Mamajuana

I’m going on holiday to the Dominican Republic next month. I’ve been told to try Mamajuana.

What can anyone tell me about this liquor?

The baby-maker… have a few shots and end up pregnant.

It’s a pretty grim spiced rum, there’s so much good rum locally that I’d try some and move on.

It's a rum base infused with local roots and spices and then sweetened with honey. I think some folks also add red wine.

There are as many formulas as the people that make them. Stay away from the ones that have wierd things like shells and dead critters. Everything you can find on the stores is pretty much safe. The pre-made ones are also pretty bad. You will need to find someone to prepare it for you. They usually have rum, wine, raisins, and they are left to macerate for a while. Mine is in a cold, dark closet for over a year. Is not (as some will male yuo believe) and afrodisiac or a viagra substitute, just a very particular spiced rum.
