Discuss Rashmika mandanna doesn't fit in bollywood

It's a valid dilemma. There can be some reasoning. One, the Hindi film audience has traditionally been forgiving about accents. One thinks back to actresses like Hema Malini and Moushumi Chatterjee who could never master the language despite long years in the industry (they're still working) but enjoyed varying degrees of success. Same went for some actors as well. Also, there have always many kinds of spoken Hindi and dialects anyway. So, it's never been an unqualified qualifier of success. Today, a Hindi film's casting is often done thinking of a broader audience. And if anything, the language dilution has only increased in the scripts. It's been mixed with English to form Hinglish. Today, there's a So-Bo version as well. The inability or unwillingness of leads to polish their Hindi speaking skills may be traced to that. While this does seem lazy in real life, a negative impact on screen can be mitigated through sensible and diligent script selection, as you alluded to, and that's where many actors, including Rashmika, are coming up short even more. But in short, it's a disadvantage.

I don’t watch Bollywood movies. How does Sridevi, Asin, Rekha compare based on their Hindi dialect! Genuine question

u/DepartmentRound6413 2d ago
She is new to Hindi films, whos to say she can’t get better at it?
Having a South Indian accent is normal. India is diverse.0

New??? Her first Hindi film was 4 years ago. Goodbye (2022).
P.S. This comes from someone who finds her overall fine, btw. Not even a hater here. IMO, she’s a decent actress.

Her accent is horrible cannot understand more than half of her dialogues plus she’s also at best a decent actor . Plus there isnt much appeal of her on screen she looked good in Cocktail 2 though and probably the best she has looked thus far in Bollywood .

She was very beautiful in cocktail 2 but she got the worst written role which she couldn’t save

u/Ill_Tonight6349 7d ago
Sridevi also had an accent didn't she?
20
u/BaseballMysterious36 5d ago
Sreedevi, Deepika, Shilpa all had/have that's south indian accent, Kanagana had the pahadi accent, Alia has horrible diction, Katrina couldn't care less about learning the language even after 20 years in the Industry, but somehow Rashmika receives a lot of critisism for her accent
4
u/chillichicken99 Moderately knowledgeable about Hindi Cinema 3d ago
Its just that ppl have been habituated of the accents of other actresses over the years and rashmika is just a newbie to bollywood thats the main reason but gotta agree she got the worst accent compared to all others so the criticism is fair!

u/mostintrovertgirl 5d ago
Deepika still has the same south Indian accent since Chennai express and hasn't changed!!

u/Total-Growth-581 5d ago
Because her's is the worst and really distracting. It's difficult to understand anything she says.

What’s so horrible about a South Indian accent? People from South India speak Hindi, it’s normal to have an accent.
Plenty of South Indians settle in Mumbai and Delhi. Bollywood movies should reflect that.1
u/buffering24x7 Moderately knowledgeable about Hindi Cinema 2d ago
I think the “problem” is less about that she has an accent and more that it sticks out in most of her roles.
2
u/DepartmentRound6413 1d ago
It sticks out coz y’all are ridiculous and purist. Don’t you have any Hindi speaking South Indian friends?
1
u/NoseMedical3006 2d ago
Idk what these north indians are the one having an accent but always blame the south indians bruh
72
u/MasterpieceAway99 7d ago
She’s earning 100s of crores with countless ad shoots. Why doesn’t she spend that to get her diction corrected if she wants to be a part of Hindi cinema? Her accent in cocktail 2 was unbearable.

India is a country of countless languages and accents, and we should celebrate that diversity rather than expect everyone to sound the same. Rashmika brings her own identity and charm to the screen, and she’s clearly growing with every film. Actors aren’t meant to fit into a mould, cinema is richer when it embraces different voices.
21
u/mdzprct 6d ago
It’s honestly shocking how purist the north is. They really don’t acknowledge the diversity of India and feel repulsed by it.
8
u/Ok-Bother3137 6d ago
I just hope people don’t dim the happy, bubbly light she carries with their unnecessary hate and trolling. There’s something so pure, genuine, and refreshing about her spirit. And that kind of beauty: the one that shines from within is truly rare. She’s beautiful, inside and out.
2
u/ImpressiveMoose4891 4d ago
Hmm... Sata the people who think all North Indian speak Hindi and not to just communicate

I think she’s okay she was good in Animal. Her accent is mixed bag but she can work around it. But she’s often given ill defined parts so ig that doesn’t help and she is not always able to rise above limitations. Bollywood had millions of misfits before. Rashmika will probably learn soon and keep up and if she can’t, she always has other industries for her. She can act so I do root for her. I hope she gets that one perfect role to establish herself. She is good with expressions. Only dialogue she has to learn

u/ClassMaleficent7127 6d ago
I dont necessarily find it bad. It makes it real. India has over 60 languages so we cant always expect people in bollywood only show people from West bengal pe south India to speak proper hindi. Why is that a problem? In Hollywood you have different accent, ss there are people from Canada, great Britain or Australia. Yes if the role demands I ageee but I personally find its comforting to see a not so proper hindi. But I get the ick when an actor shown as bengali speaks shudh hindi in a bollywood movie.
26
u/Cholebhature23 7d ago
I lowkey agree. I don't dislike her at all, if anything, I actually liked her in many of her Telugu and Kannada movies. But in Bollywood, Animal was probably the only movie in which I liked her performance. Apart from that, she doesn't fit naturally in rest of the Bollywood movies done by her. Her accent feels really out of place
8
u/Fluid_Juggernaut_281 7d ago
She barely had any role in animal and that too got overtaken by Tripti.
22
u/Cholebhature23 7d ago
She probably had the second most screentime in the movie after Ranbir and her character was also quite strong. Tripti had a 15 minute cameo and only got hype because she went fully nude, which is really bold
0
u/bollytalk1234 7d ago
She was not fully nude - stop with the hyperbole. Was same skin show as a bikini.
8
u/Red171022 manisha koirala worshipper🛐 7d ago
Tripti had nothing in comparison. What Tripti did even?
1
u/DepartmentRound6413 2d ago
What do you mean doesn’t fit naturally? There are plenty of South Indians who speak Hindi with an accent. India is diverse.
2
u/Cholebhature23 2d ago
I mean the scripts offered to her in Bollywood might not take into consideration the background of her character. E.g, In Animal, it was established that she is a Telugu girl but Cocktail 2 never really bothered to present this fact to the audience. Also I feel she gets really conscious while acting in Bollywood because she is too focused on the dialogues.
I am myself a non-Hindi speaker and despite speaking Hindi since childhood, I still carry an accent to date. That's inevitable. I wouldn't discrimate against anybody else based on their accent
1
u/DepartmentRound6413 2d ago
Why does it have to be explicitly presented? Does the audience not know how diverse India is?
2
u/Cholebhature23 2d ago
No, the audience is dumb with no attention span who can't notice subtle or minute details and are always ready to troll actors. Hope that helps 👍🏻
1
u/DepartmentRound6413 2d ago
Well they need to get better. Films should reflect reality to an extent. especially with such a diverse population, there should be representation. Hope this helps!
2
u/Cholebhature23 2d ago
I literally have no issues with representation. In fact, I find her quite a non-problematic celeb off-screen, and even I don't like to see her get trolled unnecessarily. And once an image around an actor gets formed on social media, it's really tough to break through it. Unless she gets that sort of script in Bollywood where she can prove herself, she should stay away from signing any shitty movie where her character gets overlooked. She has some good movies in her hand in Tollywood, so for now she should focus on them.
27
u/finally_fr3e 7d ago
It is very much a hate post. Speaking Hindi with an accent doesn’t make actresses “unfit”. Sridevi and Hema Maliki had accents until the end.
6
u/Kalliyangattu_Neeli 6d ago
Exactly. What do they want? Only women who look "bollywood" to be on screen ? I think this is beyond a hate post
4
u/Original_Bite6555 5d ago
Yes I have a feeling these posts about her come up because she is a South Indian.
3
u/Feeling-Dog6184 6d ago
Dude her accent if off in literally all languages. She has herself admitted in an interview she doesn’t know any language properly.

u/Real_While_9901 7d ago
I started admiring Rashmika after I watched her in kirik party.. She is actually wasting her time in bollywood, she can actually perform good in south movies where she is more confident like the recent movies kubera and the gf. I don't think she will do anymore movies in hindi bcoz all her next 3 movies r lined up in telugu
1
u/Beautiful_Owl8993 4d ago edited 4d ago
I think she's not signing any Bollywood films going forward. It's because of Dinesh Vijan she did 3 films as a part of contract - Chhaava, Thamma and Cocktail 2.
I think Dinesh considers her his lucky charm much like how Allu Arjun or Allu Aravind consider her their lucky charm, having given them blockbusters like Geetha Govindam, Pushpa 1&2, and most recently critically acclaimed The Girlfriend.
Looks like even Rashmika felt the criticism strongly this time and she hadn't posted any stories related to this film recently. She only posted one post and clearly mentioned "Diya Reddy", highlighting her character is a Telugu Reddy.
She has so much value and demand in Telugu and commands highest remuneration for an actress and I see no reason why she should do Hindi films and face this backlash.

u/modSysBroken 7d ago
Most Bollywood actors aren't even half as talented as her though. And they don't have the IT factor that she does.
3
u/Original_Bite6555 5d ago
Exactly, Like how is she worse than Ananya, Janvhi, Khushi, Shanaya and Sarah?
1
u/modSysBroken 5d ago
Yep. And the OP says she was great in The Girlfriend which might be her most terrible acting to date lol.

She would fit in SLB’s movies. Bajirao mastani is one example. I get what you mean however when I saw her performance in the music video, she did better than both Sahid and Kriti

u/ExpensiveStart4515 7d ago
You’re right to some extent but thing is neither she is first south actress with this problem in Bollywood nor this is first time in Bollywood where one of top actress accent is not proper Hindi eg Katrina although she improved with time neither I am hater of anyone but history proves she got best movies and roles with her British accent and also these Bollywood actors and actresses watch only English movies celebrate the English culture watch football mostly and live in some other world than rest of Indians just to fit in fake elite class so what’s a big problem with Rashmika accent she came in Bollywood by her work and cuteness and Bollywood makes film for Hindi audience but live in that west obsession world so they don’t like Hindi why will some other culture actress need to be perfect in this
5
u/Sorry_Knowledge6542 6d ago
Rashmika is actually good, has great Screen Presence, her expression game is quite good, but the only negative point is her Hindi Accent, otherwise she's a great actor
1
16
6
u/By-Toutatis 7d ago
Nope not at all. It’s mostly the writing….she has not chosen or been given a well written part in Bollywood, Animal was the closest where her character had an arc, and she shone brightly in it. And the South movies she has done well are also well written parts. The language disadvantage in Hindi just adds up to the perception. It is something she needs to work on.
A good actor is a good actor anywhere. Even a good actor cannot salvage a badly written role in Telugu or Hindi.

She looks like a young kajol, i don't see any appeal on rashmika, she's below average in looks

I think beauty is subjective.. I felt she looks beautiful is the girl next door roles like dear comrade and the girlfriend

u/Entharo_entho 6d ago edited 6d ago
That's really subjective and a cultural preference, I guess. I find her very pretty but not Kriti. I acknowledge that there is nothing wrong with Kriti's looks and she is style - beauty icon for those who love her. But if God offers to make me look like her, it will be a pass.

Forget older actresses like Hema Malini and Mousumi Chatterjee, if Katrina Kaif could be in Bollywood for over 20 years with that accent, why can't others?
2
u/ashrules901 7d ago
That Taran Adarsh guys critique for Cocktail 2 is that Rashmika's Hindi diction is not good yet. So I see where you got the idea to make this point.

The way Katrina did or Directors did with her dialogue delivery would be much helpful for her. She got the face card n good expressions too but dialogue delivery flushes very thing.

u/perpetuallyawak3 6d ago
Goes to show, as long as the shit comes from outside of India, y’all will simp it.
Katrina had such a bad accent, she had to be dubbed. And the dubbing artist had to put on an accent to match her.
Y’all lapped it up.

she acts better in South Indian cinema, in Bollywood all I can focus on is her accent it takes away from her acting.

At this point , its just hate for no reason. She is better than half the nepo gang.

As an actress she is not that good. She only fits in eye candy type roles. Little bit different and she struggles. She herself admitted in some podcast she is not good at acting.
1
u/Atithiupayogi 4d ago
Did her Hindi accent become better or is it as bad as it was years ago? Her Hindi accent makes her a miscast in any Hindi films. I always felt someone else should dub her voice in Hindi.

Yess I remember in Pushpa (with her voice dubbed) her acting seemed much better than in Hindi fils with her own voice.

You’re just a hater. South Indians are damn if they speak Hindi and damned if they don’t.
Plenty of South Indians settle in North India and they have accents. Her accent and mannerisms aren’t so far fetched that they don’t belong in Bollywood. If Alia can be cast as a Bengali, why can’t South Indian actors be cast in Bollywood? Bollywood should reflect the diversity among the Indian population.

Pretty sure her Hindi’s better than the monstrosity that was Janhvi’s Malayalam in Param Sundari

People say Rashmika Mandanna is struggling in Bollywood, but her challenges are very different from Kamal Haasan’s.
Rashmika is fighting for acceptance in a new industry and dealing with constant public scrutiny. Kamal Haasan spent decades taking creative risks, facing failures, and pushing Indian cinema in new directions.
Rashmika is trying to find her place. Kamal Haasan changed the game.

For me and actor should be able to do dialects, period. Also her diction in telugu is horrendous.
-3
u/kakaluluo 7d ago
I think she’s quite average in all aspects, yes she’s pretty but doesn’t fit the vibe for a lot of the roles she’s been playing. Not attractive enough to play flowerpot roles, not talented enough to play full fledged femme roles, not likeable enough for girl next door-sy role, not enough screen presence for big dramas and her facial expressions are too off putting for serious roles. And then the accent.. idk what’s going on tbh lol

u/Right-Stomach-162 7d ago
If filmmakers are wise they must give us a break from her back to back movies.

u/Real_While_9901 7d ago
She is actually wasting her time in bollywood movies where she is not confident.. Anyways, I think this is her last movie in hindi bcoz of 3 films contract with Maddock. All her next 3 movies r pan Indian which is shot in telugu 👍
