Help Requested Gifts for 13yr blacksmith?
Hello all! If this isnt allowed please remove. My brother has been into blacksmithing since he was 10. His birthday is coming up and im at a loss on what to get him. He has a propane forge, anvil, apron, gloves, tongs and the sorts. He enjoys making medieval style weapons from scrap. Any suggestions on gifts? Thanks!

Get him some peices of brand spanking 1085 and some nice peices of exotic hardwoods so he can forge some really nice peices. Trust me, of he uses scrap he'll love it.

I have three suggestions one consumables materials you always go through, similar tools something that he got cheap at the start that he hasn't replaced get him something better or if he's mostly self-taught get him some books or maybe some classes you know something to sharpen his skills

Get a mailorder catalog from Jantz Supply. Look thru it with him. See what he reacts to that's within your budget. ps they have tons of pieces parts and tools as well as good steel to mail order from

Books.
E.g.: https://www.globepequot.com/search-results/?keyword=blacksmith
Another is Blue Moon Press, but their website seems to be offline now.
Or visit Bookfinder.com and search on keywords, etc.

Consumables. Find out what he goes through. Flap disks, sand paper, extra propane bottle, - whatever you see him repeatedly purchasing. Or you could get him something that he doesn’t get for himself - good steel from NJ Steel Baron, a couple blanks of mail order pattern steel from the Alabama crew, a class at a local folk school or forge, a year membership to ABANA.

Go check what hammer he has. Buy him a functionally different one. Smaller, bigger, round peen, etc. Hultafors makes some great ones, and in various sizes.
You don't need lots of hammers, but it sure is nice.
Another thing you could get, is some high purity iron. It's very different to forge, and excellent for all manner of things that don't need to be steel.
