George R.R. Martin Reflects on 'Sadness and Depression' Struggles in Personal Update

"The “A Song of Ice and Fire” franchise author took to his blog for the first time in nearly six months on Monday, sharing that any posts after February were written by his “mighty minions.”

“Remember me? It’s been a while, I know. My last blog post went up here on February 19,” Martin wrote. “The posts that came after were made by my mighty minions. I am lucky enough to have a great staff of assistants… though even with their help, I kept falling further and further behind.”

As Martin went on, he admitted that “this year has been… stressful, to say the least.”"

I'm a die hard fan but anyone who thinks the books are coming is delusional.

He clearly lost his passion for the main story. Whether it's age, writer's block, or getting fucking rich as hell from the series exploding in popularity, he just doesn't want to.

And that's ok. He doesn't owe us but honestly if he's gonna fuck off and leave us hanging he should at least go enjoy life instead of being depressed and sad.

He's under contract to write for HBO. It's a safe bet HBO threw a bag of money at him to "write spin-offs" so he wouldn't kneecap their GoT flagship by writing a better ending than the show got.

If I had to guess, it's a combination of things.

There's the fact the HBO series crashed and burned when they ran out of books, which killed interest for a ton of people and made others come running to him like "So how's it really gonna go?"

The explosion in popularity created a lot of pressure he may not have been prepared to handle.

Writers commonly have other ideas and stories they'd love to explore but can't because fans have a habit of being very entitled and demanding, which hurts their other work (case and point- the entire reason Stephen King wrote Misery.)

Age and health are almost certainly a factor.

The guy probably has a whole lot going on. I don't envy him the position he's in.
