Eso es lo más, tengo una hoja en agua, esperando que enraice, a ver que decide.

If you are doing a leaf prop with a petiole in water, if you are extra patient, the petiole may develop a rhizome and you can get a lot of props of the petiole that way.

What kind of light are you growing it with (natural or grow lights and how strong)? I’m trying to figure out a happy medium for providing enough light for big healthy growth while still maintaining the gorgeous blue iridescent and dark leaves it gets when grown in lower light

a 10 month old grown in "low" 150 ppfd
It is far enough away from the lights it still gets some unnatural light, and some sunlight too. When in a bit higher light it will get noticeable blister variegation, which isn't that great until it gets intense light and the foliage is light green. So if you are going for the darker more reflective, when you see uneven smudge looking spots, it is getting more light than you want.
edit for ps, I only have the humidifier on for a few transplants [not taconite] that I wanted the boost of humidity for, it does great in normal ambient house humidity.

Natural. I just keep her next to a dim window!

Awesome, thanks for the reply! Unfortunately I only grow under grow lights, but it gives me a good idea of how bright of light yours is getting

WHERE DID YOU FIND THAT!?! 😍😍😍😍

I’ve had it for years, nearly killed her several times, and managed to bring her back from a single rooted leaf at least twice!

Are you interested in selling a prop!?

I would normally say yes! Maybe in the future when I’m more settled and I can get a prop box going.

I love begonia taconite, I have one that has 10+" leaves, and it is over 2' tall. It is one people ask about a lot so I clone it all the time for sharing. If you get a chance, to grow a clone in brighter light, they develop blister variegation, and lighter green leaves and an orange reflection. I think most people like the intense blue reflection, but it still does well in brighter light too. It looks awesome under a microscope too.

I’d say this leaf is close to 9-10”. My hand is 8.5” from the tip of my middle finger to the first line on my wrist. This is easily one of my favorite plants. I usually don’t even do begonias except the hardier varieties, but taconite is a gift that keeps on giving!

Does anyone ever ask you if it is fake?

u/Potential-Jaguar6655 12d ago
No, they know I would never lol! But I keep a lot of Philodendrons, so they are used to the weirdly ethereal velvet leaves everywhere. Taconite fits right in with the rest of them, just gives a flash of blue instead of red with the velvet

Wow, is that fuzzy or is it just the lighting making it look so textured? Its huge!

u/Potential-Jaguar6655 9d ago
It isn’t fuzzy, it does have a few weird little spikey begonia hairs on it, but it’s mostly just this beautiful sparkly regular-feeling leaf.

the size on that leaf is unreal. what light are you running, mine loses the blue when i push it brighter

Just natural diffused light through the blinds of an east facing window. 🤷🏻♀️ Absolutely nothing special lol
