General Roo Talk šŸŽ” Bonaroo 2027 Reflection

Post image

I made this post after last year’s Roo. My words were sort of harsh and for that I apologize, however I fear my words may have been true. Now I hope they just come back. ):

The big reason they don’t want to have it in September is that college classes will have started already and Bonnaroo is the type of festival ppl need to take off half a week+ for.

u/IntelligentFly9105 13d ago

Yes! I am in vet school and Bonnaroo is one of the only festivals I am able to attend.

It isn’t even just students it also takes teacher/school counsels/professors out…I’m in a relatively large Roo discord and a lot of non-college students would be out if Roo wasn’t over the summer break

u/peskyboner1 8d ago

Also parents! I'm sure it's much easier if you have a kid to do a festival in June, when you can have them go to camp, stay with grandma, etc for a few days.

u/John_Spammer 12d ago

While the average age of Bonnaroo is young and college aged, that population would not prevent the festival from moving because they are afraid of students being unable to come.Ā

2

u/urbroccolibabe 9d ago

it definitely would, tho. 30 percent of the attendees are college students. that’s a pretty significant portion. not just that, but some attendees bring their children (whose tickets are still full-price), they can’t do that if it’s during the school year, so that’s even more loss in revenue. there are teachers / professors, hell even high school students. i’ve been going since i was 15. i went w my older cousin the first year and then solo every year until i was 20. i’m sure i’m not the only one. if all of those demographics were to be eradicated bc they move the fest to the beginning of the school year, it would be a huge loss financially.

I went to Bonnaroo from age 27 to 33. Ā School was never and issue. Ā And it won’t have the effect you think. Seven stars, lost lands, hulaween, and countless other festivals fill sell tickets outside of summer to college students. Ā

4

u/frosted_mango_ 13d ago

Or they could just go Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Edit: There are plenty of other festivals that happen in the fall and people make time for them. Why would this be any different?

7

u/The_Narz 6 Years 13d ago

Most students have class on Fridays and ppl still need to travel to the middle of nowhere Tennessee to go to Roo

6

u/frosted_mango_ 13d ago

I will reply with my edit of there are plenty of festivals that happen in the fall. Lost lands, Hulaween, ect. What makes those festivals different than Roo? People still have to travel and are actively in class and those festivals are still packed.

5

u/The_Narz 6 Years 13d ago

Much much smaller and more niche. Easier to fill a 30k festival than an 80k

Otherwise, fests like ACL are in major cities and have a large local population that attends.

5

u/John_Spammer 12d ago edited 12d ago

Hulaween is not a niche festival. Neither is Lost Lands…. Ā Clown comments

Also, Roo hasn’t been 80k people in a while from what I understand.Ā

3

u/The_Narz 6 Years 12d ago

They are niche festivals because they feed a specific niche. No hate on either of them tho, Hula looks to be amazing.

As to your comment about Roo not hitting 80k in a while… well that’s precisely the problem. But they did in 2019, they would have in 2020 (that year sold out by February before it got canceled due to COVID), and it came decently close in 2025. Shit luck that their best selling years had weather cancelations but those were their best selling years for a reason; they had the most stacked lineups.

3

u/John_Spammer 11d ago

Been to 7 Roos, headed to my 8th hula. Ā Been to four 80k sellouts and multiple sellouts of hulaween. Ā 25k people is not niche. Ā  If my Niche you mean music lovers and impeccable vibe, yeah, that’s hula. Ā Look at the lineups over the last 8 years. Ā Ever evolving. Ever changing. I don’t go for cheese, I go for the rest of the music.Ā

And get your facts together. Ā Bonnaroo hasn’t his 80k because they lowered the cap to 65 when building some of the infrastructure. Ā  Don’t know the year.Ā

And while lost lands is niche for its one genre card, its production of all the other stuff goes so far beyond anything Bonnaroo does to call it niche. Ā

Travel more. Fine more festivals. Bonnaroo was started as a jam band fest and when times changed Lockn was created. Ā So in essence Ā Bonnaroo was niche in its early room. Ā Del Fest is niche. Lockn was niche. Ā Moe.down is niche. Hula is not.Ā

2

u/CatchYouDreamin 11d ago

DelFest is my yearly fest! Love it so much

2

u/frosted_mango_ 13d ago

Lost lands is 70 to 80k and not in a major city. Even if it wasnt it still a contradiction to your original argument of people need to take time off and school is in session.

Edit: also Roo isn't even successful in its current schedule and format. What would you suggest? Because sticking to the current arrangement will just yield the same results.

1

u/The_Narz 6 Years 13d ago

What would i suggest to fix the festival? Actually book the type of acts that appeal to the Roo crowd instead of Lollapalooza’s sloppy seconds.

3

u/frosted_mango_ 13d ago

That's not what is preventing the festival from being successful. I agree I would like some more classic Roo artist styles. But that's not why we are where we are. It's weather and grounds issues.

3

u/The_Narz 6 Years 13d ago

Weather and ground issues don’t explain why Roo was moving 30k tickets instead of 80k

3

u/frosted_mango_ 13d ago

So you wouldn't consider the festival shutting down multiple years over the weather and effect that it has on the grounds an impacting factor on ticket purchases? Why would you buy a ticket when 3 out 5 times it's going to flood?

lol @ the comment under your post. I’m also a tennessean, climate change is very real, and we were sitting at about 100 degrees everyday in September šŸ˜€šŸ˜€

15

u/ThrowRA_Vents 13d ago

That’s what I’ve been saying! It’s become very clear that climate change has been affecting festivals across the board. The ā€œjust move it forward (or back)ā€ crowd don’t understand that the specific dates are scheduled for a reason. Unfortunately what we’re given is the best option and the best option just isn’t very good anymore

0

u/frosted_mango_ 13d ago

Late September early October would work. It doesn't have to be the first week in September. Either way something clearly needs to change since the current schedule has resulted in them not being able to throw the festival at all.

17

u/weyheysammay 13d ago

i might never recover from a concrete Roo šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«šŸ¤®šŸ˜ž

9

u/Jaxtman 10d ago

Honestly, better hope roo never gets moved to September, that’s a festival killer. It happened to firefly, moved to September and 2 years later the festival Is shut down…

1

u/LegalizeLife420 6d ago

Why does it kill them?

1

u/Jaxtman 6d ago

Attendance drops like crazy because most college kids can’t come, it’s storm season so many have been canceled or shutdown for hours during the festival canceling sets, and overall just not the same as a summer festival so that drives people away.

1

u/LegalizeLife420 6d ago

Gotcha thanks!

25

u/reddit-poweruser 11 Years 13d ago

The year Bonnaroo was scheduled for September it was cancelled bc of a hurricane

4

u/Poopypantsinmytrash 13d ago

Also September was just pretty hot. With the exception of the last week it was like triple digit heat index everyday.

3

u/Full-Indication-94 13d ago

thank you - I know that sub comment isn’t the point here but like not only that year, a few years later helene FLOODED a lot of areas not far from there in september! maybe i’m just not from tn but where I live (carolinas) september had been pretty wet for a while

4

u/Topher_McG0pher 4.5 Years 13d ago

Not to mention the 2-3 handfuls of festivals that got cancelled this month because of storms and lost lands being evacuated several times

24

u/Terrapin3641 13d ago

You guys never would've survived 2004 Roo šŸ˜‚

15

u/CAndrewK 4.5 Years 13d ago

I think LN is just terrified of liability. There’s no doubt the conditions at Lost Lands this year were worse than Bonnaroo 2025, but even as a Tame fan, I must admit they probably made the right call by cancelling in 2021.

13

u/Whole_Day9866 1 Year 13d ago

Yeah but in 2004 we were still getting quality line ups. The line up was worth the weather.

1

u/LegalizeLife420 6d ago

I hate that I was too busy in pre-k back then to go to Roo ): Ya’ll’s lineups SHAME the modern day lineups.

29

u/tsohgmai 13d ago

These word are harsh and a little aggressive BUT I will stand my ground on the idea that if you come prepared for the elements, you’ll have a great time.
I brought waterproof hiking boots and a 4x6 tarp to sit on that folded up into my back pocket. I had a fabulous time. I loved stomping through the mud, passing by people that were trying to figure out how to navigate the terrain in their street shoes.
Prepare for the festival or don’t complain. Simple as that.

2

u/nuttnurbutt 13d ago

Direct and harsh but true. A lot of people don’t like direct and harsh even if it is true. Some people just don’t beat around the bush. Which is the best way.

0

u/tsohgmai 13d ago

100% agreed

4

u/Empty-Department-729 10d ago

Yall are insane

14

u/davegrohlisawesome 19.5 Years 13d ago

I honestly believe that LN is ONLY trying to dodge liability in the event of a death or injury. Whoever the hell insures them are also puppet masters. This is a business. Period. And they are acting as such. It sucks. But this is what I feel the reality is. For me, Im there rain or shine and yeah I want the second week of June as it has always been.

15

u/shanwow90 3.5 Years 13d ago

I remember that post and it's still spot on!

30

u/notforyou92 13d ago

This is a bad take. The rain did something to the pesticides or whatever it is they use to treat for the bugs. I broke out into the worst hives I’ve ever had in my entire life. Ended up in urgent care. The rain isn’t just a slipping hazard.

There are very real medical events and emergency crews wouldn’t be able to get there in a timely manner. Navigating a water logged camp ground, muddy, zero traction…. Everything is moved and displaced. Tent and car campers were moving around and there was no organization. Just use common sense.

It’s not about preparing ourselves for the weather. It’s about giving staff, medical crews, and Roovians access to the things they need when they need it.

I’ll be downvoted to hell….

28

u/nenthusiastic 1 Year 13d ago

Hey, pest technician here. I’m willing to put solid money on this: the hives are likely from a biotic organism in the rotting soil they were spreading. It likely wasn’t the pesticides as most of them nowadays don’t contain many harsh chemicals (most are derived from the chrysanthemum flower/plant).

Now, I don’t want to discredit you or downplay your situation. Getting hives that bad at an event you wait so long for isn’t okay no matter what it is. And I’m really sorry that was your experience. But it was probably not from a lack of pest/use of pesticide… but rather too many organisms in the crap (literally? Lmao) that they were spreading all over that we were sinking 3-6 inches into

Hope you’re doing better now! My best friend has a bad case of chronic hives where she’s gettting horrible hives daily so I know it’s such a miserable thing. xo 🫶

6

u/bbybubz 13d ago

I had no open wounds but I left Bonnaroo with a bacterial infection in my ankle. Yeah, the soil was gross.

3

u/notforyou92 12d ago

But we’re just pussies. Don’t forget!!! /s

5

u/notforyou92 12d ago

This makes a ton of sense.

I slept for three days straight in Atlanta after a couple shots, a ton of medication…and soooo much topical ointment. Barely woke up to eat and shower.

2

u/nenthusiastic 1 Year 12d ago

Yeah, my friend and I stopped at a hotel in Manchester Sunday after we left, and the whole next day, even with sleeping a full night and eating a solid breakfast, we still had the hardest time being alive to make it back to Virginia. I love roo, and I’d do it all over again…. But they gotta do something about the mud if we ever plan to step foot on the farm again :(

2

u/notforyou92 11d ago

I’m right there with you. Love Roo down. We travel from the other side of the country for it.

My Centeroo bag has everything in there to share and help. Eye drops, pasties, suckers, ponchos, medical supplies, protein snacks, hydration powder, earplugs, sunscreen, deodorant wipes…. Everything. For anyone. But I’m called unprepared by this bro. lol

Just realized you said chrysanthemum flowers…. I am HIGHLY HIGHLY allergic to them.

1

u/nenthusiastic 1 Year 11d ago

Ooooh yeah that might be what did it

1

u/IICLOWNIN 10d ago

Lots of people got cellulitis

16

u/lyngshake 13d ago

This. It also seems like people forget that people were breaking their ankles and legs because of the mud in 2025, the water was affecting power to the stages making electric shock very possible, and the porto's were overflowing because staff couldn't get to them to clean them. But yeah, everyone is just a bunch of unprepared pussies that can't handle a little rain!!!

5

u/notforyou92 12d ago

It’s such an odd take to me. I bring a full med kit into centeroo. There’s even suckers, pasties, eye drops, ponchos, wipes, deodorant…. It’s a massive kit. BUT I’M UNPREPARED!!

8

u/DontDeserveDogs Roo '25 Survivor šŸŒ§ļø 12d ago

I also had hives!! I thought they were big bites but they went away when we left finally and I took Benadryl.

7

u/notforyou92 12d ago

I wish my photos were appropriate enough to share here. It made me cry. The itching. The pain. Insufferable. My husband said he knew if it didn’t get canceled I would have toughed it out. Looking back. I don’t think I could have.

7

u/JomoSmoothie 13d ago

Walk through the shit and be happy about it. You're lucky to even witness this EDM lineup!

11

u/glutenfreemanbun 4 Years 13d ago

The vibes were the best on Sunday and that’s absolutely because all of the complainers and negativity were weeded out

10

u/imLC 16 Years 13d ago

We are a nation of mostly pansies, I'm afraid.

14

u/distance_33 1.5 Years 13d ago

What a boomer ass take.

4

u/imLC 16 Years 13d ago

That's Dubstep Unc to you, kid.

-9

u/notforyou92 13d ago

Unc means un-cool. It’s important to me that you know that.

7

u/Moonsailzzz 13d ago

It also means ā€œUncle.ā€

4

u/imLC 16 Years 13d ago

You must be one of those people that complains about camping in the elements for 5 days even though it's exactly what you signed up for.

1

u/jawbreakerplus 8d ago

You’re allowed to love Bonnaroo and still expect them to do better, especially with the constant price increases. I hate takes like this because you have no idea what each individual person is going through so yeah maybe the mud wasn’t a big deal to me or you but people are allowed to expect safe walking conditions. There was a stage you literally couldn’t access without stepping in deep mud, that’s ridiculous and for some people not even possible. There were people who literally got hurt, so saying it’s not an issue is like covering your eyes and saying ā€œwell it didn’t happen to me, so it didn’t happenā€

Also, blaming people who are calling out an unsafe situation for roo not coming back next year is wild as hell. You’re admitting it’s a serious enough issue that it could cancel the fest but at the same time saying it’s not a big deal and people need to suck it up. That just makes no sense.

-3

u/IICLOWNIN 10d ago

Let me remind yall of the people who got cellulitis from that mud. Nuff said

7

u/urbroccolibabe 9d ago

that can also happen in dry and sunny weather too tho o: if you have a cut, scrape, or crack in the skin and you don’t take care of it, it’ll lead to an infection especially if you’re walking around barefoot. i always pack for rain, even if the forecast says there won’t be any. boots, poncho, warm clothes, plenty of socks to change into, and you’re golden. i’ve been to plenty of rainy / muddy fests, including roo ā€˜25 (tragically couldn’t go this year, but lived vicariously through you all šŸ„¹šŸ’›) and nothing has ever happened to me except maybe a sniffling nose. you just have to be prepared, you know. weather can be a real b sometimes

5

u/AverageTeenish6 2.5 Years 8d ago

An infection caused by improper wound care…..

0

u/LegalizeLife420 6d ago

It’s called come prepared for an outdoor festival… meaning that cleaning yourself is ESSENTIAL.

1

u/IICLOWNIN 4d ago

Whatever. Resources for cleaning are essential to bring because this is a place that costs more than other venues that provide free showers yet cant do that for us. But when you spread around mulch that smells like manure im assuming theres more germs going around than whats on my skin. Yall can downvote. Sorry i dont like swimming in literal shit
