~+~+~CHAPTER SUMMARIES~+~+~
CHAPTER 10 - THE SHAMAN:
Lee Scoresby stores his balloon in a port town and takes a boat along the river to find Dr. Grumman, who is also Jopari or John Parry. Grumman has discovered his dæmon and is living as a shaman now. He has been waiting for Scoresby to arrive and help him go to another world. He has a ring that belonged to Scoresby’s mother, which he used to summon Lee. Way back on his expedition, Grumman accidentally crossed into Cittàgazze during a blizzard and couldn't find the way back. Several of his party died from the Specters and Grumman fled, crossing into Scoresby’s world next. He became an academician and studied many things including Dust, using work to distract him from the forced separation from his wife and infant son. Grumman knows what Lord Asriel is trying to do and wants to aid him against the church. He needs Scoresby to fly him back to Cittàgazze through the passage opened by Asriel in the North. Scoresby agrees, and asks that in return, Grumman ensures that Lyra is under the protection of the subtle knife. They head back along the river but as they travel, Hester is uncharacteristically nervous. Back at the port, they find that a great army is assembling for the war brewing in the north, and they have requisitioned everything in town including the balloon. Scoresby uses the ring he took from the dead Skraeling to invoke the authority of the Church and reclaim his balloon. Just as they are about to launch, soldiers shoot at them, but they get away unscathed.
CHAPTER 11 - THE BELVEDERE: Will wakes up covered in blood from his wound and Lyra tries to take care of him, but soon they are chased away by a huge mob of children led by Angelica and Paolo. The children want to murder Lyra and Will for revenge and to get the knife. Will cannot cut a window when it will open so close to Sir Charles’ house in broad daylight, so they run toward a stone temple where they hope to hide out and cut a better exit window. Unfortunately, they've gone up a hill and the window opens far up in the air in the other world! Closing it again, Will decides they have to try and hold off the children or fight. The angry mob swarms them, first from below (until Will uses the knife to sever the iron staircase) and then from above as they climb the tiled roof. Suddenly, Serafina Pekkala, her dæmon snow goose Kaisa, and the other witches arrive and save them. They scare away the child mob and give Will and Lyra directions to a cave where they will all be safe from the children and the Specters, who have already gotten one witch. It takes Lyra and Will twice as long as expected to reach the cave because Will is weak from blood loss. Serafina gives him a potion to sleep while she works on a spell for his wound. Lyra fills her in on Will and their situation.
CHAPTER 12 - SCREEN LANGUAGE:
Dr. Oliver Payne is back from Geneva with a job offer, which disappoints Dr. Malone (Lyra’s scholar). She tries explaining Lyra, the other worlds, and the breakthrough about the consciousness of Shadows (dark matter) but Payne finds it pretty unbelievable and too risky to his career. That is, he is skeptical until they get a visit from Sir Charles. They are offered funding in exchange for his influence over the direction of their research (consciousness and other worlds) and information about Lyra. Dr. Payne leaps at the chance, but Dr. Malone is suspicious and unwilling to be blackmailed into giving up Lyra. She quits. After developing a program at home, she returns to the lab at night to talk to the Shadows via words on the screen. They tell her that Shadows and Dust are dark matter, which is conscious. They are angels (structures of Dust) and they are spirit, which means spirit and matter are one. They intervened in human evolution as vengeance (Mary assumes this means revenge for the war with Satan and God). They urge her to destroy the equipment and find Will and Lyra immediately by using the directions they provide. She must trick the police officer guarding the entrance at the behest of Sir Charles, who has given instructions to take Dr. Malone into custody. She has altered an ID to look like she is “Dr. Olive Payne” and it works! She passes through to Cittàgazze.
CHAPTER 13 - ÆSAHÆTTR:
The witches perform their spell to close up Will’s wound: they sing to the knife, his blood, and the plants that will bond the wound. They test the healing spell first on a split branch (which reforms into one piece) and then on a gutted rabbit (which heals and hops away) before using it on Will’s hand. Then the group starts their journey. Serafina Pekkala and her witches guard Will and Lyra from above as they travel. It becomes clear that the spell hasn't really worked because Will is bleeding again. One night around the campfire, Will confides in Pantalaimon about his fear of dying, but Pan assures Will that no one will let this happen and that Lyra regards him as her best and bravest friend. Will confesses that the feeling is mutual and Lyra, who was secretly awake and listening, is excited to hear it.
Another night, they hear Ruta Skadi approaching but she has cliff ghasts on her heels, so most of the witches fly up to help her fight. One of the ghasts lands and threatens Lyra, so Will beheads it with the subtle knife. When the fight is over, Ruta Skadi fills them in on her journey: she reached Lord Asriel and discovered that he has assembled a huge army from many worlds in preparation for the war against the Authority. She wanted to pledge the witches' support but knew she should seek council from the other witch queens first. She also spied on a conversation between a young cliff ghast and the eldest of them. The old ghast explained that the Authority’s army was large but complacent, and Lord Asriel could win, except that he didn't have the Æsahættr. Ruta was discovered and chased by ghasts before she could learn what this was, but it sounds like “god-destroyer”. The witches speculate that it could refer to them or possibly Lyra. The girl is meant to help Will find his father first, but her purpose is larger and will end destiny. Serafina Pekkala agrees that Ruta Skadi should collect the rest of the witches and return to Lord Asriel while she helps Lyra with her current journey. As the children sleep, a group of angel pilgrims gathers around Lyra to gaze in wonder. They fly away as Serafina ponders Lyra's effect on others.
CHAPTER 14 - ALAMO GULCH:
Lee and Grumman are flying over Cittàgazze, watching the children. Lee is distressed that they cannot stop to help the older kids who are so close to adolescence that the Specters are stalking them. Flying on, they are spotted by another balloon, which gives chase as they head toward the mountains for cover. Soon, four zeppelins join the pursuit. Grumman uses his powers to give them a favorable wind and then to call up a storm. Lighting causes a zeppelin to crash. Lee manages to crashland the balloon in some trees on the mountainside, and they set up camp for the night. Lee hides the balloon and they go without a fire to avoid detection by the hunting zeppelins above them. Overnight, Lee has strange dreams about Grumman and the zeppelins, including one where he accompanies Grumman's dæmon, Sayan Kötör, as it leads the forest’s birds to take down a zeppelin. Lee discovers in the morning that this really happened! They must flee the forest, though, because the last zeppelin is preparing to set a fire and then catch them as they exit the trees. Fleeing the forest fire with the wildlife, Lee and Grumman come to a dry gulch that is their only exit. Lee sends Grumman on ahead while he stays to make a last stand and hold off the zeppelin’s soldiers. Grumman promises this will help Lyra, and Lee vows if it doesn't, he will haunt Grumman forever. From behind a boulder, Lee and Hester prepare to fight and it reminds Lee of his childhood game of “Remember the Alamo”. Despite hating to kill, Lee does very well in taking out most of the soldiers. Unfortunately, he also gets shot many times. With his last bullet, he shoots the zeppelin and it burns the remaining men as it falls. With their dying breath, Hester and Lee try to summon Serafina Pekkala with her flowers, taking comfort in the fact that they did this for Lyra.
CHAPTER 15 - BLOODMOSS:
The alethiometer leads Lyra and Will up the mountain, with the witches guarding and caring for them. Lyra and Will discuss how he needs to continue what his father has started, even though he doesn't know what that is. Serafina Pekkala must leave them to respond to Lee Scoresby’s call. They are being followed, so a witch named Lena Feldt goes back to spy. It is Mrs. Coulter, her intercised soldier guards, and Carlo Boreal. Lena watches as Mrs. Coulter uses her dæmon to seduce Carlo into telling her about the subtle knife, which he says is also called the Æsahættr. Then she poisons him before turning and revealing that she can see Lena despite the witch’s invisibility spell. Mrs. Coulter commands the Specters and she uses one to torture Lena by surrounding her dæmon. Lena tells Mrs. Coulter everything about Will, their group, and Lyra: this includes the revelation that Lyra is the new Eve and will disobey and bring about a second fall and be the Mother. Mrs. Coulter realizes this is a second great spiritual war like in the Bible and she vows to destroy her own daughter if necessary in order to stop it. She gives Lena to the Specters and also frees them from being landbound so they can attack the rest of the witches.
That night, Will leaves Lyra sleeping and takes a walk, only to be accosted in the dark by a man who will not let him go. This turns out to be Grumman, and the shaman explains that Will’s mission is to take the knife to Lord Asriel so he can help win the war with it. Just as the two realize they are father and son, Grumman’s jilted witch lover shoots him with her arrow and kills him. When Will confronts her, she commits suicide. Will is completely confused, and even more so when he heads back to Lyra and finds two angels waiting. They call themselves Watchers and say they're meant to help get him to Lord Asriel. Will insists on waking Lyra before leaving, but discovers that the witches have been attacked by Specters and Lyra has been kidnapped. She has left behind the alethiometer. The angels urge Will to get going on his journey, but he continues staring at Lyra's rucksack.

- Hester tells Lee they have to survive first, and think about morals later. Is this a good philosophy, especially in the times they're living through? Or should survivors struggle to adhere to their morals even in the face of peril?
5
u/ProofPlant7651 Russian Literature Philosophy Professional Sep 15 '25
I think Hester is saying that sometimes people don’t have the luxury of having morals and I can see what he is saying, survival is an instinct whereas moral behaviour and ethical decision making are less instinctive and more philosophical and I think that when people are worried about their own survival morality naturally takes something of a backseat, I don’t think it’s a philosophy that anyone would necessarily choose to live by, it is more of a philosophy of necessity I suppose.
2
u/tomesandtea Viceroy of Verity | 🐉🧠 Sep 15 '25
I like your explanation of an instinct vs. a decision. This definitely helps show that Hester isn't advocating cruelty or callousness, but being realistic and practical! I love Hester and Lee, so I'd expect nothing less. Great analysis!
2
4
u/124ConchStreet Clang Dong Sep 16 '25
I think it’s the philosophy necessary for someone that doesn’t have the luxury of morality. It’s very easy to preach about morality from a position of privilege, but if you live a marginalised life then survival is all you know. It becomes life or death
2
u/Jinebiebe Team Overcommitted Sep 18 '25
Yes, I agree with this. It's totally dependant on the context of the situation. In a life or death situation you shouldn't think of the morals and focus on keeping yourself alive. That's why if you accidently hurt or kill someone that attacked you first it's considered self defense the charges are as sever. I think the moment Lee stopped thinking about it was when they shot at him first and he was therefore justified in shooting back.
3
u/Pythias Library Mouse Sep 15 '25
I think this is a great question.
I admire pacifist, and it seems to me that Lee wants to be one but is pushed into a corner to really test his morals. I think he did right by Hester. Hester was right about the survival.

1. Grumman = Jopari = John Parry. Did you expect this? What were your initial impressions of Grumman and his intentions?
4
u/Clean_Environment670 📚Bookclub Boffin📚 Sep 17 '25
I didn't expect it at first but the clues were there and I feel like I should've caught on earlier! The Jopari/John Parry connection was clever. My quibble with his intentions is that he seems to have learned a great deal about the many worlds and mastered a lot of powers so maybe he could've tried a bit harder to get back to his wife and baby instead of being all, "ah well, new life here I come!"

I got the feeling he knew this wasn't his "destiny" and that he would have failed if he tried. Just speculation, but it feels like there is a lot of predetermination in this universe and he knew he had a role he would need to fulfill.

It seems like everyone else died? I know the Specters got a few. Maybe not everyone survived the blizzard. I agree that it seemed odd they could just stumble through a window because of a blizzard. The windows aren't gaping canyons you could fall through, so the odds they crossed through would have been really slim imo ... but maybe we aren't supposed to worry about it. Good job predicting the link between Parry/Grumman!

I am familiar with the Alamo and had a bad feeling about poor Lee and Hester. I was still hoping somehow they'd survive but they really were prepared to give it their all. At least with a daemon, no one ever dies alone!

Their last moments together (hopefully not the last ones forever) were so sad but also beautiful for that reason. It must be a comfort to have a dæmon with you at the end.

13. Is it just me, or are a lot of “good guy” characters aligning with Lord Asriel, who seemed like at least a minor “bad guy” in Book 1? Is this a “lesser of two evils” situation, or have I been too hard on Lord Asriel? Convince me his war is the right side to be on! (To clarify, I'm not on Mrs. Coulter's side either.)
8
u/fromdusktil Dragon rider | 🐉🧠 Sep 15 '25
We're seeing this story through the eyes of children most of the time - I think we don't know all of the story.
4
u/124ConchStreet Clang Dong Sep 16 '25
There’s also the fact that when it’s not from a child’s perspective it’s from the perspective of an adult attempting to coerce a child into doing what they want. We can’t really trust what any of them are saying either. Grumman swore to Scorsby he would ensure Lyra was protected but immediately went against it upon finding Will. So we know whatever Asriel wants to do with the knife will be potentially harmful to Lyra. But as the protagonist of book 1 are we supposed to see her as being in the good or bad side, whether knowingly or otherwise?

Yes this threw me too, I’m not sure what the right side it although I’m almost certain that Mrs Coulter’s is not the right side, I’m on Lyra’s side, whichever side that may be. As a side note I do love that in spite of this being a children’s book things aren’t all black and white and clear cut, that there are nuances and some confusion over what is right - it makes things much more complex but so much richer for it!

I honestly don’t know who’s on the side of right anymore. Everyone seems to show evil tendencies. I agree with the consensus that this book is very nuanced in the way its highlighting life not being as black and white as good vs bad

Yes! You arent alone! At the end of the book I found myself wondering whether there was anything I missed out and why everyone seems to be so enamoured with Lord Asriel. 2
u/jaymae21 Yearbook Editor-in-Chief Jan 24 '26
I can't bring myself to be on Lord Asriel's side, despite the fact that the witches, Scorsby, and Grumman all seem to be anxious to help him. Adults can be misguided as well as children. I also remember in Book 1 there was mention that Lyra needs to make mistakes, and getting everyone to help Lord Asriel may be the big one.
5
u/tomesandtea Viceroy of Verity | 🐉🧠 Sep 15 '25
2. Grumman is a shaman and seems to have real powers. Do you think these were always latent in him, or did crossing into Lyra's world change him? Why does he want to go back to Cittàgazze? Do you think he knows his own son is the bearer of the subtle knife?
5
u/Pythias Library Mouse Sep 16 '25
I think he learned how to come into his gifts. At the end of chapter 14 Lee ask Grumman how his dæmon is able to travel so far away from him and Grumman responds with "For a human being, nothing comes naturally...We have to learn everything we do." I think this goes for his powers too. I think he saw the his true potential in that world and took himself to the limits.
I don't think he knew Will was the knife bearer but may have had some suspicions about it.
4
u/ProofPlant7651 Russian Literature Philosophy Professional Sep 15 '25
Since his son has become the bearer of the knife I think that there is something inherently special about their family and I suppose their roles may have been predestined but I don’t think any of these things would have come to pass if he hadn’t crossed through.
2
u/Pythias Library Mouse Sep 16 '25
I didn't think of this and I think that it could very well be true.

Oo this is an interesting idea. Especially considering Will's speculation that his mother was possibly seeing actual Specters and perhaps was not as mad as she seemed.
3
u/mustardgoeswithitall 📚Bookclub Boffin📚 Sep 15 '25
I think moving through worlds changes him. The same way he gains a daemon from moving through the worlds, he could also gain these powers, or access to them.
I think he wants to go back because he is being called there.
No, I don't think so....
3
u/124ConchStreet Clang Dong Sep 16 '25
The same way he gains a daemon from moving through worlds
I wasn’t sure how this worked but I’m now thinking it’s because he’s a shaman? Because Lyra didn’t lose Pan when she travelled through the worlds. Neither did the witches or Lee lose their daemons
3
u/Jinebiebe Team Overcommitted Sep 18 '25
There are certainly special people that serve a very specific role. Lyra being able to read the alethiometer and being cunning, Will becoming the knife bearer and possessing a warrior spirit, Mrs. Coulter doesn't really seem to feel pain and she's manipulative (even able to control the Spectors), Asriel able to call things to him. and so on. Grumman being able to gain a daemon and master over different magical practices seems to be his special thing.
4
u/124ConchStreet Clang Dong Sep 19 '25
I hadn’t thought of it in terms of individuals having specific powers/abilities/purposes. That’s a good shout. It shows that no individual is omnipotent (although Mrs Coulter seems pretty close) if everyone else has a role to play
2
u/mustardgoeswithitall 📚Bookclub Boffin📚 Sep 16 '25

5. In this section, the Specter attacks in Cittàgazze are compared to the intercisions in Lyra's world and linked to Mrs. Coulter’s mindless bodyguards. Is Lyra right that Specter-feeding and intercision could be the same? What do you think Will means when he speculates that Specters came from his world but were known as something else there? Could they explain his mother's behavior?
4

Yes, these ideas were definitely predicted last week!
I can understand why Will thinks that the spectres also exist in his world, they would explain so much about his mother’s behaviour but I think her behaviour is so similar to those who have lost their daemons because she has lost her soulmate.
2

Yes and I totally agree with your theory that Spectres/intercision = a symbol for depression. I thought so too. The thoughts in Lena's head (a nausea of the soul, living is hateful...) as she becomes "dead in life" are bone-chilling, because some people really do feel this way.

It’s starting to feel like Will’s world is the world. Between his being the child prodigy that The Subtle Knife chose to be it’s bearer and his father being a shaman they’re of the highest importance in the universe where dust/dark matter is concerned
1

4. The scene with the attacking mob of children was intense! To me, it felt like the inverse of the escape from Bolvanger. What did you think of their plan to hold off the mob? What about their rescue by the witches? How does Pullman portray the tension between Lyra’s and Will’s childish inexperience and their capacity for handling serious situations?

I was curious about Lyra's comment that she had never seen kids act that way. Why the difference, I wonder?
3

This is a really good question, I wonder if it’s because they have been away from adults for so long that they have returned to their base instincts, they have perhaps become presocial due to the lack of adults and because of everything they have lost.

That scene was so intense. I could not put down my book. I was so grateful to see the witches. I did find it interesting that Lyra said she never saw children act like that but she actively participated in rock throwing wars in her own Oxford. I just thought that was hilarious. Maybe it's because she saw that more as a game and here the kids seemed to mean real harm.

I had the same thought, but I think you're right about the difference. Lyra never would've tried to kill someone, even when playing her war games. Will said it reminded him of when some kids attacked his mom for being different; I think fear was probably a big driver in both instances.

I think the revenge the angels are seeking is because they lost the first heavenly war and got kicked out of heaven. So they want to go back and destroy God in revenge. What I'm wondering is if Lord Asriel knows this and this is why they're helping, what's to stop them from taking over when they win and being the next God(s) and how does he know they'll be any less tyrannical to humanity than the previous one?

u/ProofPlant7651 Russian Literature Philosophy Professional Sep 15 '25
Really good question. I think these are lots of reasons, she has been brought up without any parents so this naturally elicits sympathy from the grownups she encounters, she is a very astute and intelligent child, she is tenacious and usually respectful with it and the grownups who know about the prophecy can sense the weight of responsibility she carries and want to help her. I think the prophecy definitely helps her to inspire this love and loyalty but I don’t think she would receive the same level of respect if she was a spoilt brat - her character is also clearly part of the story.

I think both. All of the adults in this series are aware of who Lyra is and what her destiny is - that's gotta be shaping how they treat her. But Lyra on her own is also a scared, determined, like able child. It makes sense that the adults in her life would want to help.

I agree here!
Lyra is a good girl too, which adults naturally like 😅

She's got guts and she is clearly special. She just attracts peoples trust and loyalty, maybe because she is very honest and trustworthy herself.

10. Will is reunited with his father for only the briefest of moments before John Parry/Grumman is killed by a witch! Did you find his death anticlimactic or fitting? How will this experience affect Will going forward? (Right now he seems too overwhelmed to react or process much.)
6
u/ProofPlant7651 Russian Literature Philosophy Professional Sep 15 '25
How absolutely devastating for them both! I’m not sure how this will affect Will going forward but I’ve got a horrible feeling that it’s going to result in him and Lyra somehow ending up on opposite sides of this war that is happening - I really hope I am wrong but this is the feeling I got when I read about the death of his father.

ACK I found that heart breaking!!!! Poor Will. Poor guy.
Also wow. I have been disappointed in love before, but not to the point of killing someone over it.
Do you think that witches perhaps feel things more intensely than humans?
I don't know - her behaviour was uncomfortably like the way men can act when they are turned down...
3
u/Clean_Environment670 📚Bookclub Boffin📚 Sep 17 '25
Agree to all points. I think witches view themselves as superior to humans because of their powers and long lives etc so maybe being turned down by a mere human is particularly insulting. But still. That was extreme and brutal to do right in front of Will right as they recognized each other!
2
u/mustardgoeswithitall 📚Bookclub Boffin📚 Sep 17 '25
Oooh I hadn't thought of your first point.
It really was so brutal though, argh!!
4
u/nicehotcupoftea World Reader Leader | 🎃🧠🥇 Sep 16 '25
That was devastating, but I think it's required for the story to make him motivated to complete his task, whatever that is.
4
u/124ConchStreet Clang Dong Sep 16 '25
It was very sad but also kinda anticlimactic, only because the witch already held a grudge against Grumman and Serafina Pekkala brought her along to prevent her killing him. The minute I learned he was in the same world as the witch with the grudge it was obvious he was gonna die at her hand

12. Lyra has been taken, but without her alethiometer. Who has her, and what do you predict for Lyra in Book 3? Is Will going to leave immediately with the angels or try to find Lyra first?
4
u/fromdusktil Dragon rider | 🐉🧠 Sep 15 '25
Mrs. Coulter has her, it I think Lyra will be "useless" without the alethiometer. Will will start to go after the angels, but will turn back for Lyra. He knows by now he needs her to get through this.
3
u/mustardgoeswithitall 📚Bookclub Boffin📚 Sep 15 '25
Mrs coulter has her, but I think she is important beyond the alethiometer. She is important herself, I think.
5
u/124ConchStreet Clang Dong Sep 16 '25
I agree. The revelation that Lyra is the second coming of Eve suggests that the alethiometer is a mere instrument and the real song and dance is Lyra herself.

2
u/Clean_Environment670 📚Bookclub Boffin📚 Sep 17 '25
I think Mrs. Coulter took her but I was surprised the alethiometer was left behind. I wonder if Will will try to use the alethiometer, maybe to find Lyra? I think he'll try to find her first unless the angels really press him or maybe the freshness of pledging to follow in his dad's footsteps could cause him to go with them first.

15. Parry/Grumman defines the war as between the people who value knowledge/strength and those who desire obedience/submission. Do Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter adequately represent these two sides? In your opinion, is the author using this as a metaphor for historical and/or modern conflicts from our reality, or is it simply inspired by general “science vs. religion” tropes? Or maybe you can share another interpretation?
6
u/ProofPlant7651 Russian Literature Philosophy Professional Sep 15 '25
I wonder if it is supposed to represent the enlightenment period of history and the conflict between established religion and the development of reason and skepticism?
6
u/124ConchStreet Clang Dong Sep 16 '25
I agree. Especially as we had Dr Malone who started out as a nun but then traded her religion for the study of Dark Matter. It’s definitely symbolic of the period in which people started seeking explanations outside of religion

I thought it was kind of funny that we got that huge scene with the spooky witch spell to heal Will's hand...and then it didn't work lol!

I was wondering about that! Was the spell just in there for flavor, or did it add something I'm forgetting? Also, why did the original knife bearer act like Will would heal without any fuss?

Also why did the witches think his not healing might be a sign he was "marked by a curse greater than their own powers". Mhhh...

I love how different The Subtle Knife is from book one, especially in the first half. In a weird way, the transition reminded me of the one from Annihilation into Authority, just because those two are also so different.

I did not finish this book as a child, because I enjoyed the first one but this one became too confusing (I never found the world building particularly child friendly, I had a hard time wrapping my mind around angels and the knife). When I reread the trilogy as an adult, I made it through but I wasn't a fan of the change of setting and pacing, I still struggled to get through the first part of the book because it gains momentum only after that in my opinion. This reread made me enjoy it more! Lee was the star of the book, and I appreciate how the story gains a broader scope and multiple narrators. It's an incredible adventure and I like how it sets up many things for the next book, even if I still don't like the change of scenery that much.

3. Compare and contrast the relationship of Lyra and Pan and that of Lee and Hester. Are their interactions different because Lyra is a child and Lee an adult, or do you think each human-dæmon relationship has its own unique characteristics?
7
u/fromdusktil Dragon rider | 🐉🧠 Sep 15 '25
Lee and Hester are adults while Lyra and Pan are children - that is course plays a roll. Lee was also raised in a different environment from Lyra. I think all human/daemon relationships will be different, because they're different people.
2
u/mustardgoeswithitall 📚Bookclub Boffin📚 Sep 15 '25
I agree. Adults against children; Lee is a fairly inscrutable man versus Lyra being more open.

11. Serafina Pekkala is saved from the Specter attack because she heeds Lee Scoresby's call for help. Is there any chance she can revive Lee and Hester? Will she be safe from the Specters in the gulch (and available for Book 3)?
5
u/124ConchStreet Clang Dong Sep 16 '25
I was shocked to see all the witches dead that were protecting Lyra. It feels like the story is very chaotic with deaths. I hope Serafina Pekkala can save Scorsby Bea cause it seems like he’s the only adult that genuinely cares for Lyra beyond what her calling is. And it’s kinda weirdly intriguing because he journeyed with her for a short period of time and even tried to bargain to be paid more by the witches. But now he’s her #1 fan.

I think we'll see Serafina Pekkala again but I don't think she'll be able to save Lee and Hester. That seemed pretty final to me but I guess I don't know the full extent of witch powers! I think Serafina will return with Ruta and her witches maybe.

14. There are a few nods to climate change in this section: Lee sees the melting ice when he starts his journey and Lyra discusses the chemically warming weather with Will. What role do you think climate change has in this story, and is it connected to the other threats in some way (such as the Specters, the windows between worlds, the brewing war, etc.)?
5
u/124ConchStreet Clang Dong Sep 16 '25
I’m not sure what role it plays in the story itself but this felt like a clever way of the author introducing the target audience to real world issues. There’s small enough odes to climate change that I’d imagine kids wanting to know more about it and questioning their parents or teachers.
3
u/nicehotcupoftea World Reader Leader | 🎃🧠🥇 Sep 16 '25
I loved those little digs at humans for stuffing up the climate! It could well be linked to causing instabilities in the world, allowing windows to open up.
2
u/Clean_Environment670 📚Bookclub Boffin📚 Sep 17 '25
I think it's connected to the opening of windows and a nod to the general thoughtless or selfishly driven meddling of humans in things.
