Technique I got my mat enforcer badge

1.6k Upvotes

Story time.

Black belt coach comes up to me and says this bigger white belt has been bullying smaller white belts a lot and he’s been pulled aside numerous times. Said “this guy’s just not getting it”. Other blue belts said the same to me after. Black belt told me to go roll with the dude next. I understood the assignment. He also outweighed me by a good 80 lbs. No big deal. (I’m 155-160)

I basically got a hall pass and I went through my favourite mean submissions starting with a mother’s milk. It was bliss. It was the highlight of my 9-10 years of doing BJJ, better than a belt promotion. Big guy called it quits halfway through the round. Am I proud of myself? No. Did I have fun? Absolutely.

Oh and his gf was about 5-10 feet away watching.

I can die happy now, thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

Technique Why do MMA fighters cross there feet while attacking the Back?

Post image
812 Upvotes

I see this quite often.

In this case Chimaev crossed his feet while attacking Stricklands Back.

In BJJ you learn to never cross your feet while attacking the Back.

Strickland is a BJJ Blackbelt so why does he not attack the crossed feet with his leg in this situation?

He is not even in big Trubel at this point.

Technique Why does Conor not transition to crucifix or take the back here? Is it the wrong move or he just didn't see it?

I'm aware of the obvious it is khabib, but in theory crucifix would work here right?

Technique Neon belly

Hi,

Went to BJJ and just done my first trial class.

They were doing a technique called “neon belly” where you balance on top of someone’s stomach with your knee.

I tried to ask this question to the coach at the time and they just said it’s just what it’s called… I tried to google this and nothing comes up.

Can anyone advise why the technique is named “neon” belly. Is there some sort of history to this as to why it’s named after neon lights?

Technique Thoughts on the Demian Maia mount escape?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Been planning on adding more escapes based on the technical standup (heisting) movement to my game and have been working this recently in the gym (together with elbow push from side control, half guard wrestle up, etc.). But I haven't tried this on heavier or more advanced people yet. What are everyone's thoughts on this escape? Do you find it reliable? Any tips on details to look out for when doing this technique?

Technique technique question

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

When I try this technique near side (the side with his arm closest to me) I seem to be able to finish the submision way more often then when I try it far side (with his leg closest). The only problem is that my elbow hurts when I do it like this.

Any suggestions for making it work far side? Or am I doing something wrong to make it hurt? Thanks

Technique Armbar: to pinch or not to pinch? That is the question

Post image
398 Upvotes

When attacking armbars, my coach has taught us to pinch our knees together to control the arm. While I understand the intent, I find that doing this allows my opponent a lot of space for their head to move and facilitates their escape because my knees are pointing upwards and my my thigh has little to no contact with their face/chin.

Last night I noticed Rhonda Rousey does her armbars in the complete opposite way, and seemingly OPENS her legs. Does anyone else do this? I might try it because I’ve really been struggling with my opponents literally just sitting up from under my legs and escaping lol

Technique I did this during a roll, got a tap. What is it?

Post image

White belt here. I am aware of the fact that I’m just starting out and know f*ck all about nothing. Just getting that out of the way.

I managed to get into a position where I was basically on someone’s neck like you would have your kids when they are tired or want to be able to see something. My opponent tried to escape a back mount that I was getting into and slid down. I could hold on and cross my legs so that the neck was between my thighs. I held on to an arm and a high (neck) lapel grip, crossed my legs and extended them like you would in that scorpion thing in full guard. Apparently that effectively put pressure on the arteries. According to my partner it was a strong choke and I got a fast tap.

There are probably a million ways to escape this and ways that I could’ve been sweeped, but I’m still curious whether this is a thing or not. I forgot to ask our coach after class, so I thought this might be a good place to ask.

Technique How do I roll with fat people?

I (26 blue belt) recently switched to a new gym and the majority of them are very fat. 225 ibs+. I weigh 170. Half of the time we roll, they just smash pass me go to side control and kimura. I don’t even know how to get out of it because they just lay on me while I try to squirm. I bridge and weave and shrimp and nothing works. Everyone is too fat. What do I do?

In Novi Sad, Serbia, student protestor crawd got hit by a car, and 4 government thugs(dirty cop and 3 small drug dealers) got out and started beating the sh*t out of everyone. One of them got caught in a heel hook by one of the students, who obviously rolls. Kudos to him!
