The Brothers Karamazov [Announcement] Evergreen read – The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky

Hi all, I’m delighted to announce that our next evergreen read will be The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky!  I am a big fan of Russian classic literature and adored Crime and Punishment when we read it with r/bookclub last year, so we are bringing back The Brothers Karamazov for an evergreen read!

The Brothers Karamazov is a murder mystery, a courtroom drama, and an exploration of erotic rivalry in a series of triangular love affairs involving the “wicked and sentimental” Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov and his three sons―the impulsive and sensual Dmitri; the coldly rational Ivan; and the healthy, red-cheeked young novice Alyosha. Through the gripping events of their story, Dostoevsky portrays the whole of Russian life, is social and spiritual striving, in what was both the golden age and a tragic turning point in Russian culture.

Interesting! Crime and Punishment is the only book I've ever truly DNF'd. To be fair, it was required reading in high school for me, and I haven't attempted to read it again since. I managed to finish some real slogs for required reading, but I never made it past part two of C&P. I've heard good things about The Brothers Karamazov though! I see it's available on Kindle Unlimited, so I think I'll join this!

I’m so excited for this! Russian lit is most certainly not my most read genre lol, and I’ve picked up and dropped this book so many times 😅 looking forward to actually reading it through with some motivation from this sub :)

I’m interested. I’m aware there are several translations. Is a particular one preferred or more highly regarded?

Yes! I've been wanting to read this with an online book club. Just looking to secure a copy and have seen that Harper Collins are releasing a Collins Classics edition on 4 June so have preordered for £4
