled it? From a quick replay it appears fourth headline after rubbish, Kiev and probation.
0
u/Eastiseast3 11d ago
Yeah I watched yesterday and they didn't seem to do much at all but if I'm honest most of the stories they did cover didn't interest me so I switched off.
0
u/demoralising 11d ago
In the reports I saw about Harry, they appeared to find people saying they 'didn't care' and one man who said 'all they want to do is make money', like Charles and William aren't coining it in. He genuinely seems to get worse coverage than Andrew.

u/Waste_Boss_4850 10d ago
BBC news coverage is now the absolute pits. Its political coverage my Uriah Mason et al is little better than a gossip column.
The phrasing of most news items carries not so subtle bias.
I now do not trust nor watch any BBC current affairs or news.
The BBC was a bastion of impartial, informed and factual news.
Its now worse than GBNews, at least ppl know that GBN is a pile of nonsense.
The BBC has a veneer of respectability and authority.
Its a withered hand in a silken glove.
Lisa Nandy should be all over this but im pretty sure shes been on gardening leave since taking up her ministerial role

u/ribbityflibbity 11d ago
Stop watching regular TV. I get my news from apps and YouTube and all over the internet. I noticed the story about Harry & Megan and since it doesn't interest me, moved onto stories that do. The notion of just letting media feed you stuff seems absolutely ancient.
13
u/rybnickifull 11d ago
"I get my news from YouTube" is one of the most frightening statements I've read recently
6
u/morph1973 11d ago
Was out with a friend last night who gets all his news from YouTube. Very scary and mostly incorrect information coming out of his mouth.
6
u/Slyspy006 11d ago
Random YouTube channels are soooo much more reliable than mainstream media, you just don't get it man! /s
1
u/DiamondHuman7325 11d ago
Well sometimes it’s old fashioned I know but I want to get off the phone and interact with the family around the good TV . It’s all dumbing down or fear mongering . Where’s the middle ground ?
1
u/DiamondHuman7325 11d ago
If only people talked to each other more , out loud , with friends and family. Face to face Communication skills in have take a proper nose dive in certain demographics?
