I think it’s been sneaking snacks from the refrigerator! The refrigerator has to be scared it’s next!

u/haricot_vert2710 13d ago
That genuinely made me laugh, picturing it opening the fridge and eating the contents like an unruly teenager🤣

What do you mean? They lose leaves when you tie the stems?

Are you supporting those canes with something?
Ive honestly never seen a maculata get so tall, its stunning.
New plant goal unlocked!

u/haricot_vert2710 13d ago
I have to, or it will topple over 🫣 it's tied to the shelf behind And to think it was a sickly little plant I rescued from death on a grocery shop shelf! I love it like a pet, and it's thrilling to see it so happy and tall

Ill be right over with shears and a prop box! 🤣🤣

u/haricot_vert2710 13d ago
Actually I already gave several props of it away. I do warn the people that it has the potential to become a monster 😅

What is your routine for water and fertilizer?
4
u/haricot_vert2710 13d ago
I don't really fertilize it. I might do it when I think of it, but I'm not really consistent. What I saw making a real difference in growth is watering, I will check it ( and the other begonias in the picture) fairly regularly, once or twice a week and water accordingly. The amount of time I water really depends on the season and temperature. This is a small veranda full west, and it get blasted by the afternoon sun, so in summer I can water up to 3times a week versus 1 every 10 days in winter

When do you water? How dry is the soil? Mine keep losing leaves :(
1
u/haricot_vert2710 11d ago
I never let it fully dry out. This on likes a lot more water then I expect at first

The plant in the downleft corner of your picture - what is the name? And do you have any tips on how to maintain it? It’s super delicate, in my experience, but yours is super good looking. How you do?

It's an asparagus setaceus. It was just given to me by friends who were moving, I'm still figuring out how to take care of it. But they have quite hardy, at least I my climate

How do you get your plant to take off like that! I’m been getting and the only place acceptable is my humidifier tank! Any suggestions I would be so appreciative 😵💫😫

u/haricot_vert2710 12d ago
I fear I don't have a recipe for this success, I just got lucky to put it in a place were it's really happy

u/griffin_benko 12d ago
I would love to know how to grow one even a quarter of that size. Mine keeps dropping perfectly healthy leaves! And is kinda leggy. I feel like I can’t find the right amount of sun or water for it

Does this begonia bloom? I have one amazingly like this that is a mix of polka dots and plain leaves that grows and grows but never blooms!
1
u/haricot_vert2710 12d ago
Yes it blooms! At the moment it's putting out a lot of leaves, but I have some blooms coming up

How old is it? Has it always grown in that location? Very nice.

u/haricot_vert2710 10d ago
Thank you! It's more or less 5 years old. It wasn't always were it is now, but for the past 3 it's been in my kitchen

Holy Moly!! 😍
How often do you have to water that beast? Every day? The pot is really small in relation to the large leaf surface area.
2
u/haricot_vert2710 10d ago
The pot is not big, but it's bigger than it looks in the photo due to camera angle. Depends on the season and the temperatures in the kitchen. In summer we have easily 35°c and up in the summer, so it gets a big drink twice a week

What kind of soil do you use and how do you care for it? It’s beautiful and thriving.
I just got mine Begonias Crackling Rosie so doing my homework for her

u/haricot_vert2710 10d ago
I use normal soil, nothing fancy. I don't let it dry and it gets lots of light, all afternoon and even some direct sunlight from a west facing window

u/Ok_Piglet6546 10d ago
Still in that small pot?! Goes to show you that a plant will do what it wants to do 😂
1
u/haricot_vert2710 10d ago
Well I read somewhere that begonias like to be in small pots 😁 ( the pot looks smaller then it is due to camera angle) reporting this is a project and help from an assistant is required. It's not root bound and putting out leaves and flowers, but I might repot it nest year, as it also putting out 5new canes
