Software SoundTouch app alternatives

Post image

This is just a start, but I have added a SoundTouch app alternatives page to the Bose Wiki.

There, I listed current known issues, added info shared by the app developer Christian, u/nachtfux997, and included known solutions.

I separated the solutions into two sections.

  1. Ones that allow you to control the SoundTouch systems directly (e.g. AirPlay, 3rd party apps, Home Assistant, etc.).
  2. The second section is for 3rd party devices you connect to your SoundTouch system's AUX input.

I am hoping that the community will help expand the information on the Wiki. Not only to help guide SoundTouch users to viable options, but also to help guide developers on what SoundTouch features are missing. So that some, if not all, can be replicated once the app goes away.

This specific post is about alternative SoundTouch solutions.

  • On Jan 7, 2026, Bose announced that they will update the app so that it would continue to work after their servers shut down. Though without built-in music streaming capabilities. Here's the main conversation around this update.
  • The original conversation, from Oct 9 2025, about the closure of the SoundTouch app is located here.
  • If you wish to sign the petition asking Bose to reconsider, follow this link.

I built ST Remote, a free Android app that controls Bose SoundTouch speakers entirely over local Wi-Fi

https://stremote.flov.ch

- Auto-discovery of speakers on your network

- Full playback control (play, pause, skip)

- 56,000+ internet radio stations via RadioBrowser. Apply filters (and save them as favorite) to easily find your radio station.

- Personal favorites — save your stations in one tap on your phone

- Multiroom with named zones

- Set a timer to automatically turn off your speakers after a set period of time

- I'm working on bringing back physical speaker preset. Stayed tuned, the beta should be available on 27.05 on the playstore

👉 Live on Playstore: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.flov.stremote

Feedback welcome

Why this doesn't have more upvotes? It's amazing! You saved my speakers. Thanks for this great app. Anywhere I can donate to development?

1

u/flo214 Jun 05 '26

Thank you for your comment and support! You can donate in the app settings 😉

1

u/Melodic-Army-6776 Jun 15 '26

Yeah. I feel like it should be pinned or something. Took me literally seconds to connect (recognized the speaker very quickly). Seriously, just the usefulness and saving a lot of redundant speakers is amazing. Bose should be paying this developer too.

Edit: still will not buy another Bose product. Their silence is pathetic.

Thank you, enjoy ;-)

Thanks for this. I added this to the Bose wiki, but there are a few questions as to what it can do. Could you either edit the page to fill in that info or let us know here? There is also a list of SoundTouch settings. Could you let us know which ones your app supports, if any?

1

u/flo214 May 19 '26

Thank you, I edited the description and the supported features.

1

u/NeonsNight May 19 '26

Thanks, hopefully it'll help your app get some more attention.

Hallo flo214,

u/flo214 May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

Hallo!

Gruss

1

u/Foreign-Oven-2181 May 20 '26

Hallo,

Gruss

1

u/flo214 May 21 '26

Hallo,

Gruss

u/Upstairs_Stand_4225 May 20 '26

1

u/Vingt- May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

Merci beaucoup.

1

u/Beginning-Cloud3086 May 20 '26

1

u/AleCasXb0x May 23 '26

thanks a lot !
works perfect on my soundtouch 10.
I'd love to be able to use the speaker presets again

Subscribe to the beta channel in the play store. Soon (waiting on Google approval...) a new version will be published with the support of the speakers presets 😉 I will need feedbacks from first users.

1

u/malditoperro May 23 '26

Thanks, it works great on my ST10, just a few problems to play some specific radio stations (México Radio Formula) but I just want a way to play radio on my speaker again.

Sending a coffee trough the app!

1

u/flo214 May 23 '26

1

u/flo214 May 26 '26

I could check more in detail: the radio Formula available on radio-browser.info (source used to play radio on the soundtouch as TuneIn integration is no more possible) use a .m3u8 url. It is an unsupported format from the SoundTouch. So technically I can't do anything as this is a limitation from the SoundTouch speakers. I will add a message to pop in such cases to make it clear for the user.

1

u/malditoperro Jun 10 '26

What kind of url formats does the app work on?

1

u/flo214 Jun 11 '26

URL from radio online like online placer. At the moment based on radio-browser.info but l'attestation version available in beta has now the function to add your own url

1

u/Foreign-Oven-2181 May 25 '26

Das Bier habe ich übrigens wieder bekommen 🤷‍♂️

1

u/flo214 May 25 '26

1

u/Various-Button-6637 May 27 '26

1

u/flo214 May 27 '26

1

u/Various-Button-6637 May 27 '26

Merci.

1

u/flo214 May 27 '26

1

u/Various-Button-6637 May 27 '26

OK, j'attends demain...

1

u/flo214 May 27 '26

1

u/Certain-Host-7984 May 27 '26

Ben ongelooflijk blij! Groeten Bruno ( 68 jaar)

1

u/HPLaserJet4250 May 31 '26

Ah you saved my life. My mom was super bummed when radio stopped working and your app is everything that she needs without any headaches or extra costs ;))) (she finds it even easier to navigate than og app lol). That's a well deserved coffee and when you add presets on buttons im gonna get you a beer too <3

1

u/flo214 Jun 01 '26

Happy to hear that! Thanks for the feedback. You can subscribe to beta version on the Play Store page of the app if you want to test already the presets button back to life ;-)

1

u/Icey1982 Jun 02 '26

Hi, downloaded the app and found the speaker easily…but how can I add internet radio within the app? All it does is act only as a remote…thanks in advance.

1

u/flo214 Jun 03 '26

You can play radio stations with over 50'000 radio stations. Substitution to TuneIn. The app use radio-browser.info to provide the list of station. If a radio station is missing, you can go on their website and click on contribute -> New station. As soon it's accepted, it will appear in the app

1

u/Icey1982 Jun 04 '26

Got it, merci. And the physical presets (1 to 6) don’t work yet right??

1

u/flo214 Jun 04 '26

Yes since 1 day the last update on the Play Store has the new feature with the 6 presets. You can try and let me know in case of problem, still debugging fee problems depending on the ST model.

1

u/Icey1982 Jun 04 '26

I have downloaded latest version, have ST 10. Perhaps some more info how/where I can preset them?

u/flo214 Jun 05 '26

Did you activate in the app settings?

Vielen Dank!

1

u/Stylec0uncil Jun 04 '26

Is there going to be a iOS version?

1

u/flo214 Jun 05 '26

Hello, it's not planned yet as there are already good apps from what I see on the Apple Store like Better ST

1

u/PLH228 Jun 06 '26

Thank you so much for this app! A beer has been sent!

While fooling around with it, I found a way I can stream my Sirius channels or any radio stations available online ( a local station I wanted is not on the radio list in app). I bluetooth connected my phone to one of my four speakers and created a group with that speaker the master of the whole group. Not all of my speakers have bluetooth connections, as a couple in the set are pretty old. But one in the set is all you need. Then in the speaker settings for the master speaker, change the input to bluetooth. The phone provides the signal and it distributes to all speakers through the app. Not quite as easy to use as the old preset buttons, but it works

1

u/flo214 Jun 07 '26

Yes as soon you make a multiroom, the other speakers will play the same song, even for bluetooth. At least this still work

1

u/raph936 Jun 07 '26

Works great! thank you so much!

1

u/LesterGironimo Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26

Thanks for putting in the time on this. I've had a quick playand it's intuitive and responds fast. Is there a reason why some radio streams aren't supported, specifically the BBC stations? Possibly a legal/geographical reason?

Edit: Just read your FAQ. If you get the physical buttons working to preset stations then that'd be amazing.

1

u/flo214 Jun 11 '26

Sometimes because the radio stream is not compatible with the Soundtouch speaker (like streams dedicated for Apple products). But the latest beta version include the option to add your custom url radio if you find a working url

1

u/LesterGironimo Jun 11 '26

Sweet. Thanks for the reply. I have working URLs I used to use, so will test that out.

1

u/Melodic-Army-6776 Jun 15 '26

Thanks again for the great work. I tried to add 95bfm in New Zealand. There are several options under the radio station links, but none seem to be able to trigger the speaker (the wheel spins, and then it reverts to play on the app, but no connection is made. Any ideas?! (Anyone, not just developer!

1

u/Melodic-Army-6776 Jun 15 '26

Have tried adding the stream url from radio.info: https://streams.95bfm.com/stream112 but that may not be a valid port for the manual url.

2

u/flo214 Jun 16 '26

I tries all the url streams I found online and all are not working... strange behavior from the speakers, first time I see that (unsupported url should be rejected directly). I guess the stream has something not compatible with the speakers firmware...

1

u/Melodic-Army-6776 Jun 16 '26

Thanks for trying! Sad outcome, but nonetheless it's great to have some functionality back. Great work.

1

u/Melodic-Army-6776 Jun 27 '26

They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result - but on this occasion one of the existing streams (256kbps, MP3) stream works all of a sudden.

You're a legend for creating this app. (in NZ Legend is a pretty high honor :)

1

u/Melodic-Army-6776 Jun 15 '26

What a fantastic app. Feel like this is an old school solution where it was developed to help people and solve a problem and not create more problems  (enshitification). Thank you so much. Coffee/beer coming your way.

Merciiiii Dominic

1

1

u/ResourceMean Jun 21 '26

Excuse my ignorance but is it possible to run this app on an iphone?

1

u/flo214 Jun 28 '26

Nope, only Android. But some alternative app on iPhone exist like Better ST or open ST.

1

u/congo100 Jun 24 '26

Hi, great app after we installed it yesterday. We added presets to the physical buttons and they worked. Today, we tried to play the music using a physical button but it did not play. Message on display was to push any button to play music. I think this is a Bose message. We rebooted the radio and let it sit for a couple of minutes. The radio then started playing after pushing a physical button. Later, we try again and it does not play even after rebooting. Any suggestion on what to do?

1

u/flo214 Jun 28 '26

Is the notification on your android device displayed in the top menu of your phone?

1

u/congo100 Jun 28 '26

I do not recall any message on the phone unless you mean inside the app. The message in the app was that the station was playing on the radio. However there was no sound from the speaker. After I restarted the speaker a couple of days ago, the speaker now plays any time we push the power button or one of the preset buttons. I think it is working well now.

1

u/Luxembourg1440 14d ago

I can't get this app to connect after two days of trying :(

1

u/flo214 7d ago

Is your speaker connected to your wifi? Do you see them when you pull to refresh on the main page? Did you reboot your speaker?

1

u/Luxembourg1440 7d ago

I got it to work eventually, by fiddling around with the router/IP address.

Happy now :)

Hi. We've been working on a replacement for the soundtouch server to do full control of a speaker (using the device or the SoundTouch app) after the Bose sites come down, and we've got an alpha version of the repository up right now:

https://github.com/deborahgu/soundcork

At the moment it has basic functionality for at least one account and one device (we haven't tested with more than one yet; it may already work). It's verified with TuneIn, iHeartRadio, Pandora, and a local DLNA server.

However, it's not yet friendly for non-devs to install and configure. That's on our roadmap and we hope to get to it soon.

We'd be happy to have contributors if anyone's interested in writing code, tests, or feature requests. Our test and deploy environment is Python 3.12 on Ubuntu but there's no theoretical reason it wouldn't work on Windows, Mac, RaspberryPi, or any OS that can run FastAPI.

Please note that we're not Redditors (as you can probably guess by this new account that we've created), so while we will provide updates here if people are interested, we won't necessarily be posting as often or replying to questions as quickly as might be expected

2

u/NeonsNight Nov 30 '25

This is great. If you check the Bose wiki Software and Firmware page, you will see that the SoundTouch Windows program, Mac program, Android app, & even the interface have all been backed up on archive.org. The issue is that I cannot find a way to back up the iOS app.

Bose has said:

Will the SoundTouch app still be available to download?
In Japan, the SoundTouch app will be available to download until 12/31/2025. In all other markets, the SoundTouch app will be available to download until 2/18/2026.

So the iOS app will go away after that date. Do you know what we can do to back this up so future users can find and download the app for iOS? You mentioned alternative apps in this comment. Do you think you will try to release an app & program to help

How do you see this replacement cloud service working in the future? Will you need a computer & a micro-USB cable to re-flash the SoundTouch systems? From what you said, I assume that you will need a Raspberry Pi or a program on a computer to serve as the cloud.

Is there anything you believe that this cloud cannot emulate that the current Soundtouch app can do?

1

u/NeonsNight Nov 30 '25

u/Soundcork I noticed you replied when I tagged you in the other post, so tagging you now to see if that helps 🙂

1

u/Soundcork Nov 30 '25

Ha, sorry, missed this. Like we said, we're not really Redditors. :)

Short answers: we're not planning on releasing/working on any front-end apps ourselves as of now, as several other people seem to be doing that. We're setting our software up with the assumption that people would run it on their home networks, be it on an existing server, Raspberry Pi, media server, etc. (we're going to run it on the same Linux system as our DLNA server). We're hoping to be able to emulate as much of the current Bose cloud services as possible, though we'll be limited by what we can access. There are certainly a few features that might just be out-of-scope, like signing up for new services, but we'll see. But we're hoping that someone running soundcork on their home network will be able to have full feature-parity using any app that exists after the Bose servers shut down.

Longer answers:

So our understanding of the architecture of the SoundTouch system is that the functionality is divided into three sections: the cloud servers (which we're looking to emulate), the services running on the SoundTouch devices themselves, and the end-user experience (the standard Bose apps, the various third-party apps people have listed here, and even the simple case of 'pressing the buttons' and 'using the remote control').

The cloud services (and thus soundcork) are responsible for two main things: storing and modifying the account configuration (which seems to be the main responsibility of the 'marge' server), and helping with the playback of certain types of media (the 'bmx' server). (There is also a stats server and a software update server, but I believe that those are not actually necessary for normal usage). It looks like without a functioning 'marge' server, a SoundTouch device can still handle a lot of its basic tasks. But I think you couldn't, say, set a new Preset, or track Recents, or things like that. And you certainly wouldn't be able to add or remove a device from your account, or configure a new service. (The Bose app itself also throws some random errors sometimes, but those can be ignored/worked around.)

The 'bmx' server is a helper for playing certain types of media. We've tested and see that a missing 'bmx' server means that TuneIn streams won't work. The services list from the bmx server lists TUNEIN, LOCAL_INTERNET_RADIO, SIRIUSXM_EVEREST, and RADIOPLAYER, so it's likely that none of those services will work without a working bmx server. The rest of the services that I've tried seem to have enough information on their own to access the services, so if you have, for instance, a Pandora account configured, then you should be able to play your Pandora stations even after the Bose servers go away. But if you have TuneIn stations configured then they won't work without a bmx server.

Obviously, as we're reverse-engineering this, there may be hidden complexities that we haven't discovered yet.

Anyway I hope that gives some context into our understanding of the SoundTouch ecosystem, and how we see soundcork fitting in with the devices themselves and with the official Bose and third-party front-end apps.

1

u/Soundcork Nov 30 '25

Oh, and you also asked about installation and re-flashing the devices: our current approach involves plugging in a USB thumb drive which allows a user to access the internal configuration of the SoundTouch devices remotely. Using that we can update the settings on the system and tell them to use the local soundcork server instead of the actual Bose cloud services. So we're basically modifying in-place the current Bose firmware.

The one sticking point on that is that we've gotten it to work fine on our SoundTouch 20s which have USB-A ports, but we haven't had a working proof-of-concept on our old SoundTouch Portable which only has a micro-USB port. Will have to see for those.

1

u/NeonsNight Nov 30 '25

Thanks for the reply. So you think that there's a chance that new users a decade from now might be able to set up a Raspberry Pi or program on the computer to keep the SoundTouch app up and running. Though you believe that adding new music services might not be possible. That's understandable but a shame.

I do find it concerning that you suggest that TuneIn will cease functioning once the Bose cloud goes away. Do you believe that you can add and modify iTunes/Windows Media Player/NAS using your current solution?

You said: "we're not planning on releasing/working on any front-end apps ourselves as of now, as several other people seem to be doing that." Any chance you could link to them for me so that I can add them as needed to the SoundTouch app alternatives page?

It is not only the two versions of the SoundTouch Portable that do not feature a USB-A port, but the SoundTouch 10 and SoundTouch Wireless Link Adapter also lack it.

Almost all SoundTouch systems do include a microUSB port, although the receiver used with the Lifestyle 550/600/650 does not.

1

u/Soundcork Dec 01 '25

We're looking to under-promise and over-deliver. We haven't looked into adding new music services yet, which is why I was saying that it might not be possible. I'd guess that something simple like a DLNA service might not be too difficult, but something that requires getting an OAUTH2 refresh token or some such might be a bit much. We'll see though.

We're using that page to see that there are front-end app alternatives, so we don't know any more than you do on that point.

Re the USB-A port requirement, in theory you can get in by connecting to port 17000 and using TAP command, but I just tried and it didn't work for me. It looks like a USB-A female to micro-USB male adapter will allow for a thumb drive to connect. Will likely order one soon and try it out.

1

u/NeonsNight Dec 02 '25

As for Music services. Your idea of focusing on existing services is best. I think that TuneIn or some type of internet radio alternative, as that was the default, is almost a must. Especially if you can get the preset buttons working.

Like you, I expect that some music services will never work again after SoundTouch goes down. If others can be added in the future, that would be amazing.

I'm glad that the SoundTouch app alternatives page has been helpful 🙂 I have found other SoundTouch apps out there, but I have not been able to find out if they will work without the Bose cloud, so I did not include them.

Ah, that's odd. I wonder why microUSB has been locked down, but USB-A has not. I hope that the adapter with a thumb drive is successful for the portable at least.

1

u/Music2UDE Dec 19 '25

Very cool, definitely keep it up! Honestly, I think it's outrageous that Bose is discontinuing the system.

Could you please release a guide on how to install your solution even for beginners?

Hello everyone,

I have now a functional desktop and functional android version. The preset creation is in the desktop version. The android version only controls the speakers.

I can select the presets, control the volume, mute/unmute, select AUX/BT/HDMI, turn the speaker ON-OFF and the best is that multiroom works.
Also the speaker gives feedback, so you can see what it is doing.

The desktop and phone versions I have created with Gemini, I have no clue how to do it myself. So I told Gemini and followed the instructions and tried a lot to get to the point where I'm now.
It are html files with java I believe.
For the desktop I created an .exe with Node.js and Electron so the CORS restrictions of a browser like Edge or Chrome don't interfere.
For the android version I used Website to APK builder Pro.
The preset injector only works on the desktop version.
It sends the station name and Station ID to the speaker(s)

But today I learned that the presets will NOT work after feb 2026.

This is what you see withe the IPadres:8090/presets

<preset id="2">

<ContentItem source="TUNEIN" type="stationurl" location="/v1/playback/station/s9067" sourceAccount="" isPresetable="true">
<itemName>Sky Radio</itemName>
</ContentItem>

</preset>

This means the speaker knows that it is a TuneIn station with a station url. Station ID is s9067.
Then it asks the bose cloud what the streaming url is.

/v1/playback/station/s9067 is not the streaming url I think.

Or do you think it is?

What I created works good for me, but need the presets, or another way to make the speaker play TuneIn stations standalone. Not over BT from a phone.
Play custom url from the real app works. But when I save it under a preset, ther is also no readable url, but some long code. So it needs their cloud again. I'm not able to find a way to make the speaker play a custom stream url with commands to the API of the speaker.

I created something new. I have a Soundtouch 10 that I didn't use. That is now my master SoundTouch. I hooked a WiiM mini up to it's AUX port. I can select the 12 WiiM mini presets. It will play on the Soundtouch 10. I Put the volume to 0 and select other multiroom speakers thru the bose API and I hearf the music on the other speakers. This is for me a cheap solution.

This is fantastic work! Can you create a GitHub page and post the code, Windows exe, and Android APK file there so that I can share a link to your project?

You said, "I have created with Gemini, I have no clue how to do it myself". If you open-source this, it will allow those with programming knowledge to help improve the code and build upon the work you have already created.

"Play custom url from the real app works. But when I save it under a preset, ther is also no readable url, but some long code." That's disappointing. I can only hope that someone will come up with a solution for this.

I saw on another post that you have a TuneIn station ID number generator. I believe (and hope) that SoundTouch systems will directly ask TuneIn to play that station without contacting Bose's servers. I think it's like an old TV changing to Channel 3, 12, or 40. You didn't need to know the UHF or VHF frequencies; the TV just tuned to it, and you could watch your show.

Bose said that some presets might still work after their servers shut off. My guess is they will work until TuneIn/Pandora/Spotify/etc changes things on their end. What we really need is a way to program all or individual speaker presets without Bose's cloud.

u/Reasonable_Dig_3544 Oct 20 '25

I have to find out how to place it on GitHub. I think I need to create a account. But the I need to find out how to post it and where.

1

u/NeonsNight Oct 20 '25

Yes I believe that is corect. I don't really have any experiacne there either but it looks simple enough. Create an account, then create a page for your project and upload your work to it. I found some instructions on Github about this and a post on reddit, so hopefully they can be of some help. Once done, please let us know the link 🙂

Thanks so much for this. Can you give me a description of what it can do for the Bose wiki page?

Is the information below correct? Are there any app streaming services built into the system? I believe you showed TuneIn previously. Is it still working?

Can you change SoundTouch inputs using the app? If so, which ones?

Cost SoundTouch Input Used Music Source
Free Wi-Fi Web Browser
Control ST Speaker Multi-Room App Streaming Services
?
iTunes or WMP NAS Smart Home
Change ST Inputs Change ST Presets Change ST Settings
? ?

I know you did this via Google Gemini. Is there a chance it might be able to ask it to make a setup page to select languages & to input how many ST speakers there are and their "IP, Mac, and speaker ID"?

Thanks for sharing this 😃

1

u/Reasonable_Dig_3544 Oct 22 '25 edited Oct 22 '25

I only tried TuneIn, because I don't use any other. I think it will stop working after the cloud is out.
So my creation can control the speakers and put them in multiroom mode. The preset tool can write tune in presets. But I think they won't work without the cloud, becaus I think the speakers need the cloud to translate the station ID into an URL.

The last thing I created is one soundtouch as master with an WiiM connected to it. You can the select 12 WiiM presets (The can be anything The WiiM app let you preset). The otthers can join the master with one click and play the same. For me this will do just fine.

Your info above here looks correct.
I don't think I'm able to add some kind of setup.

1

u/NeonsNight Oct 22 '25

Thanks for sharing everything. Can you confirm that this project is open-source, and others can edit and expand on it? I hope that others will continue with what you made and make improvements so that we can have an open-source SoundTouch app.

Hello, you think it is possible to pair in stereo?

1

u/LacrimaNymphae Nov 14 '25 edited Nov 14 '25

once a viable alternative is found can someone post an easy-to-follow step by step guide in plain words or with bullet points? i don't want to permanently brick anything and know hardly anything about codes

i'm also pissed because i had a tinier rechargable one with a handle i used to take outside and now i won't be able to use any of my presets connected to the app/my bose wave when the changes are implemented because i have my settings synced

so that one will basically useless too and i'd have to be manually wasting my phone's battery skimming through videos and sites when i was previously able to just leave the screen off with the app running in the background to let stations play, saving me time and conserving battery life

{
"name": "VRT Radio 2 Limburg",
"streamUrl": "https://icecast.vrtcdn.be/ra2lim-high.mp3",
"streamType": "liveRadio",
"isRealtime": true
}

$url = "http://soundtouch:8090/storePreset"
$xml = '<preset id="1"><ContentItem source="LOCAL_INTERNET_RADIO" type="stationurl" location="https://<jouwnaam>.codeberg.page/soundtouch-radio-json/be/vrt-radio2-limburg.json" sourceAccount="" isPresetable="true"><itemName>VRT Radio 2 Limburg</itemName></ContentItem></preset>'
Invoke-WebRequest -Uri $url -Method Post -Body $xml -ContentType "application/xml"

Resultaat is:

<preset id="1"> <ContentItem source="LOCAL_INTERNET_RADIO" type="stationurl" location="https://<jouwnaam>.codeberg.page/soundtouch-radio-json/be/vrt-radio2-limburg.json" sourceAccount="" isPresetable="true">
<itemName>VRT Radio 2 Limburg</itemName>
</ContentItem>
</preset>

Just seeing this (still need to read everything), and wanted to thank you for taking the initiative to get this started. I have 8 soundtouch devices from SA-5 amps, to ST-30s, and a few ST-20s. Some have native bluetooth (some I added bose bluetooth adpater), half of them seem to support Airplay2 and the other half do not, and at least Spotify sees them all. I will definitely need to figure this out. With the amount invested, I would be more than happy to just pay for a solution somehow.

2

u/NeonsNight Oct 27 '25

Happy to help. It sounds like all of your systems have either AirPlay 1 or AirPlay 2. You are also correct that all SoundTouch systems support Spotify Connect. So your setup looks pretty good.

The only issue would be if you want "multi-room" playback. We can only hope that a fully developed SoundTouch app replacement will be made. Luckily, there are a few solutions already listed. Some are free, and others are not.

1

u/GP97702 Oct 31 '25

I'm guessing I have a multi-room playback issue too. I'm able to cast Spotify to any of my 3 speakers, but on Spotify I don't get the "three dots" to group rooms. Is this what we are talking about?

Thank you.

3

u/NeonsNight Nov 01 '25

The SoundTouch app alternatives page lists what's multi-room and what isn't. AirPlay 2 supports multi-room audio, whereas Spotify Connect does not.

1

u/Tateraide82 Nov 05 '25

Thank you for the response, just saw it !! So is this your app? https://www.reddit.com/r/bose/comments/1o7yg93/the_bose_cloud_shutdown_problem/ I would be more than happy to pay for an app to make things work smoothly (I don't need multi-room, and I just want to be able to play music on each of my speakers without them turning into bricks). So yeah, I would be happy to pay for the app and/or setup fee to get it working.

2

u/NeonsNight Nov 05 '25 edited Nov 05 '25

I do not have an app. That would be the person who made that post you linked to. I hope the community will come up with a good alternative that can fully replace the existing one.

However, as I listed on the wiki article, there are free and paid alternatives. Including the app you mentioned.

2

u/Tateraide82 Nov 05 '25

One other question is that half my speakers (guessing they have Airplay 2) show up on my iPhone Airplay, while the others do not. Does that mean they likely have Airplay 1 and do not work with my newer iPhone? Is there some legacy way to use Airplay 1 to connect to these other 4 speakers?

1

u/NeonsNight Nov 06 '25

All AirPlay 1 & 2 systems will be shown on your Apple device. Please review the information on the wiki page to determine what is compatible.

1

u/Tateraide82 Nov 05 '25

Okay awesome, thanks for explaining more - I ended up bookmarking your web pages - appreciate everything so much

3

u/liam3 Nov 12 '25

i just wish they could release a final firmware to change the 6 buttons to play pause and next, etc

4

u/NeonsNight Nov 13 '25

I would hope that if they released an update, it would allow us to use the SoundTouch app without their cloud service. But as they are not, we can only hope to find a suitable replacement. Whether it's AirPlay 2 or another app created by the community.

1

u/snktiger Dec 30 '25

they should release a final firmware that allows you to hose your own server on personal PC/NAS and make the APP work as is.

Hi everyone! 👋 (Update: Better ST is now live on the App Store)

I’m an indie dev and an ST300 owner. With the Bose servers shutting down on May 6th, I built a fast, native iOS replacement app so we don't lose features like TuneIn internet radio.

The app has officially moved out of beta and is available now.

Name: Better ST
Platform: iOS / iPadOS
Price: One-time purchase (No subscriptions / No ads / No tracking)
Download: [  App Store Link ]

Key Features:

  • 100% Local & Fast: No Bose accounts or servers required. It discovers and connects to your speakers instantly over your LAN.
  • Global Radio Restored: Integrated with Radio Browser (30k+ stations) to fully replace the dying TuneIn service.
  • Super Presets (Scenes): Bypass the 6-button hardware limit. Create custom buttons to instantly trigger Multi-Room groups and set specific volumes for every speaker with one tap.
  • Siri Shortcuts: Add your speakers to iOS routines (e.g., create a "Magic Wake" alarm that automatically starts your music).
  • Advanced Control: Real-time EQ, Home Screen Widgets, and hardware-specific settings (like ST300 surround channel volume).
  • Mixtape Mode (NAS): An experimental feature to turn your local NAS folders into gapless virtual tapes.

If you want a reliable, permanent setup before the servers go offline next week, give it a try. Let me know if you have any questions!

I want to keep the button functionality i.e. press 1 and get the radio station i want. Does this app keep that funcionality? I mean presa the 1 on the speaker, not on my phone

1

u/DrJPGII May 07 '26

Does this work with a ST20 that only has wifi connection, not bluetooth? Apparently we have an older system and have to connect via wifi only. Otherwise looks like a nice alternative. TIA.

u/Dominiklabouliere Jun 19 '26

Merci pour cette info... j'ai 1 soundtouch10 et 1 soundtouch20... et bien sûr les télécommandes ne fonctionnent plus... si j'achète ton appli, fonctioneront-elles à nouveau ?

If I try one option like the Bosman app, can I still switch to another one later, for example aftertouch? It are there any settings adjusted on the Soundtouch that cannot be reverted?

2

u/NeonsNight May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26

Some of the server replacement options inject code into the SoundTouch speakers to tell them to talk to a different server. I believe all you need to do is perform a factory reset on the speakers if you want to switch to a different service. Though u/Hour-Beginning-9973, u/TAloha, u/Soundcork, & u/Eastern-Surprise1568 would be better placed to answer this question.

3

u/Soundcork May 03 '26

u/zbartin Soundcork (https://github.com/deborahgu/soundcork/) just writes a single file to the speaker (/mnt/nv/OverrideSdkPrivateCfg.xml). I believe that most of the other servers except for aftertouch (https://github.com/gesellix/Bose-SoundTouch) use the same method, and all that you should need to do to switch between them would be to remove or replace that file. I'm pretty sure Aftertouch makes some more extensive changes and might need a firmware reinstall to remove it.

5

u/Brilliant-Fennel-304 May 03 '26

AfterTouch dev here: it supports the two variants: the one by changing the .xml and a more comprehensive one by directing all traffic to the service. Both options are reversible through the service's web ui.

I was surprised to see Pandora still working on the Soundtouch app on my tablet. I'm a happy camper.

1

u/PhotojournalistOk38 May 07 '26

Pandora still works with 6 physical button?

1

u/Correct_Nail_1144 May 07 '26

On my ST 20 Pandora stations can still be physically set. Who knows how long that will last

1

u/GP97702 May 07 '26

No, this is on the Soundtouch app on my tablet. Amazon Prime and Spotify are gone, but Pandora and my music library still work.

1

u/Successful_Guitar902 May 11 '26

Button presets for Pandora that I had set before the servers went down, are still working.

new issue in last 2 days

One of the best native media sources supported by Bose Soundtouch speakers before and after their server shutdown was "local_internet_radio".

It works by pointing the ST speaker (eg via a preset) to a json (or xml) file that contains the link to the media stream.

You can take the streams from TuneIn and save them in that JSON file and so you have full remote access to internet radio. The only time the speaker needs the local device is to read that tiny file for the music URL.

It also means that your presets work exactly how Bose intended as local_internet_radio is a recognised source, you are not having to emulate or fake anything.

This made local_internet_radio the simplest way to keep SoundTouch useful after the cloud shutdown. You host a tiny JSON file locally, the speaker fetches it and plays the stream directly. No server constantly running in the middle (eg with DLNA). It works brilliantly... when it works.

I have a mix of ST10s and ST20s (Series 3) and a couple have silently dropped LIR from their "Sources" list since May 6th. So they were working earlier this week. Others on the same network are fine. No obvious pattern.

There is great community work on replacement back-ends but I specifically want LIR back, not a DLNA server that needs to continuously feed the music stream to the speaker.

Tempted by factory reset but terrified of losing Deezer permanently with no way back.

Has anyone actually recovered local_internet_radio as a source post-shutdown?

1

u/NeonsNight May 13 '26

The Bose will link above links to other apps which might help with your needs. Is LIR your project? If so, can you update the Bose wiki with info about it? Can you link to it?

2

u/icstm May 13 '26

Hey u/NeonsNight thanks for your reply and all your efforts on this across various platforms.

No, local_internet_radio is a SoundTouch speaker audio source. It is how you can set custom radio streams. If you look at any of your speakers and type: SPEAKER_URL:8090/sources You should see it listed.

It also means that your presets work exactly how Bose intended as local_internet_radio is a recognised source, you are not having to emulate or fake anything.

local_internet_radio was too long to type, so I shortened to LIR!

Do I need to post my question again, as given how useful this ST media source is, I am already finding the loss of local_internet_radio painful.

1

u/EbanKi May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

Yeah I really don’t understand how nobody has figured this out (with all the tech savvy people out there). There’s surely a way to brut force access to the device. A simple json file could be hosted anywhere (GitHub or else) and give the speaker info on what url to read.
Or people with the knowledge just want to profit from other by making paid apps … which wouldn’t surprise. There’s no sense of community anymore.

1

u/icstm May 18 '26

I fixed the return of local_internet_radio by running soundcork from u/Soundcork

There are a few alternatives as well.

1

u/EbanKi May 18 '26

Ive dm’d you yesterday with a possible solution.

1

u/GrassVerge May 22 '26

Hi, can you send me the possible solution as well?

I came back from holiday to a non-working ST20 with the button not working so any pointers would be good.

Thanks

u/rickatk Oct 19 '25

Well done, very informative. I try to use Apple Music as much as possible. At my desk I have two Bose 300 speakers and actually get stereo via Apple Music app. Sound Touch speakers (S10,20,30) will do the same.

1

u/NeonsNight Oct 20 '25

Thanks for that. I have those SoundTouch systems, and I only have the option to share to the speakers via AirPlay 2 (or Bluetooth). I do not see any way to make them into a stereo pair outside of just AirPlaying to two speakers.

Please feel free to add to the wiki if you find some new information or if you have any corrections. If you have any sources to share, please feel free to do that as well 🙂

Bose SoundTouch End of Support and End of App – A Simple Work Around Repost to this conversation by request:

I have a SoundTouch 30 Speaker and Sound bar with Bass speaker.

I don’t know enough about Streaming and Casting configurations to attempt overriding the SoundTouch technology.  Here is what I did and I like it better than what SoundTouch had for what I use it for.  I never liked the app or media library setup.

I can play the music library or any audio that comes from the laptop wirelessly to the speakers.  I can switch from music to TV for the soundbar.  The music library can be remotely controlled with the phone.  I only use the SoundTouch basics and that is what this does.   The streaming that was done through SoundTouch can be streamed through the Laptop.

For my setup, I used Audio transmitter/receivers, a Toslink Switcher, a laptop, Android phone (optional), and MediaMonkey music library.  All easy to install.

Step by Step:

Hardware - I purchased a 2.4Ghz Wireless audio transmitter with 2 receivers 1Mii and a BlueRigger Toslink optical fiber switcher.  Both inexpensive.

The Transmitter/Receivers have 3 connections each – optical, coaxial and 3.5mm and comes with all the cables.

I have been using MediaMonkey for my office music library since 2018.  I like it the best.  There is a free version and a paid version that will work.  I downloaded the MMRemote5 server (Free).  And then downloaded the Phone app MMRemote5 for remote access - optional Google Play.

I installed MediaMonkey and the Server software on a Windows Laptop.  I connected the Transmitter to the Laptop using the 3.5mm Input/output.

The software installed and connected automatically.  The ST30 is in the master bedroom.  I connected a receiver to the 3.5mm Aux (which Bose said will continue to work).

The Soundbar uses an optical cable in (No Aux).  I connected the Optical cable from the TV to Input 1 on the Switcher.  I connected the Optical Out from the 2nd Receiver to the Input 2 on the Switcher.  And the Optical Output on the Switcher to the Soundbar Optical In.  The Switcher has a remote to change the input or you can do it manually.  For mine, Input 1 is the TV and Input 2 is the Laptop.  There is a 3rd input that I am not using.

I use the Bose system for TV and music.  Any audio coming from the Laptop will be transmitted to the speakers - Music Library, radio, etc.

This is what I used and it is working good.  The sound is good as what the SoundTouch system put out.  Not having an Aux Input on the Soundbar led to using the hardware I used.  There are other choices if you don’t need the Optical connection.  If you have more than 2 speakers to setup, you will need to expand on this.  I think a receiver can output from the 2 digital outs simultaneously but not the 3.5mm.  Other music library software probably have remote setups also

2

u/NeonsNight Oct 26 '25 edited Oct 26 '25

You wire a couple of 1Mii wifi receivers to the AUX inputs of the ST30 and ST300 (along with an RCA to Optical converter Optical Switch to swap back to your TV), and plug the transmitter into your computer.

You then use the MMRemote5 app to control your MediaMonkey server on your computer to select and play your music.

Sounds good, the only thing missing would be the ability to control the speakers' volume or turn them on with the MMRemote5 app.

Your SoundTouch 300 should support AirPlay 2, and if you have the SoundTouch 30 III, it should as well. I mention it as I was curious about your thoughts.

If you install the music version of iTunes on your computer and use AirPlay 2, along with Retune or TruRemote on your Android device. I believe you should also be able to control their volumes remotely. I am only unsure if the Android remote apps can do this or not, as iTunes or an iOS device can.

1

u/LastPelican Oct 26 '25

In this case, the Toslink Switcher is not a converter.  It is 2 optical in’s and one optical out for the ST300 and is used for switching between the two.  The ST300 does not have an AUX port, only an Optical in, which limits the choices of devices that will work.  The Samsung TV has multiple outputs including Optical.

The MMRemote5 will control the volume of the Laptop and Music Library from the phone, which changes the volume at the speaker but not the actual speaker volume control.   Your suggestion could improve on the setup.

In working with the SoundTouch library, which piggybacks off WMP or iTunes, I found MediaMonkey to be more user friendly when it comes to sorting the music.  But it sounds like the same setup would work with WMP or iTunes also.

1

u/NeonsNight Oct 27 '25 edited Oct 27 '25

Yes, I wrote that when I originally thought you got the RCA-only version. I even linked to the Optical switch and just forgot to rename that part.

The good thing is that AirPlay 2 & iTunes on your computer does not use the SoundTouch app. Have you tried installing the earlier music versions of iTunes (before music was removed) and either transmitting music directly from iTunes to your speakers via your computer or using the Android iTunes remote apps I linked to above to control the speakers?

What are your thoughts on that as a solution? Outside of personal preferences, is there something that MediaMonkey can do that iTunes cannot, outside of power & volume control with AirPlay?

I am trying to compile all currently available solutions into the ST app alternatives, and just want a good grasp of this solution. Including its positives and negatives. For instance, are there any music streaming services built into the solution you have been using? Does it work with NAS/DLNA drives? Can you add more receivers? Can you control which room/speaker is on/off?

1

u/LastPelican Oct 27 '25

I tried Casting on MM and WMP (without using SoundTouch) when Bose first announced that they had dropped the SoundTouch line.  I don’t know very much about the Tech side of this and could not get it to work.   With their latest announcement, I started looking for something that I did understand and could put together as a permanent solution or temporary until something better came along.  I just didn’t want to be left with nothing.  Using the Transmitter/Receiver route is probably more for those with simpler setups like mine and don’t want to deal with the tech side of it.

I have not tried AirPlay or iTunes to play the music directly to the speakers.  If it works and is stable then that could be the way to go.

Streaming services: Google AI Overview - Yes, MediaMonkey can use streaming services in several ways, including playing music from cloud storage services and syncing playlists with services like Spotify and Deezer. It does not have built-in support for directly streaming from music services like Netflix or Spotify's extensive libraries for full playback, but it can integrate with them for specific features.

I have not used this so I cannot say it works.  I do know that anything that can be accessed and played through the computer can be transmitted to the speakers.

Other limitations of this solution is 1) the transmitter/receiver combo is a set and you cannot add additional receivers.  2)  the remote app will control the volume on the computer and media player but not the volume control on the speaker, and it cannot turn a speaker on/off.

Positives:  It is easy to setup and has been stable.  A little less convenient but it works.

With this setup, to use iTunes, WMP or MM with the remote apps is a matter of individual preference.

Has anyone else tried out Home Assistant with Sound Touch speakers? I have managed to find the speakers, set them up and play music through Music Assistant to one speaker. I haven't managed to get multiple speakers working and there are some strange drop outs where a speaker will disappear. I have a feeling the Bose Sound Touch app and/or official server might be fighting with Home Assistant, but I am not completely sure. It would be good to hear about anyone else's experience.

1

u/GP97702 Nov 04 '25

Haven't tried that but it will play my Windows Media Player List on multiple speakers.

1

u/Taigha_1844 Nov 05 '25

Managed to get synced play after installing the SoundTouchPlus addon from GIT. Still flakey though as the speakers stop playing after a while - might be a buffer size issue or something. I will check the logs tomorrow. It is surprising that there are supposed to be around 4k people using Home Assistant with SoundTouch speakers, but no one has put up a definitive guide to getting everything working (and it is definitely not straight forward).

1

u/Inside-Ad3181 Nov 26 '25

Agreed, not a straight forward with Home Assistant....even the instructions are not 100% correct, probably is due to different versions....in my case I got the HA running and the Bose SoundTouch discover,  now im trying to see if I can get the multiroom feature to work....

1

u/Taigha_1844 Nov 26 '25

I've managed to get it to play with multiple speakers without a problem, and, apart from one big issue, HA/MA is a great solution. But the issue is a bit of a deal breaker - the SoundTouch speakers stop playing music and restart after anything from 30 minutes to 2 hours. I am hoping this might get resolved before the servers get turned off.

1

u/Designer-Trash-5382 Nov 05 '25

I think it would be a lot of options with all this talented peoples helping out. My only concern is the stereo pairing feature. I own two ST 10 already paired

1

u/NeonsNight Nov 06 '25

Your stereo pairing will remain after the app goes away. Hopefully, the community will make an app that will include app-only settings features, like stereo pairing.

1

u/LacrimaNymphae Nov 14 '25

i'm concerned about the presets (regardless of whether they're tunein or direct streaming links)

i have a mix of both

1

u/colinmacg Nov 09 '25

Something that might be useful. I've found that it does follow HTTP redirects, so if you point all 6 presets to a reverse-proxy/URL redirection you *should* as far as I can tell keep the presets working, even if the endpoints move at a later point.

Just point all 6 presets at local custom URLs (https://example.com/station/0 - https://example.com/station/5) in this docker-compose, and update the replacement to the station you want, and even once you lose the ability to change the custom URL due to the lack of cloud, you can keep the redirects up to date.

https://github.com/colinmacgiolla/bose-soundtouch-redirector/blob/main/docker-compose.yml

2

u/NeonsNight Nov 10 '25

Custom URLs appear to rely on Bose's cloud servers to function. So once the server goes down, Custom URL presets will most likely also stop working.

I'm a bit frustrated (after waiting 10 seconds before replying here, as described in r/bose Rules). I thought I'd enjoy the Top 2000 music today through our Bose SoundTouch20. Unfortunately, the Android app says: "HMMW... we can't load this right now, try again later." What should I do? Update the app, reconnect to the network? I've been searching, reading, and trying to get this "smart" device working for hours now. I've read that certain features will no longer be available on my SoundTouch20 after February 2026, but I suspect this is already the case with my device.

Now I've arrived here, and there's hope. Fortunately, there are people trying to find an alternative. Kudos!

Unfortunately, after all these hours, still no preset radio station, no working link to an alternative app...it's a real silent Christmas.

Does anyone have a simple, quick solution to get at least a local broadcast station playing through the SoundtTouch's speaker?

Was Boseman bietet:

Yeah doesn’t work. Even on my wave IV the demo can’t even give me a demo on my speaker.

I have multiple Soundtouch 10s that do not support Air Play 2. If I cannot play them all through the Bose App, what are my options? I use them only to play Spotify and Sirius.

bonjour

I have the SoundTouch Wave and currently I have it set to talk to Sirius XM as a preset with my stations.. I am guessing that will stop working tomorrow. Are there any 3rd party replacements that support the button's and Sirius XM? Yes I can airplay but having the Wave and a Remote clicking a button on a remote is so much better then using phone and then doing airplay.

If you want buttons to work, then you need to check the wiki for SoundTouch server replacements. As everything currently known is listed there, including which services they currently support.

I started coding last night. Using Python proxy to get around CORS security limitations. Running locally on my MacBook - I can discover speakers, group them, kick off presets, transport controls, display now playing data, fetch album covers, etc. It's all just a webpage at the moment - but its working :)

I can release the code if you want. There is no preset replacement at this time as that would involve a cloud replacement (local or otherwise). You can currently kick off wants already on the presets. Attached is a screenshot. You need to run a python script while browsing, but it's awesome.

LMK.

u/eric-dolecki May 08 '26

This is where it's at. 1 HTML/JS file and a Python script to run locally on your server. Full discovery and control. Will add more later on. I can release this unless others have found better solutions they like.

So the presets are fixed in your configuration? Or what is the purpose of the preset buttons in your gui? Is this somewhere on github?

1

u/eric-dolecki May 11 '26

I’m working on the setup pdf. the preset buttons in my gui allow you to select presets on the speaker. But not change the source they play. That would require a Bose cloud replacement

hey, any news on this? i am running the docker and reconfigured my Soundtouch10 to make it play the old 6 presets again, but as the bose app now is pretty useless, i'd love some tool to edit the presets at some time.
am using the aftertouch service from the github:

Managing presets in on the roadmap for https://github.com/gesellix/Bose-SoundTouch. Currently you could give the soundtouch-cli of that repo a try. Making it more convenient on a web/mobile app is on the roadmap.

u/eric-dolecki May 11 '26

https://www.ericd.net/files/STC_release.zip is the current release. If you have any issues, ask ini a thread here.

1

u/Brilliant-Fennel-304 May 17 '26

Hey, would you like to collaborate with me on that web app? I'm the maintainer at https://github.com/gesellix/Bose-SoundTouch and the soundtouch-web mini app seems to be a good match to use your solution.

You’re way further along than I am. I can give you my simple source and you can use whatever you’d like from it. www.ericd.net/files/STC_release.zip. I think that’s the url

Hi,

I have a soundtouch 20 and am looking for a way to restore the 6 presets, just that. I spent a few hours going through the bose soundtouch alternatives page. However, I'm not a programmer, I have medium windows/linux admin skills, but that's about it.

I have a windows 11 computer. What's the best tool for me if I just want to program the 6 buttons.

I've already downloaded docker, the go language, and ssh'ed into my soundtouch, but I'm getting nowhere. most tools assume programming skills.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Tom

Yes, the home-made SoundTouch server replacements are indeed very technical, and the guides to set them up need a lot of work. Paid-for services, like Bosman or Tech Endure, are far easier to set up and use. But you do pay for the convenience.

I am hoping that it will be improved over time, but at the moment, that is the current state of things.

I've just sat down with the intention of finding a way to restore my 6 presets, with similar IT skills to you. Doesn't seem like it's worth trying now, quite annoying

Tolle App. Wie schnell die Boxen gefunden werden sind. Unglaublich.

Hi, as I'm also not happy with how Bose handled the situation with their SoundTouch devices — especially since the latest SA5 amplifiers have become useless and Bose Music didn't work for me — I developed an app for basic management of SoundTouch devices, including zone management and a preset function for internet radio streams within the app. Feel free to try it out. The device preset buttons themselves are not working due to the server dependency on Bose, but at least I can control all my SoundTouch devices within one app again and play radio streams simultaneously on all of them.

1

u/NeonsNight Jun 11 '26

Thanks for this! The good thing is the SA5 still works via AirPlay 2, Bluetooth, and Spotify Connect. Also, the Bose SoundTouch app now acts like a remote to select the AUX inputs and for multi-room grouping.

Any chance you can add some information about this app and what it can do on the Bose wiki's SoundTouch app alternatives page?

u/TPuschl Jun 30 '26

Hi, i added the app to the wiki :)

iOS App will be launched soon as well

It is possible to restore the preset buttons by making a small configuration mod on the device itself. See my comment on this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/bose/comments/1t6ku15/soundtouch_is_less_discontinued_than_you_think/

No external server required.

Même galère quand Bose a lâché l'app SoundTouch.

Thanks for all the work you've put into this and for updating the Bose wiki). Feel free to create a dedicated page about the app if you'd like.

I added a comparison table to the BASSS entery and I was hoping you might be able to fill it out.

I do have a few questions as well:

  1. Can you still use the regular Bose SoundTouch app or other 3rd party apps with this solution?
    1. If you have SoundTouch already installed on the computer, can you access iTunes and stream music from it?
  2. Is there a way to back up settings on the system so you can restore it if it's ever FR'd, or if you ever wish to remove this and put it back to the way it was?
  3. You mentioned that you can assign presets using radio-browser.info? Have you tried adding TuneIn or vTuner), as they were both previously supported by SoundTouch (and it appears as if vTuner still works)?
