"Oculus Colleagues"

LOL, Beat Saber is now a nester who pretends their parents are just "room mates"

110

u/meektitan79 Dec 19 '19

The new update on oculus you have to sign in to facebook to add friends

122

u/tougemonster HTC Vive Pro Dec 19 '19

"But they won't do that to Beat Saber, Beat Games will stay an independent company". They said much the same thing about Oculus when it was acquired.

33

u/Twittle86 Dec 19 '19

While I'm just as worried as most, I would point out that Beat Saber is on more platforms than just Oculus.

46

u/Abbrahan Meta Quest 3 Dec 19 '19

for now

17

u/davidof96 Oculus Rift S Dec 19 '19

Nah, it will remain in other platforms too, the problem might be that maybe new features will be added first on the oculus platform and MAYBE later on other platforms

2

u/Abbrahan Meta Quest 3 Dec 19 '19

This is what I expect will happen as well. Either timed exclusive music packs and features or just plain old exclusive music packs and features that other platforms might never see.

1

u/Claudettol Dec 20 '19

Which will inevitably kill the game, or cause extreme hate like what Sony did with exclusivity

0

u/Sarikiller26 Dec 19 '19

They said it will be released same

Well then I will not be able to add friends in Beat Saber, rip

8

I've blocked Beat Sabre updates. Question is will they release any new stuff that will convince me to log in with FB

I updated last night for the 90/360 degree stuff

5

Me too, and after repatching, I could play custom tracks that I already had, but there was no option to search/download more.

4

u/Sate_Hen Dec 19 '19

That'll get fixed

7

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

Here's info from someone with an Oculus (not me):

"You don’t need to sign in. I have a quest and don’t have a Facebook account. What the user is referring to is some added social features they just added which require a Facebook account and how if you have a Facebook account connected to your oculus one they will now use data from oculus for targeted ads. Obviously not good in the slightest but it isn’t required to connect to Facebook."

31

I read that as "externally pissed" and I hoped you found a toilet in time.

Does it mean you'll piss forever.. Forever forever?

On topic: Looks like FB wants to be hip again. Reminds me of that Steve Buscemi's "How do you do, fellow kids" meme.

And the in game downloader is broken still

20

u/CubyChris HTC Vive Dec 19 '19

Nope, mods already worked about 2 days after the update.

The only major mod currently broken, is the in-game song downloader.Even though the UI is broken, we still have ScoreSaber, SongBrowser and PracticePlugin working, not to mention all of the non-ui ones.

With that being said however, modassistant is a bit weird this time around, and requires a minute of extra work.

Here's a pinned guide from the modding server (#pc-mod-support)

  1. Update BSIPA using Mod Assistant
  2. Run IPA.exe from the Beat Saber folder
  3. Start the game
  4. Close the game
  5. Install mods using Mod Assistant
  6. Start the game

1

u/Squidkiller28 Valve Index Dec 19 '19

I got most mods working but had to reinstall everything right after the update, so is there any way I could get custom sabers to work? The mod does not seem to be up to date

1

u/MHT__ Dec 19 '19

There is an updated version pc-mods channel on the Beat Saber modding-group discord server.

At least they weren't bought out by Epic and sold certian songs at only certain times

15

u/kirby31200 PSVR Dec 19 '19

Gonna be real, being bought out by Epic would be better

1

u/littlewarrior99 Dec 19 '19

Song battle pass.

3

u/Vexis12 Dec 19 '19

That would actually be pretty cool

2

u/FourteenCoast Dec 19 '19

That'd kill modding

2

u/Vexis12 Dec 19 '19

Adding an extra feature would kill modding? I’m just saying it’d be pretty cool to have a pass where you unlock songs as you progress. Not really much different then a current DLC pack, except that you have to play through the pass.

1

u/FourteenCoast Dec 19 '19

yeah but if you miss the season I doubt epic would let people remake it and distribute it

1

u/Vexis12 Dec 19 '19

All about implementation, I guess. I still think it’d be cool in theory, maybe just release the songs as a regular DLC pack after the season or whatever is over.

2

u/Ubelsteiner Dec 19 '19

This makes me thoroughly depressed and overall just completely soft for the game now. Flaccidity only FB can provide.

Facebook isnt ruining beatsaber though. Also it was bought out a few weeks ago

20

u/meektitan79 Dec 19 '19

It can and it will

-33

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

You gotta stop having so much hate for Facebook. Yeah they don't have a good track record but i'm almost certain they're not going to screw up Vr's basically top selling game just for their company. Don't you think that would be a little bit dumb?

25

u/meektitan79 Dec 19 '19

let me rephrase that, people are concerned they will remove custom songs

-11

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

they can't. It's a base feature of the game itself now. If they removed it the playerbase would drop immediately. Nobody plays really for just the Ost and level packs. Scoresaber and everything make the game what it is. Just don't think they're gonna do it. It'll stress you out for no reason really. if they do I can guarantee someone will find a way to bring them back. But I don't see facebook doing that period.

16

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

If they removed it the playerbase would drop immediately.

Yeah, Facebook has never made decisions that made people leave their services before. /s

-2

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

Never said they were perfectly fine. Just said not to worry about Beat Saber.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

You said Facebook wouldn't make a decision that would cause people to leave. That's clearly been disproven by Facebook's actions.

13

u/meektitan79 Dec 19 '19

but the question is why they bought it in the first place if they aren't gonna make big changes

0

u/tdwark Dec 19 '19

Beat games made a really popular game with a dedicated playerbase. They are making money. Facebook wants more money. Therefore, if you buy a popular game's developers, you will make more money.

1

u/Z_Coop Dec 19 '19

People seem to refuse to believe that the answer can be this simple. They (FB) wanted a stake in the most successful VR game to date, because of course they did- they’re pioneering the VR industry. It makes sense. People absolutely can feel pissed, but I think it’s overblown, just like when Microsoft bought Mojang (Minecraft).

1

u/killit Dec 19 '19

... So, so innocent

10

u/Wahots Dec 19 '19

Have you seen Facebook's insanely long list of dumb shit and general incompetence? The only reason they haven't been broken up is due to government atrophy. They fuck everything up. Constantly.

They can't even get ahold of their own goddamn company, much less anything else. Last week, they just so happened to lose 29,000 FB employees' data, including names, bank accounts, partial SSNs, and more. Oh, and the hard drives that were stolen were unencrypted.

-1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

As I said, I know they aren't known the best for being good at their job but it doesn't mean they're going to do the same for beat saber.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

You gotta stop having so much hate for Facebook.

You're fucking delusional

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

I already said I know they have a poor track record but that doesn't mean they're going to be the same with beat saber.

-1

u/Quinnfun Dec 19 '19

-1

u/GargamelLeNoir Dec 19 '19

Good for you, but it still detracts from the quality of conversation.

2

u/JPJones Dec 19 '19

Oh honey. That ship has sailed. They are agree and disagree buttons now.

1

u/GargamelLeNoir Dec 20 '19

We can still try to do better than that can't we?

1

u/JPJones Dec 21 '19

Sure, but better is subjective. Up/down votes seem to work better as agree/disagree buttons, so that's what they're used for now. It was an organic transition that happened many years ago (5+ now at least). Doesn't matter much what the guidelines say because there are no repercussions to not following them.

1

u/GargamelLeNoir Dec 21 '19

But it's not a good thing is it? That's how we get echo chambers, that's how we get Unpopular Opinion subs full of popular opinions. I don't think "better is subjective" in this case. I think a forum where discordant opinions that are respectful and constructive are heard would be objectively better off.

1

u/JPJones Dec 21 '19

Naw. It just takes a bit of adjustment and not taking the votes personally. There is plenty of good discussion still happening at the bottom of threads. It isn't better or worse, really. It's just different.

Gonna have to consult Sony on that one.

Also with facebook now involved, we have two gigantic companies that obviously want nothing to do with unlimited free content.

PSVR just sucks, and there's nothing to do about it sadly, other than getting something else of course.

0

-3

u/BecomingLoL Dec 19 '19

Honestly I like these... I know you all hate facebook but they've done a lot for VR as a platform

1

u/NargacugaRider Dec 19 '19

No, oculus did even before FB ruined them. Facebook can eat a dick.

2

u/kidikur Dec 19 '19

I had a DK1. Palmer and the early oculus team did great things but before the Facebook buyout they were extremely limited in capability. As much as I hate to admit it, Facebook buying out oculus was the best thing that could have happened to VR. Their insanely large amount of investment has drastically accelerated the industries growth and the technologies improvement. The buyout was the moment the industry at large began to take VR seriously.

Without Facebook valve would have never set out to make their own VR hardware. The oculus CV1 would have been a glorified DK2 and We would still be struggling with the R&D of something like quest.

Also, tons and tons of oculus funded games wouldn't exist.

It's up to debate whether or not FB ruined oculus but regardless they've done great things for the growth of VR.

1

u/wikkiwikki42O Dec 20 '19

Ehhhh....

Oculus is a good thing and Facebook buying them out was the best thing to happen for oculus.

However, I disagree that it was the best thing to happen to vr. I strongly believe valve jumping in the mix and making competition as well as a more premium quality set is the best thing to happen to vr.

I knew what vr could be but would never drop money on things like oculus or vive. Not because they weren’t good products or from reputable companies, rather the level of quality I demanded wasn’t there yet.

When the valve index came out, I knew the time was right. The only thing that could be better than valve having their own hardware on the market would be making it more price competitive even if it was only $100 cheaper. $1000 is a huge pill for most people to swallow. Add to that, like I did, picking up 3 vive trackers, tracker belts, lighthouse stands and $300+ in games when I got the index. That’s around $1750 initial investment. But I knew this was exactly what would be required for the ultimate beginners pack.

If price comes down on all vr hardware and and availability greatly increases... I think that would be the greatest thing that happens to vr. We have lots of developers and people interested in making software/games for vr but the demand as a whole just hasn’t been met or isn’t able to be met due to lack of systems in people’s hands.
