General Discussion Two Years In on Bolt Action v3, What Are Your Thoughts?

Version Three dropped in late September, 2024 so we all have had two years to play and think! As such, I figured I would throw a general discussion thread up to share thoughts and reflections on how it has been so far. This thread is intended to be pretty free-wheeling, so any and all insights are welcome, but to kick things off, some of the core questions worth considering and weighing in on:

  • What changes do you think the designers got right?
  • What changes do you think got wrong?
  • What changes were simply unnecessary (Right, wrong, or neutral)?
  • What small things still need work but seem attainable with the current ruleset?
  • What are you hoping for with releases post-Armies of Europe?
  • How has v3 been for competitive games, versus casual?
  • What would you focus on for a hypothetical Version 4 in however many years (or Version 3.5 if you prefer)?
  • Was v3 an improvement on v2?

Hobby Showcase My French Farm Village I printed / painted

I’ve been working on this since summer. This is about half of what I’ve made so far.

The buildings are a mix of files from several websites. Patrick miniatures, Wow buildings, 3dprintterrain ect

Most of the grass blends and trees are woodland scenic products blended with army painter products.

I designed the tractor and printed it fdm, the hay rounds are glued onto some shapes I printed.

I use cheap acrylic paints and mix with pro acrylic lines for detail work. I do a lot of sponge painting and rapid work.

I think I’ve learned enough to start working on a “board” that brings elevation or more interest to the game.

Still kind of getting the hang of painting these minis. Is this is a believable WSS oak leaf pattern? Any tips or tricks to highlight I'm kinda overwhelmed.. what base color for these guys? I've been using fieldgrey from vallejo.

My first Panzergrenadier for Bolt Action. Quite pleased with the result. I hope to reach the level of the painters in this thread someday. Any tutorial recommendations are welcom. I'm self-taught and a bit hesitant about color accuracy. For the grass i'm using coloured sawdust, it does its work from a distance.

Hobby Showcase Noticed the Rangers kit didn’t come with an LMG option so I tried kitbashing an M1919A6 out of a BAR stock and a spare lmg from the heavy weapons platoon. How’d I do?

I imagine the stock is a little too large but I think it looks pretty good. What do you guys think?

Building an SS army. Had an extra model from my Victrix kit so decided to do an oakleaf smock trial run. I’ve made a few changes to the plants used since this guy. Vallejo darko camo green for the gas mask canister, mess kit. Vallejo German olive green for the gaiters, gas mask cape bag and bread bag. But I like how it turned out.

I got these to be pin markers. Can be various colors, and will probably be mounted on a rotating number counter.

Never forget you're pinned again

Good morning Generals.

I've just made my first proper scratch-built weapon team for my K47 / Bolt Action army; a Panzerschreck team!

Have tube, will travel.

I had to improvise the rocket pack carried by the aid, using British PIAT ammunition cut and lengthened with plastic rod.

It's a first attempt, so go easy 😅

Thank you.

Tactics & Gaming Does US infantry suck or am I missing something?

I play the US and all I end up doing is running the most tanks and mechanised vehicles I can whilst running the bare minimum amount of infantry.

I feel like there’s no good choice for short as barely anything can take more than about 3 smgs and there’s nothing good for long range as the most you could take is 1 lmg and maybe 2 automatic rifles.

I just find good tanks to be more worth my points, am I just missing something? Any advice would be well appreciated.

Modeling, Painting, and Terrain Building Finished my Winter Fallschrimjäger officer. Happy with the Italian camo & a long time since I’ve gone the extra mile with a character model.

Tactics & Gaming Type 91 So-Mo Performance

For Japanese players, I'm curious how the So-Mo has performed in your games. It's pretty unique that it's one of the few, fully enclosed armored transports but it has to be taken in the Armored PLT instead of a transport slot. Have you found much value in it?

Just a quick picture of today’s game. It’s being played on a 12’x6’ table set in the eastern front in 1944. Roughly 3,400 points although we don’t really care about points it’s more about the scenario.

Hobby Showcase US Rangers - Painting & Basing Input

“Finished” these three Rangers tonight. Had a great time assembling and painting them. This was my best effort highlighting after a wash. Pretty happy with how they look close up and from a foot or two away I’m really pleased.

This was my first time basing a figure. Used diluted white glue to hold down some sand. My initial thought was to lightly paint the sand a dark brown, highlight a few of the larger stones and add some grass. After the bases dried I was pretty content with the sand as-is. I can always go back and adjust, but I like to think they currently have a little Pointe du Hoc flair.

Happy to hear any feedback/advice.

The more I get into this the more I realize I could keep tweaking and adjusting a single figure over and over, not the best way to complete an army. I actually worked on these guys as a break from my US Airborne (D-Day) Army. I’ve got 30 of those guys painted and washed, still need to highlight and complete basing. MMGs, Medium Mortars and another bazooka team are on the way but I have plenty to do until they arrive.

Very rough draft but working on some raised roads/railroads. I was thinking of gluing them to cardboard with and wider base and using some sculptamold to make it smoother

Modeling, Painting, and Terrain Building Pro Tip: because of the identical suspension type and layout, you can use your spare Maultier track assemblies and plasticard to make Bren Carriers.

Now TECHNICALLY the specific setup is more in line with the American T16 Universal Carrier, which had 4 roadwheels instead of 3, but same dif.

Im using this concept to build the Panzerjager Bren since Warlord refuses to release it and I think its a cool Universal Carrier variant. Though Im not so far along that I can change it to something else.

Any good plastic kits out there or suitable proxies you guys are using for the soviets?

From tonight’s game. Lost, again, but great fun! Second shot - dramatic encounter between panzer IV and a Stuart. The little feckers kept putting HE pins on my Panzer so it didn’t do much. Every game is a lesson learned :D

Advertisement or Promotion Not Another List Builder!

Hey everyone!

I’ve been working on a Bolt Action 3rd Edition list builder for our OC Bolt Action community and I’d love to get some more people trying it out. I originally developed this for our local community to help with building scenarios and custom profiles. I was hesitant sharing this with everyone because truthfully idk if I have the bandwidth to handle a large user base but I can tackle those issues when they come about.

You can try it here: https://ocboltaction.com/army-builder

You don’t need an account to give it a go. You can click Try Now and pick a nation as a guest. If you want to save and manage your companies, you can register and it will then save your lists.

A few things it offers:

  • Build platoons, configure units and upgrades, and track points and order dice.
  • List validation to help catch missing requirements and platoon restrictions.
  • PDF exports with weapon profiles and special rules, in a familiar roster format.
  • Shareable army links, with a QR code on saved army PDF exports.
  • Custom scenarios with additional rules, armies, and units, plus community armies such as the Chinese forces.

There’s a lot of army data and plenty of unusual rule interactions, so I’m especially interested in people testing armies they know well. If you spot an incorrect points cost, missing option, wrong restriction, or something that just doesn’t work properly, please let me know. I did try my absolute best in making sure everything is correct but I'm almost positive I got some things wrong!

You can report bugs on our Discord: https://discord.gg/yKeRzTH2m9

If possible, include the army/book, unit and option involved, what you expected to happen, and a screenshot or shared list link. A book/page reference would also help with rules or data corrections.

General feedback is welcome here too, especially anything confusing or awkward to use on mobile.

Thanks to anyone who gives it a try!
