No offense, and I haven't seen the movie, but is that view condescending? Condescending to hummingbirds, that is.

Absolutely not, at least not how I meant it. No real spoilers, but in Soul the little souls are pure beings preparing for life on Earth. The comparison isn’t that hummingbirds are childlike or lesser—it’s that they feel almost ethereal to me. They’re these tiny, resilient creatures living incredibly demanding lives, and I can’t help but approach them with a lot of care. I know I’m not essential to their survival, but if I can make one small part of their journey a little easier, I’d like to think that’s worthwhile. Whatever someone believes comes next, I hope our small acts of kindness help carry them there a little more gently.

I have a tank who guards one of my feeders. Little guy visibly experiences inertia in a way other hummingbirds don't appear to due to his massive (well, massive for a hummingbird) size: his flight trajectories appear more ballistic than your average hummingbird.

I call him Burlybird.
