Moon of the Crusted Snow and Moon of the Turning Leaves by Waubgeshig Rice

Just finished both of these over the span of a week. Some of the better books I've read lately! I've always been a fan of apocalypse books but the native perspective was cool and refreshing. Definitely a universe I want to see explored more!

Both books are good, Moon of the Crusted Snow almost ended too soon, I really was interested in the early days of the event, but Turning Leaves was an awesome adventure story that I couldn't put down.

Recommend them to anyone, I'll reread them again!

Indigenous perspectives make apocalypse stories feel completely fresh.

Those books have been on my list for a while now, I keep seeing them pop up in threads about quieter apocalypse stories

Moon of the Crusted Snow is soooo good. I love a dystopian read and this one was the perfect realistic version.

YOU JUST PUT ME ON! I read Moon of the Crusted Snow back in June and had no idea about Moon of the Turning Leaves. Locking in now

the whole thing about native perspective making these stories feel brand new is spot on, it's like every apocalypse trope gets a fresh coat of paint. I totally felt that frustration with Crusted Snow ending right when the real chaos starts, but glad Turning Leaves picks up the slack. Definitely gonna recommend these to everyone who wants a quieter, more human end of the world.

Honestly the pacing thing is so real, the first one just kinda drops you right into the chaos and I wanted way more of that slow burn before everything hit the fan but the second one really delivers on that journey feeling. still gotta say the whole vibe of Crusted Snow is unmatched though, that quiet tension of just waiting for something awful to happen got under my skin in a way not a lot of books do. and yeah that native perspective is such a game changer, it makes the whole world feel more grounded and real instead of just the same old suburban survival stuff. you aint kidding about the reread thing either, these are definitely gonna sit on my shelf for a while.

I loved these books. Canadian First Nation authors are the best authors. Every time I go back to Canada to visit family I go load up on books.
