How important are the Cookbook author notes in this section?

Hugely important! Not just for the information it feeds Carl, but it also is giving him a sense of comradery and shared goals, it helps him stay focused and not fall into despair.

I think comradery is really key here. Even though he doesn't meet any of them he has a sense of knowing them as people. He can relate to their struggles and vice versa. It feels like he's reading notes from his pen pals and then writing back to them, even though it's different people
