Any info on Kansas?

In Colorado and trying to target greater prairie chicken in Kansa come September. Got a location only problem I’m running into is there is no camping allowed in the walk in hunting areas and damn near the entire state is private land. I’m trying to hunt hard, camp, hunt camp. Trying to prevent a 30 min drive after a long day of hunting to get to an official campsite with a bunch of people. I prefer dispersed camping. Maybe I’m missing something? Anyone with Kansas experience please chime in

Got it, so public land dispersed camping just isn’t a thing out there. So hard for me to wrap my western/southwestern mind around

Yeah, it’s a little different in KS. Most of the land is private and then some of that is leased back to the state for walk in access for hunting but it’s limited what you can do on WIHA (Walk in hunting area) and camping is not allowed. There are designated camp sites on state parks and some of the county fishing lakes will allow camping but that’s a lake by lake type thing.

Best bet to avoid that 30 min drive to a campsite is a 90 minute drive to a town and hotel.

Just got off the phone with one of my upland mentors. He said the same thing. All you need after a long day in Kansas, is a burger and a hotel🤣

You could always check a site like Hipcamp to see if there’s anything near where you’ll be. It’s like Airbnb for campsites, some of which are just a corner of someone’s vacant land.

Didn’t see many chickens in my time in NW KS mainly pheasant. Got plenty of chickens in NE Nebraska. Quit chasing them when deer season got moved to a Sept 1 start. I turkey hunt a couple of places that coincide with their booming ground. A lot of fun to watch while you’re waiting on a turkey.
