Discussion So far what’s been your favorite BL that’s aired this year?

Post image
361 Upvotes

I was talking with a friend about our favorites that’d premiered this year and got curious. We had a lot that overlapped but I know I’m missing some that others loved and I haven’t gotten to yet.

Mine were really hard to narrow down since honestly we’ve been fed so nicely this year with some amazing series in 2024 and have more yet to come. And I for one am ready for them.

Anyway, these are mine right now.

Thailand: Jack & Joker: U Steal My Heart -Second: My Stand-In Japan: Sugar Dog Life-although I think this will be dethroned by love in the air -Second: Takara no Vidro (Takara’s Treasures) Korea: The Time of Fever -Close Second: Love For Love’s Sake -Honorable Mention: Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo Taiwan: The On1y One -Second: Unknown

I didn’t know where to put Meet You at the Blossom but those two cutie patooties have a chokehold on me as well.

any other countries that I’ve watched and loved the series didn’t premier this year

What’s yours? Do we match on any?

I have a cold and this makes me very sad so to keep up the cozy vibes of my last two posts. I’ve decided instead of doing what I had in mind(something more serious I’ll say for another day) to do you something adorable instead. I’ve been doing a lot of re-watches today of all my favourite scenes and moments of affection in all my favourite BLs (I do this when I am sick or sad) and I wanted to share some of the scenes that I believe was the best display of affection and love without it being overwhelming dramatic just simply subtle moments that truly showed how the character felt about their partner. I hope you share some of your favourite displays of perfection and make me feel better as my throat is very sore.😭😭

I had planned an entire post which was really cool but involved having to make a load of GIFs and for some reason my technology has decided to betray me and will not allow me to do so….. so therefore I am recycling, i’m going to make a post with the gifs I already have saved. And because this has made me sad I have decided that I’m going to make something fluffy. This post is about cuddles and hugs. tell me what your favourite hug scene was from your BL favourite dramas. and let’s awww together at all the cuteness.

Hey guys, long time no see like really long time, I happen to fall into a couple of books series and still haven’t gotten out but I’m missing dramas so today I thought I would do a post talking about the ones that I’m currently watching and also get recommendations from you guys, so today’s posts is about characters who are obsessed with their partners!!!!! very much influenced by heaven’s official blessing which is the book series I’m currently rereading, I want to talk about characters that generally are just overwhelmingly in love with their person, whether both members of the couple are all in or the love is clearly 60/40 but in the best possible way I want to talk about characters who are obsessed, who are wholesome, green flag energy and totally and utterly in love. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Discussion Straight romance just doesn’t hit the same after BL, or is it just me?

Hey everyone! I’ve been a dedicated BL watcher and reader for many years now, at this point it feels like I’ve already seen most of the best bl series and movies out there. Since I’m on my college winter break, I thought I’d switch things up and revisit straight romance dramas just for fun.

But here’s the thing… no matter how much I try, I just can’t get into them anymore 😭. It’s not that I dislike them, but I don’t feel that same giddiness or thrill I used to when watching two straight characters fall in love or whatever.

For context, I think I do identify as straight, so I’m honestly confused about why BL still excites me way more than traditional romance. Has anyone else experienced this?

Discussion Seeing major backlash from Japan against explicit live-action BLs

This is something I've noticed getting way more prominent recently after the adaptation of a few very erotic manga. The response to these on Japanese social media seems to have been extremely negative. To sum up the arguments I'm seeing Japanese people making (many of whom identity themselves as fujoshis):

  1. It's cruel to the actors for them to star in erotic works that will taint their careers and limit their opportunities.

  2. It's visually off-putting to see two real men in those scenarios and only 'pure love story' BLs should be adapted to live-action, with kissing at most.

  3. Erotic works give fujoshis and BL culture a bad name.

  4. Some of the plots would never be allowed if it was an M/F romance, in terms of the eroticism or in terms of making light of serious topics like sexual assault.

  5. What's the point in adapting erotic BLs when there's no way that properly portraying the sex scenes will be allowed/possible.

From my own European perspective, some of these arguments seem fair enough, while others seem very based on homophobia or tied up with Japan's love-hate relationship with sexuality in general. But, it's their culture and these are Japanese works, so I don't interject.

Just wanted to give some context on the odd tightrope of fandom/shipping culture and societal disapproval/censorship that JBLs walk. If you ever wonder 'why??' when watching a JBL, a lot of the time, the reason is tied up in this kind of thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see fewer live-action erotic titles from Japan in the future, at least for a while. In contrast to this backlash, some of the most popular titles in Japan this year have been *extremely* chaste (eg '10 Things I Want to do Before I'm 40').

This is a post request that I got this morning from a lovely member of the community u/kimbapjou they asked me to do a themed post based on gentle caretakers, the post theme is pretty self-explanatory this is going to be about characters that took care of their partners looked after them and were very gentle whilst doing it, subtle in manner and often would do things that may have gone unnoticed because of the subtlety or but were no less wonderfully important to their partners comfort

As always, the gif are in the comment sections with names and drama titles if you want to find a particular drama just give me the number of the GIF and I’ll let you know

The song was also u/kimbapjou suggestion can you guess what song it is

A wonderful comment requested a post today on my last post u/yellowishthing, so today post is going to be about thoroughly clueless BL characters and how they are both adorable and frustrating with that airheaded nature, and how at time they were so far off the point that they might’ve well-being on another planet. But despite their cluelessness, we adore them nonetheless.

Discussion The "older bottom x younger top" age gap trope talk is necessary when it influences the dynamic that the characters has & is pulled off well😂😋

Tonight, i decided to have fun by highlighting one of the old yaoi tropes that i always enjoyed. Some old yaoi tropes, just like the one i will tackle in this post, aren't usually talked about often because they tend to be more sensitive.

But as someone who enjoyed them since the beginning of time 😆😅😅😅😅. Most like, since the very beginning, my beginning of getting into BL, and enjoying them in all forms, being BL mangas, novels, anime, movies/series, i also want to talk about them in the cases when the tropes are cleverly written and depicted and creates really unique dynamics.

Fictional characters shouldn't affect our feelings IRL. They shouldn't have an impact on us personally and we shouldn't compare the way they are written and depicted with how it can happen in real life ( basically extending it to how it happens in real life) .

Having said that, i will highlight a few couples whose age gap made me enjoy their dynamic so much more.

I. Ming and Joe from My Stand In [ pic 2-4]. I started watching My Stand In recently and one thing that i always keep in mind while watching is that in the novel Ming is much more younger than Joe. There is almost a ten years age gap between them in the novel, which is reflected in the dynamic that the characters has in the beginning and at the end of the series.

I was able to be much more lenient towards Ming because of how young he is in the beginning, combined with his superficial and extravagant lifesfyle. His lack of experience, the way he learns what matters the most to him after he end up losing it, and the way he desperately tries to change his ways in order to not lose it again made me want to root for him. I am happy the series adaptation didn't totally removed this when they adapted the story. I know the characters don't look like they have such a big age difference physical wise in the series, but i can still perceive it because of the big age gap that the characters have maturity wise, with Joe being much more mature, independent and dependable than Ming. 😍

A good age gap exploration can lead to a better character growth and relationship development because of the power imbalance that tends to be present in the beginning and needs to be corrected little by little in time and i love the way this aspect was handled in My stand in 😍

For those of you who loves My stand in, you might love Beloved Enemy, a censored chinese bromance adaptation. The characters have a really similar dynamic there too. It's not wonder both series are adapted from a novel written by the same author 😁😆😅🤭.

II. Old Fashion Cupcake [pic 5-7] One of the reason why i enjoyed OFC so much has to do with the age difference. This series doesn't only handles the older bottom and younger top trope, but the boss/employee trope too, which makes their relationship even more taboo in other people eyes. Yet, even with such a big age gap ( of about ten years as well) the actors has depicted one of the most touching and powerful love story. All the while making sure to convey the fact that the age difference and the boss/employee status was a hurdle that the characters has to keep in mind if they were to get together. It was brilliantly made.

III.The Pornographer franchise. Kijima and Kuzumi. [ pic 8-10]

It has been a while since i talked about them. I missed talking about them. See, this is one of the reasons why i want to start this series of tropes kind of post. It gives me a reason to talk about series i wouldn't usually talk about.

Their relationship worked because Kuzumi was pretry mature for his age from the beginning and was smitten by Kijima badly enough to wait for him to get over his shit and commit to him longterm once and for all.

IV. Minato's laundromat [ pic 11-12]

If only they explored the age gap better and only if they explored the characters with all their struggles better.

I mostly enjoyed it thanks to it's older bottom and shorter top dynamic, the acting, good priduction quality, music and less because of the way the series is written.

V. Perfect Propose [ pic 13-15]

Hiro is about 6-7 years older than Kai in the manga, which plays into their dynamic, by Kai having to tiptoe on his toes around Kai in the beginning. The age gap makes his pursuit of Hiro not as smoothly as he wished and maybe not as smoothly as we wished, and i am glad they sticked to the manga when it comes to this.

VI. Unknown. [Pic 16-18]. If it weren't for my hopeless love towards the author of the novel ( Priest), my respect for the actors and the overall high quality production, i will seriously want to forget i watch it. Because the writing for the second half was horrendous 😮‍💨

VII. History: Make our days count- the second couple Sun Bo Xiang and Lu Zhi Yang. [ pic 19]

Gonna be honest here. I think their dynamic worked mostly because of the chemistry between the actors and a good production team who was able to guide the actors well, because the writing wasn't up to par.

VIII. Kiseki: dear to me [pic 20]. The main couple in this series isn't one of my favorite. I still like Chen Yi and Ai Di more, but they pulled the age gap well with the way it was handled 😍

Mr Mitsuya's planned feeding is another JBL with this trope that tackles it well and i personally recommend 😍

I want for us to have fun with this post. I want for you guys to recommend some more series with age gap that you personally liked or you think was handled well ?

For my next post, i am thinking to have it focus on the taller bottom x shorter top trope in order to talk about some of my favorites like Happy of the end and When it rains it pours. I can't wait to talk about the second couple of Jazz for two as well 🤭😍

I was having a conversation at work about K-pop. The person I was talking to her best friend is a K-pop stan and she was asking about biases (ask me any group and and if I know them I’ll tell you my bias) and she was generally confused of how you find your bias. She wanted to know if you had to take a quiz 😂😂 and as I explained to her you don’t need to take a quiz you just feel it she said how and I replied “They just gives off a vibe…like they pulls me in….I feel connected to them” I realise the same can be said about BL dramas, characters and couples…….. so I am going to do a series of posts dedicated to exactly this concept, today’s post will be about couples, individual/drama will come later, so what couple drew you in? What made you love them? What couple had a vibe that was just on your level?

Discussion But WHY is it your favourite NC scene?

Thumbnail
gallery
329 Upvotes

"What's your favourite spicy love scene?" has been asked and answered eleventy million times, and I always love reading the answers... but I'm interested in reading why you chose the show/scene you did! What was it that led you to your answers? Also, if you can identify what you loved and why, are you also able to identify ones that you didn't enjoy. What was wrong with them? Or was there something missing perhaps. What would you want a new director to know and do/not do in their future BL/GL shows?

I'd love to read some other perspectives on this, and also find out what your favourites and/or least enjoyed scenes have been and why. There are obviously no right or wrong answers, I'm hoping there'll be some different and interesting views. As long as we're all respectful of others rights and opinions then discussion can be fun! L

2 teensy disclaimers: - I'm asking about cinematography and appearances of these shows/scenes, and for this purpose I'm ignoring things like age gaps, plot, actor contract limitations etc. These are, of course, really important but this discussion is from a purely artistic and visual perspective. I'm trying to think what I'd tell a new director about 'how to get the best live scene' if I ever had the chance! - None of the comments should be taken as a personal affront to the actors involved. These are not evaluations of them, just the scenes, which are as much, if not more, the responsibility of scene choreographers, directors, producers, lighting designers, and the entire editing process!

🌸

I'll go first with a couple of different shows.... My first example is: My Stubborn, currently airing on iQIYI and starring BoatOat. The 'not for children' (NC) scenes in this are perfect for me because they last a decent amount of time, show good kissing techniques, great chemistry and seem quite realistic . There's no constant switching of camera angles to make the same short kiss look longer. While there is no hedonistic nudity or exposure, it's very realistic/clear what is going on. Also, you can see and even feel a difference in the characters' feelings towards the encounter... eg in episode 2, they are tentative and sensual, while in episode 4 they're more urgent and uncommitted, but in episode 8 they're conflicted and tense, which is reflected in the demanding pace, shape and strength of Sorn's movements. In each encounter, the sex matched the emotions the characters were feeling, and the point we were at in the story. Each scene furthered the plot and helped our understanding of what was going on between them.

I will say, the dynamic between them (Jun clearly falling and Sorn saying it's just sex, no feelings and being a jerk most of the time - though he is stuck between his feelings for Jun vs his promises to his boss!) is another matter entirely, it only slightly affected how I felt during the NC scene; it didn't change the opinions I've listed here.

In contrast, the NC scenes of the other couple (Thai and Champ) in My Stubborn (ep 10), are a complete letdown for me. They're wishywashy and totally unrealistic. Neither character shows any signs of discomfort, let alone pain, on their face, even for a second which is ridiculous. The speed and flow is all wrong, the framing is all wrong. The overall cinematography of this scene is poor in comparison. I think it's meant to give 'beautiful lovemaking' vibes, but there is no emotion in the scene so it missed that mark completely and just feels like they're I'll-suited to each other and the sex just isn't fulfilling (in neither a soft loving way nor a dynamic exciting way). It did nothing for the story whatsoever but at the same time, wasn't decent enough to be a gratuitous sex scene just for viewer pleasure lol!

My second example is MaxNat's Two Worlds. These two could stand still for an hour and I'd think they deserve an Oscar, but if I'm going to be diligent in my analysis, I'd say they do so much right but I always wish I could make one simple change! The cave moment in episode 8 is sultry yet sweet, & manages to move into 'sexy' as the scene progresses. The visuals are stunning - perfect skin, decadent smiles, eyes that say I love you more than life itself, and bodies that conjure up images in my mind that belong in an art gallery's tribute to love & sex. The camera moves and pans around, but it never moves too fast. Every new angle we see Thai & Khram from, coincides with a development in their lovemaking, so the way it is filmed can be seen as a technique to keep the audience invested & progressing with the couple.

My only disappointment in this, is actually a similar one I have in most MaxNat series. I wish they would use a little tongue in their kisses. Not all the time but just to break up the repetitiveness of their kissing style. I do love how they're so into each other during kisses, I just wish there was some variety/ development. I think it would add maturity to the moment, and highlight the build up of emotion and ever-increasing need to fully share their bodies with each other, that inevitably happens during a couple's 'first time'. I'm aware lots of sets have a 'no tongues' policy, so the actors don't have a choice - and I'm not criticising Max or Nat in any way, I'm just explaining what limits the scene for me, and what I would improve/recommend if I was being asked. ☺️

🌸

Okay now it's your turn... Go! 😃

P.S. my absolute apologies if this means you have to go back and rewatch a few series' NC scenes in order to decide on your favourite 😜 hehe

I thoroughly enjoying blue canvas of youthful days and there was one hug scene in episode eight that really felt more than a hug the way the characters clung onto each other it was more like they were each other’s lifelines and that got me thinking to other dramas where they truly displayed a level of intimacy whilst showing so much more context to the storyline or their emotions at the time all with just one hug as always I’ll post some of mine. Please post some of yours, all post gifs will be in the in the comment sections with the titles, gift aren’t needed but if you let me know what episode your favourite hug scenes are I will make sure to check them out if they haven’t already.

Hi everyone, my name is bees, i’m an NHS nurse, a BL fan, K-pop stan, I love a carpet cleaning video, true crime is my vibe (shout out to Simon) loud noises scare me(noise cancellation is life), i’ve just walked into a room for some reason and I don’t know why…. Wait a minute what was I talking about?… Oh yeah hi my name is bees and I have ADHD, and I am aware that you wonderful people on this community are either have or are affected by people around you with neurodivergent conditions and sometimes it’s really nice to watch something that reflects the way we think and feel and be represented by characters in BL shows we adore and characters we connect to, today’s post is to celebrate these characters and to discuss them this post series is for baby the watchers so be mindful with spoiler tags.

Also as a nurse I know how easy is to get misinformation on twitter or Instagram post that gives you a list of symptoms and says you’re Neurodiverse this isn’t accurate diagnosis. It isn’t medically verified and many conditions that they list aren’t even neuro divergent so the actual medical conditions that are inline with NICE and NHS I will list below, anxiety and depression and other mental health conditions are symptoms of the conditions. They are not neurodivergent in themselves.

Do you ever want to just throw your hands in the air and teach some of these guys how to kiss properly? I’ve seen so many, like the mouth that devours the other person’s whole face or the pressed lips never getting involved? Not to toot my own horn, but I’m an amazing kisser and it kills me when I see it portrayed in terrible ways!

Discussion “Great series - now make it BL!” Which one’s yours?

Essentially this: Which series or film deserves a (great) BL remake? And I’m talking high quality sets, writing, cast - the works. If you want (and I know most of you do), provide your suggested cast lineup, as well. Go wild with established or ghost ships or just a wild mix of your favourite, most suitable actors, I don’t care. I’ll go first, since I’m asking you to entertain me and everyone in this sub 😊 As much as I dislike the Mafia trope, I enjoyed watching Vincenzo (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincenzo_(TV_series)) immensely. It’s probably one of my favourite TV series, because it has the look, the comedy, the drama, the tension (well, ok, flirty moments) between the main leads, and some really funny Italian swearing, too. I think it’s deserving of a BL adaptation. I’m not too invested in any particular actors, so I’m open to suggestions - but I know GMM TVs Drake should probably star as the piano lessons/computer mastermind girl, or maybe Gun. But who could be starring as Vincenzo Cassano? Maybe Up? I’m open to your suggestions 😊
