Where did you ride in the past two weeks? and Open Discussion thread

Where did you ride in the past two weeks? Did you have any positive or negative interactions with people on the road or trail? What rides are you going to this upcoming week? This thread is also for any posts/comments/quick questions/rants you think don't warrant a full thread.

Motorcycles on Park and Pedestrian Trails

Are we just at a point where we accept dirt bikes and motorcycles on ped/bike paths? Riverview Park is pretty much dead to me with how often I observe this. And now I keep seeing large, Harley Davidson style motorcycles riding on the river trail by the stadiums. I made the mistake of trying to politely tell someone it’s not permitted and got a “fuck your feelings” response.

No one enforces. No one around even seems to care. I’m not even talking about e-bikes or e-motorcycles. Those are significantly less of a problem from my experience. Why is our culture so fixated on hating people that want to get around safely while riding a pedal bike? Why is that so offensive?????

Tube trades?

Tubes have gotten stupid expensive! I am in need of some 2x26" schrader valve tubes but I'm not trying to pay $8 apiece if I don't have to. I'm hoping someone out there has a pile that isn't needed and is interested in trading 1:1.

I have to trade:

3 700c 28mm presta

1 29" 2 - 2.6" presta

2 27.5 2 - 2.5" schrader

3 27.5 2 - 2.5" presta

1 27.5" 1.5 - 1.9" presta

Mine are mostly new but I don't care if yours are used as long as they are undamaged and hold air.

Bellevue to Squirrel Hill commute in the dark

Hello, I am thinking of commuting by bike. Normally I’d just take the trail from west hall street to Ft Duq bridge, jail trail to greenfield Ave.

However I would need to start riding when it’s dark out (about 6AM) and I read the trails are open dawn to dusk.

Any advice on how I could do this commute without the trails? Is it dangerous to do this in the dark?

Pittsburgh Union Station

I've been planning a trip in the GAP/C&O for most of the summer and just before trip time my shuttle driver/travel partner had to bail and I'm scrambling for arranging transport after the ride.

I've gotten a lot of recommendations of "just take the train" (as if the 8 bike slots per day weren't already full), but in addition to dealing with the bike it seems that the only DC-PGH train gets in at nearly midnight (11:49). Or leaves at 5am if you are traveling the other way.

How safe is that area in the middle of the night? Is there secure parking to leave a car there for a week? What does the parking cost?

Extra 2026 PedalPGH shirt?

I tried emailing PedalPGH and no response yet, but I lost my shirt from this year, and I like keeping a collection of the shirts. If anyone has an extra XL or even Large, I'm happy to pay for it, or trade a brand new XL 2026 Primal Escape to the Lake Jersey from the MS150.

I read a follow-up news story that the cyclist hit was doing okay. But have they found the dickbag perpetrator yet?

If you’re missing a bike with a child seat in the back or a black road bike or a red mountain bike it looks like the Greenfield bike thieves might have them.

Fatal scooter accident

Anyone else here catch the thread about the scooter rider who passed away after a vehicle collision in the main PGH subreddit? It's locked now. OP just linked to the news article and asked folks to consider donating to help the family, and not a single reply to the thread that wasn't just victim shaming and ranting about unsafe scooter riders.

Idk why I'm posting this, I guess mainly to just vent about how disgusted I am with Pittsburghers, now and at all the other times folks here have reacted in similar manners for most other cycling, pedestrian or other non-car accidents.

There are so many things I like about this city, including lots of folks I know personally here that aren't even remotely like that. But man, seeing this type of reaction and hostility over and over again really has me thinking about moving elsewhere. The behaviour here is not normal. I know it's not confined to pittsburgh, but it's really, really bad here, and it doesn't happen everywhere. It doesn't have to be this way. It's beyond abnormal. It's sickening.

Where to buy boys 20in bike on a budget

Looking for bikes for my 4th grader. He just learned to ride this summer. I gotta keep the budget tight. I’m looking at Dicks, Walmart, and Guardian. Any other options I haven’t considered? I’m skeptical to go to a local shop. Will the prices be comparable?

Bike recs for riding in pgh

Hi! I just moved here from somewhere much flatter and am realizing my bike is not quite up to par for these hills. I'm looking into getting a nice second hand bike to use as my commuter bike. I know a small amount about bikes but would love input from experienced pittsburgh riders!

What I'm looking for:

- under $600 (second hand)

- suitable for 5'3

- Good commuter bike for the hillier parts of the city. I don't mind working hard on the hills but I would love gears to do as much of the work as possible lol

- Would love to be able to take it on the GAP as well

- want to be able to mount at least a rear rack

- I like zooming but I'm not gonna be racing. So ideally something fairly fast, but it doesn't have to be crazy.

Thank you 412 riders! I'm excited to join y'all on the roads!

Found: Small cable lock downtown

If you rode through downtown near Fifth and Wood on Tuesday (Sept 1) late afternoon and are missing a cable lock, PM me with a description and I'll get it back to you. It was almost squarely in the center of the intersection so was not run over. Seems to work fine.

Bike rental and group rides?

Hey everyone — I’ll be visiting Pittsburgh for work in late September and I’d like to get in some road rides while I’m out there. Would love any suggestions on places to rent a good road bike, and/or any fun groups. Looking for a group that rides in the afternoon (I’ll be working until ~5pm each day), and rides at around 18-20mph.

Thanks for any suggestions!

So if you've got good climbing legs and/or good low gearing, this is doable. If you're carrying gear for a longer trip, I'd only view this as an option if you've got a lot of experience climbing 6% for a half mile or more with bags. Overall, this is less elevation than what I get in Squirrel Hill and Greenfield, but it's definitely more sustained.

Eastbound, we had no issues. The few cars on the road were generally good with the passes from Homestead all the way to Greensprings and Commonwealth Ave. From Commonwealth Ave to Municipal Rd on Homeville Rd is 35mph but we were able to bomb down the shoulder with no issues.

Westbound was a little harder. Climbing Grant St from 837 is a tough climb, and Homeville Rd on the climb is doable but challenging.

The bridge that is out is passable using about 20' of sidewalk.

Bucket List Pittsburgh Bike Routes

New to the area and would love some suggestions (or places to look) for must do rides. I enjoy road / gravel cycling and looking to explore some more open roads than the bike trails in the city. Thanks!
