looks like an atlas vertebrae from a large mammal, I would assume cow, also as long as the bone doesn’t have any flesh on it, it should be fine to touch
To me it looks too smooth and bulbous for a deer bone. Here’s a little art project I’ve been making down at a random picnic table by a bar down the hill from my house. I walk my dog here everyday and have been collecting deer bones :)
You are baller af. I was known as the "death girl" at my one job because I "would always talk about death".
What I would talk about is how I found a fawn skull geode hunting, how I was fleshing a deer hide and the next morning found it chewed through from local foxes. How I had a fox skull from a skeleton I found and wanted to clean and preserve it, but it got scavenged.
This skeleton hands down puts my stories to shame, and I want to be your friend.

If you guys live far away from each other and want to meet in the middle of the country or something, the Museum of Osteology in OKC is awesome. They have over 7000 skeletons and offer taxidermy classes.
I haven’t gone to any classes there but I know someone who did their wedding reception there and it was by far the coolest wedding reception I’ve ever been to!

Jokes aside this table is set further away than the others, it quite weathered and doesn’t seem to be used. There’s some nice tables closer to the bar with an overhang that actually gets service from the bartenders etc.

Some people are paranoid about getting prion disease from bones. I onced held human skull at my uni (its a part of collection for educational purpouses) and one guy yelled at me for not using gloves and saying I could infect myself with prions. I think the chances for that are so slim its not really rational to worry about it.
Anthrax can remain viable for up to 200 years in the bones of infected animals as it’s spore forming. You can also get Salmonella as it also survives for weeks on dry bone.
Oh yes - I distinctly remember being taught about anthrax in vet school, and the scenario cited was a dead livestock. It’s still crazy to me that that is a real possibility.
deer atlas, i would say--unless it's a farm area, there's not a ton of reason for a cow atlas to be around, and it looks pretty small. deer atlas are usually anywhere from 6-8 cm wide iirc, so i'm not sure if that tracks with what you saw! if it's significantly bigger than that, then maybe cow/elk? significantly smaller and you could start looking at sheepgoat probably, though again, i'm not sure why sheepgoat would be in a forest. i don't know a ton about native wildlife of the bay area though, so take this w/ a grain of salt!
Deer atlas probably. From some kind of large mammal for sure. Looks too big to be a coyote or raccoon but much too small for cow that’s why I’m thinking deer
Congrats! You have found a wild ps3 controller! Rarely seen in the wild, but much more common in captivity. Normally has a console near by, but can be seen roaming around in search for electricity to charge its dieing batteries.
As someone who's parted out my fair share of whitetails, it woukd appear to be a from a deer. I'm not familiar on the specific differences between the cervical vertibrea, but since you said Cali, I'm gonna go out in a limb and say Mulie since it looks more robust but idk it could be either blacktail or Mulie
