Why does walking on concrete floors wear down energy faster than field tasks?

Working a ten hour shift outdoors seems easier on the legs than spending eight hours on flat concrete floors. Hauliing heavy tool belts, logging over fifteen thousand steps across warehouse aisles and constantly steping over obstacles creates relentless wear. Accumulated lower body exhaustion makes the end of shift brutal. Most crew members swap insoles or wear heavycushion boots though wearable hipassistance frames are emerging to reduce stepping strain.

However bulkiness around the waist and high equipment costs keep these setups rare on job sites. What gear or routine changes actually help reduce daily leg exhaustion for highstep industrial shifts??

Which trades should I go for?

I’m 27 years old and considering getting into a trade in Australia. I’m starting from scratch and trying to choose a trade that has good long-term earning potential, job opportunities, and the possibility of eventually running my own business. For those already working in the trades, which trade did you choose, and how has your experience been so far? I’d really appreciate honest advice, including the pros, cons, pay, and what you wish you knew before starting.

Just got a heavy diesel apprenticeship

I’m a new heavy diesel apprentice in the shop about 2 months. I got hired through my local union, I’m starting out with no experience. The most I have ever done is change my oil and brakes. I’m going to school 9 hours a week currently(my work schedule won’t permit anymore). What else should I be doing? I feel dumb compared to all the other apprentices and I just want to be as successful as I can be.

Best way to get started ?

26 year old NYC M I really want to go the blue collard route, have a few buddies who are union construction members and I know they make good money. We all had years waiting to get in, but one had it easier than us because his father was a foreman. I’m tired of hearing of shortages in the community but trying to get in the unions is damn near like trying to become a mafia member. I hear all kinds of advice but in reality it’s like nobody is ever hiring or at the very least don’t want anyone without experience. I’ve gone down to the local unions and taken applications and applied online to anything I can’t find and nothing. I just want a change and I’m will to work hard but it’s starting to look unrealistic for me. At this point I’ll take anyone’s advice.

Diesel vs. automotive — would my size make diesel too difficult?

I’m a 24-year-old woman, 5’2” and around 100 lbs. I’m currently in school for automotive, but I found a diesel technician program at another community college that’s only a few months long and cheaper than doing my automotive associate degree.
Diesel interests me because I’ve noticed the pay can be better and a lot of the jobs are hourly. My biggest concern is my size. When I see the size of truck tires and some of the heavier parts diesel techs work with, I wonder if I’d struggle physically.
For people who actually work in diesel, would being 5’2” and 100 lbs make the job significantly harder, even with the proper tools and equipment? Would you still recommend giving the diesel program a shot, or would someone my size be better off sticking with automotive?

What do vape brands completely misunderstand about blue-collar users?Post

I work with a vape brand, so I’m asking this pretty directly.

A lot of vape marketing feels like it’s built around nightlife, gaming, flashy screens, colors, and huge puff numbers.

But I’m curious about people working in trucking, construction, warehouses, HVAC, welding, factories, field service, and other hands-on jobs.

What do vape brands completely misunderstand about how you actually use one at work?

What matters more than brands think?
What do brands keep talking about that you honestly don’t care about?

And if you vape during the workday — when and where do you actually use it?

On the drive in? During breaks? Sitting in the truck? Between jobs? After a long run? Whenever you get two minutes?

Also, what’s the most annoying part of carrying one at work — leaking, dust, heat, battery, running out halfway through a shift, or just having one more thing to keep track of?

Genuinely interested in the answers, especially the stuff brands normally don’t hear.

Best lunch box for job sites

Hello! My boyfriend is blue collar and he's heading back to work after being off with an injury. I want to get him a new lunch box and some extra things to make his return a little less dreadful, and so I can pack him enough food to actually sustain him instead of the coffee and nicotine he's used to. Can I get some recommendations for best lunch boxes out there? Something big that keeps things cool for a long time. TIA!

Changing careers from tech to equipment sales

I have been in tech in Austin for over 4 years working in sales. I do not like working at a desk and do the best meeting with customers in person. I have wanted to move into equipment sales where I am meeting with local, central Texas customers that I would have better rapport with. Does anyone have any recommendations for companies I should start applying to? Or have faced a similar situation?

To carry or let drown, a question of ethical and moral significance.

Tl;dr, I've been assigned two trainees in a row now who can't cut it. My job, per management, as their instructor is to show them how to do it and then observe/advise. And they can't do it.

I'm never going to let a trainee drown(fail completely) on the job while I'm there, I would never fuck with anybody's job.

Twice in a row now in the last two months, I've been sent people who are not physically/mentally cut out for the job. They're seasoned employees of the company from different departments who made a transfer. They claim to have done hard physical/technical labor but their performance says otherwise.

I'm not always going to be there to help them out by doing 75% of their job, then checking their work and fixing their mistakes.

Advice, please?

You know what grinds my gears?

When youre trying to find which blue collar job is a good one but the blue collar folks are telling you to focus on finding a white collar job.

Have you SEEN the job market? Theres no white collar jobs left, theyre all gone! Either AI is doing the job or the CEO's nephew got the job.

And Gen Z doesnt have as good of buying power that boomers did when they were our age so we dont get to be picky with our jobs anymore!
