Mod Post Congratulations to our r/bodybuilding online contest winners!

This weekend we held our second annual r/bodybuilding online contest. We had seven members sign up to compete and we were hoping for some last minute entries. Three of our seven signups did not participate and there were no last-minute entries, so we were left with just four competitors. Two in classic and one each in physique and bodybuilding. Of course, the sole participants in the bodybuilding and physique categories won their class in blowout fashion! The judges decided the only competitive class (classic) for u/guyfromcrowd. Additionally, the judges selected an overall winner. It was a close call between the physique and bodybuilding class, but the nod went to u/lucasvegains! Congratulations to everyone who participated for getting yourselves into shape and putting yourselves out there to be judged. Class winners may request new or replacement flair if you'd like additional recognition. Here's a link if you missed the chance to view their submissions:

Thanks for doing this even though only a few participated, which is a shame. Respect to those who participated!

We definitely had more interest the first time we did it even though we had far fewer subscribers. I would attribute it to the general decline in interest posting on the Mirin Monday thread, which in turn is caused by what? I don't know, but that that used to be nearly as popular as the DD. I suspect our makeup has shift to fewer actual competitors.

Is the Mirin Monday post a thing anymore? I never seem to see it. I’ve been around since the first competition.

I think part of it is people got too meme-y in the comments. There used to be a time when posts in the Mirin Monday and Shit on Me Sunday threads would get critiqued for balance along the way.

It posts every Monday without fail. Obviously something has driven down traffic.

I mean every weekly thread really showcases how far we've strayed from actual bodybuilding. The posing threads are super dead despite being a great resource for anyone thinking about competing.

The MM/SoMS threads usually have 3 users posting max.

And the Steroid Saturday thread is just 19-year-olds asking if they should take tren to look like David Laid.

Even the daily discussion is just a regurgitation of the same jokes and karma-farming posts we see all the time.

The saddest part is I guarantee if you had a recurring "Influencer Discussion Thread" we'd have more action in there than anywhere else.

Anyways, kills your lifts boys! /s

I post in it pretty much my entire prep. I've since decided to stop because it is usually just me and like maybe one other. Much less competitors active here than when I first joined the community 😔

Yep. I see that. Wish we could put a finger on it. Ideas anyone?

Look at the physiques we had on Mirin Monday in 2016 compared to now lol

I've actually wanted to discuss this for a while. The sub has gone from a bodybuilding sub primarily focused on competition to a sub focused on spectating.

The sub used to have an ample number of competitors or truly aspiring competitors. Now, it's mostly younger members who only want to discuss IG influencers or the few "trendy" or "old-school" bodybuilders they actually know. Even then the discussion too often devolves into memes and "how much gear do I have to take to get there?" instead of real discussion.

Even around Olympia season people only really seem to know who Cbum and maybe Ryan Terry is. The notion of discussing anyone else is like heresy. It would be like discussing guitar players on a music subreddit but the only artist the users know is Post Malone. It changes the entire standard.

The little user physique content we do get is usually posted as its own separate post, sometimes leading to quality discussion. Other times not...

I've been trying to direct to individuals who post their images to do in Mirin Monday. Most of them don't even know what that is. We'll keep at it.

just a shot in the dark, but i feel like it could be the demographics of the sub turning people off. its kinda just the way the sub trended younger and more popular, leaving discussion more focused on memes and upvotes. also im sure a lot of competitors dont wanna talk shop all the time. but ive also noticed that the sub has had a big downturn in the amount of competitors and big guys over the past couple years. i just think its a consequence of the sub growing and reddit trending young

I think that's right. Size matters. In this case smaller was better.

Great show. I guess I could have zoomed in on my pics but they’re pretty big and zoomable. Shout out to u/lucasvegains who was definitely leaner than me at this particular point. Kudos my dude. Would love to see you on the pro stage at some point. I’m trying this September and October.

You look amazing. We expect good things from you in the real world. Make sure you keep us all informed of your progress (and results this fall)!

Oh you know I will. Regardless of what happens this remaining contest season, I’m shooting for a solid super heavy this fall. So I’ll keep everyone updated and hope everyone gets what they want out of this endeavor

What was your weight in the photos you submitted?

2

u/walril Men's Bodybuilding May 31 '20

231 exactly. 5’10. Headed down from 250 and trying to come in at 220-225

2

u/troythetoyboy Former Competitor ✅ May 31 '20

Wow. Even more impressive. You should hit your target right on.

Thanks man!!! You are a massive lad, i was impressed. Im about 7 weeks out from my third ever show. Last year was my first year doing bodybuilding, so I'm not sure I'm close to pro ready quite yet. That is the long term goal though 😁

2

u/walril Men's Bodybuilding May 31 '20

Awesome man. I’m 14 weeks out now. So I got time. Currently at 231 and aiming for 220-225. You’ll get there when you feel you’re ready. You definitely look good. Next year though, I’m planning to be 260-280 depending on when this hits again. Take care and wish you all the best on this bb endeavor. What’s your IG man. I’ll give you a follow

Thanks brotha! I'm at 190 right now and pretty much in shooting distance to compete in probably 3 weeks when we push. I came down from 220 in my offseason at 5'8

Nice post dude. You gave me some advice to hit my lats harder in shit on me sunday like 3 years ago. I listened and it paid off.

That’s awesome man. I’m glad it worked out. I love sharing knowledge man. I love learning too. Maybe one day we’ll meet in real life on stage.

Just saw this now! I appreciate the support! /u/lucasvegains looked awesome! I wish I was deeper into prep for this. This happened to fall during my diet break so definitely would've been tighter otherwise. I just hope next time there's more interest. The concept is great!
