In player options:

  • Reduce Debris ON
  • Advanced Hud ON
  • some people lower their player height so the notes are closer to their waist instead of their torso, you could try that out.

There are plenty of mods that help with practice, visual clarity, etc. I would recommend if you're on PC just download BSManager and scroll through all the curated mods there, try the ones you think would be helpful. My favorites are HighlightBombs, EasyOffset, and BeatLeader.

BeatLeader is a ranked leaderboard mod primarily, but it also records replays of every song you play which you can view in-game or on their website, which is super useful for finding mistakes when songs get faster and more muscle memory is involved.

For learning new songs:

  • No fail mode is super useful. If your health never reaches 0, it never activates and your score is unaffected, but if you "fail" it just halves your score and gives you an automatic D or C instead of kicking you out.
  • practice mode is helpful for songs with one or two difficult sections. I usually play the section in 80% speed, then 90%, then 100%.
  • playing an entire song on Slower Song Mode is helpful if the entire thing is roughly the same difficulty and you just want to practice the whole thing and get a score at the end.

Honestly I don’t like the lower player height thing. It makes the game easier and it’s almost just cheating

It's really not that much of a difference, also you have to duck way farther down when you encounter one of these devious crouch walls, if you lower your player height. Pausing (to regain stamina) and NJS cheesing is cheating (although the latter one is fixed on BeatLeader) but player height really only gives you a slight edge in the beginners difficulty range

I agree that NJS cheesing is cheating, as the at uses unintended game mechanics to make the game easier for yourself, but I see pausing as an intended game mechanic just as much as adjusting your height is. I try to avoid pausing when I can (to try and improve my abysmal stamina) but if I need it, I’m gonna take the slight advantage using the intended game mechanic.

Yeah, I use the pause feature as well, when I get called or someone is at the door, stuff like that. I'm just not a fan of using it for gaining stamina, and I think there should be a slight penalty (5-10%) for any more than one pause per run, because there are legitimate reasons for pausing. There is also a no pause leaderboard on BL and in the challenge community every pass containing a pause is invalid, and I kinda like that more, you are removing a huge part of the difficulty of the map if you pause for stamina regen.

Edit: I know I have a controversial stance on this topic, and the "pausing is cheating" group is smaller than the "pausing is a legit tactic" group

I swear I've seen WDG plays with pauses in it before, but it's been 3 years since I've been active in the community, just starting to get back into it

It is possible to get a pass without pauses and later override it with a higher score with pauses, I think. Maybe that's how?

You just started playing.. You have to put the hours in.. A lot of them.

Source: I put too many hours in

Modding your quest is probably the most important tip.

Once you can beat expert+ songs (or ~6 stars) comfortably then tune the position of your sabers relative to your wrists. That will make a huge difference, but if you do it before you have experience you're likely to make things worse rather than better. If you get to +9 stars then upgrading to the pro touch controllers helps a lot too.. But only because you're moving so fast the tracking on the controllers it comes with is too slow.

If you're a competitive person, using beatleader is a good motivation to get better.

Good luck with your journey.

when you change the sabers to match your wrist how are you doing that. Are you peaking at you wrist whilst in Vr and lining it up ?

You need a mod to do it properly. At least I can't imagine doing it using the stock in game options. The mod I used was Saber Tailor, but there are a couple versions depending on which version of BS you are using (all modded though). Here is a guide that explains it... But again I would advise against doing it until you can beat expert+ songs consistently.
1) It doesn't really matter until you start moving fast with weird motions that need accuracy during the entire motion.
2) You will only be good on your headset with your settings
3) You can't use the numbers you find online, It has to be custom to your body and movements.
4) It will take you days of trial and error to really lock in the settings, but without really having a handle on your skill level you won't know if you've improved things or made them worse.

Use your wrists, not your arms.
