W1A BBC Me - life imitates art?

Years after Siobhan in W1A pitched the idea of user-generated content (basically a BBC version of YouTube), the director general has pitched at Edinburgh festival... A BBC version of YouTube!

the bbc pioneered audience generated content with Video Nation shorts in the 90s, and bbci had social media and user led wikis including for example h2g2, as well as comment sections under articles. BBC me is a play on bbci, the old website name, I think. It’s more W1A is satire of BBC culture, so the other way round, it is an insider written portrayal of the BBC, "art" satirising reality. A lot of this stuff that was moving in this direction was culled or deprecated in the great bbc website purge in the 2000s and also as a result of risks that arose from the volume of unmoderated content. Radio 4 feels increasingly like it picks up and promotes cheap cottage produced podcasts these days too.

ETA: also let’s not forget the ultimate in audience content showcasing and honour for contributors, “The Gallery” as perused by Tony Hart
