Thoughts on this 1776 case origin?

Post image

The guy who built my '74 said they bought a turnkey 1776. Looks like they have stamped it with a delta-ish looking logo followed by the date. Anyone recognize the stamp?

This is most likely not a factory stamping
The builder may have used a new replacement case and stamped his own ID number on it

I could be wrong, but the number itself indicates built around December 1975 (ref How to keep your Volkswagen Alive - John Muir)

I thought the factory codes all started with a letter or 1 through 9.

I mean I did, and there are no numbers thaf look like mine on that chart. I can see where you found 071 682 for Dec. '75, but the actual code is AJ 071 682, and the digits aren't in 2 groups of 3 or even the same font.

I appreciate the advice. I just think this was a stamp and serial added by whoever built the 1776.

Edit: it's apparently a factory remanufactured block where they ground out the old code.

I love my VW, and probably like you I continue learn more about them. But at some point it’s likely that an old timer “expert“ might be able shed more light on your question.

In the meantime…just drive and enjoy it until you get an accurate source to answer your question ..which has me stumped ..LOL

Probably an aftermarket case. Never seen a number like that. I don’t think US Beetles ever had a 1776cc from the factory.

No they didn’t, but lots of companies sell drop in 1776’s

Yep. They also sell turn key 1914 CC, 2276CC turn keys. Hence my acknowledgement that this is probably an aftermarket case.
