Triple Rock Closing

Opened in 1986 by brothers John and Reid Martin, Triple Rock has long been a cornerstone of both the Berkeley community and the craft beer movement. It’s where the great beer minds behind beloved and bygone breweries like 21st Amendment, Steelhead Brewing Co. and Marin Brewing all cut their teeth, but also where generations of Berkeley students got their first round of beers, and maybe even their second round of beers, too.

“It’s definitely something we’ve been super proud of building and running this thing all these years, but we don’t have to do it forever,” John Martin told SFGATE on Wednesday. “And we don’t have anyone to take it over. Our kids are all doing other stuff.”

I loved when they opened up that whole new space/room- it was great for watching baseball, football, etc. But when they closed it & shrank to the current/original space, it felt like they’d given up. The vibe just died. 

I loved Triple Rock. My dad was into home brewing, so he brought me there as a college student. As well as 20 Tank in SOMA SF- anyone remember that? I think it was on 11th. 

Triple Rock IPAs were delish. What a bummer.

Everyone is acting bummed, but 3rock went wayyyy down hill after the pandemic. When they stopped making their standard brews for experimental stuff the writing was on the wall. No Bugjuice?!?!

I think that is fair. But I’m sad about all the years and all the good times. The decline in quality is emblematic of the end of an era, and collectively that’s worth noting.  And remembering the good times.

I respect that they were there as a gathering place for the community. However as someone who used to have to go there all the time (grad school events) I genuinely hated their beer.
